President’s MessageNormally, I would be reporting what a fun 2020 Spring Con-vention we had, but this spring was different because of the COVID-19 crisis, we chose to cancel this convention for the safety of our members. We all were disappointed, since I know we were looking forward to meeting in Galveston. Will you please, join me in thanking the 2020 Spring Convention Co-chairman Nancy Giffhorn and Millie Smaardyk and their committee that included: Madeleine Rogers, Registrar; Ann Koerenck, Ads; Nancy Heard, Hospitality Bags; Judy Anderson and Michelle Thompson, Speakers; Leslie Wong, Door Prizes; Karolyn Gephart, Workshops; Vada de Jongh, Silent Auction; Joyce Mayers, Mayor – Flag Presentation; Lisa Lofaro, Graph-ics; and JoAnn Arrant, Vendors.

The convention cancellation brought with it many changes and challenges. But I know we can accomplish anything if we all work together. We began by working on the trustee and finance committee business with an electronic vote on items we needed to adopt before the fall convention. The next step was a meeting of the Executive Committee. I appreciate and thank everyone for helping me get ready for the fall convention October 18-21, 2020 in Kerrville.

Our attorney, David Goodman, recently sent me his copy of the “Ground Lease and Quitclaim Deed” between the City of Ft. Worth and Texas Garden Clubs. Inc. I have read it several times and spoken with Mr. Goodman about my concerns and questions. But I think we still have more to discuss. Basically, it offers us ownership of the HQ’s Building (improvements) and we give them the property, all 10.29 acres. They will then lease to us an area of land around the building, including the wildscape and the pocket gardens. A few of the terms of this lease include that we will get at least one dedicated landscaping employee to maintain the leased premises. The leased premises will be accessible to the public free of charge and they guar-antee we will have ingress and egress to our building.

I have asked the Trustees and the Advisory Committee to review the Ground Lease and give me their opinions and advise. My hope is to negotiate terms with the City that will satisfy our membership. Best Wishes for a Fun Summer!

National Garden Clubs, Inc.Good news! The new NGC website is nearing completion, with an anticipated “going live” date in late June. The Website Development committee has worked tirelessly to help pro-vide a user-friendly website, with many new avenues of shar-ing and learning. Be sure to use our website as a useful tool when preparing projects for your garden club.

NGC is proud to sponsor our first ever Virtual Flower Show. Originally, the Perfect Vision 2020 Petite Horticulture Special-ty Flower Show was created for our members to exhibit at the Wisconsin Convention, which was cancelled due to increased health risks. Rather than just walk away from a perfectly planned event, we decided to attempt a virtual National Flower Show with some modifications of the original flower show schedule. The flower show schedule can be found on our NGC website – www.gardenclub.org. Encourage your

members to participate as it’s a learning experience in many different ways! Sharing of our knowledge and working together will assure a strong future for NGC. I looking forward to traveling to visit with our members soon, and wish all of you a safe, healthy future.

    Gay AustinNGC President (2019-2021)

South Central RegionHello to Texas Garden Club Members! I hope this message finds you well. I know this has been a difficult time for all of us. Spring is here! Greening is taking place all over the region. Flowers are in bloom. Garden clubs are having online flower shows. Meetings and conventions are taking place electronically. It will be wonder-ful to meet face to face again when it is safe to do so. Some clubs are working with youths to plant herb gardens, and many of these gardens are in their yards. My advice is to plant what we can. Enjoy what we have! Design and share pictures! Count backyard birds! Most of all, stay safe and stay in touch! Let’s hope we can see each other soon. Keep planting! We are together even if apart for now. I am very proud of Texas members for all the work you and your clubs do to make our South Central Region beautiful.

Member Award of Honor - 2019Linda Jean Brown is a caring, committed member of her church, her community, and of course, her Garden Club activi-ties. She is District III Life  Member  #246,  Texas  Garden  Clubs,  Inc.  Life  Member  #1264,  South Central Region Life Member and National Garden Clubs, Inc. Life Member #10,238. Linda Jean is a member of both Dogwood Garden Club- ‐Palestine and Grapeland Garden Club.

She  is  especially  loving  and  generous  in  support  of  the  needs  of  children, seriously ill and elderly people. She and her husband David are long- ‐standing supporters of Pleasant Hill Children’s Home. She has worked tirelessly as a Court Ap-pointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA)  volunteer  ad-vocate.    Having  established  a  relationship  with  a  child involved in a Child Protective Service (CPS) family removal case, due  to  parental  abuse  or  neglect,  the  volunteer  ad-vocate  speaks  to  the Court representing the best interests of that child. She chaired a style show for the Cattle  Barons  Ball to raise funds for the American  Cancer Society. Currently, she is Bereavement Com-mittee Chair and Co- ‐Chair  of  the  decades- ‐long  Chili  Supper  fundraiser  at  St.  Phillips  Episcopal Church. She was a WeCare Palestine 2019 “Best Neighbor of the Year” Nominee and continues to support her local Palestine High School Alumni Association.

Even  before  Linda  Jean  Brown  was  a  member,  she  was  a  Dogwood  Garden Club work-er. In the 1990’s our Membership Roster was full, with a waiting list, so she volunteered to help with big projects, most notably the decorating of 3 large historic homes each year. Dogwood Garden Club did the Tour of Homes project for decades. Each room in the homes was decorated, many with handmade decorations. During the 2- ‐day tour, each room in the homes had to be monitored in order to  secure  the  owner’s  possessions.  This  was  a  huge  project  that  required many hours and people. She worked tirelessly in the homes for three years prior to being asked to become a member. She chaired the  Tour  of  Homes  Bazaar  and  served  as  Recording  Secretary  during  her first year as a member.

Linda Jean Brown is an idea person, and a leader. She has both a big heart and a bigger per-sonality. She thinks of things no one else would, and manages to get them done, because she is determined and very organized.  Following  are  a  couple  of  interesting  projects,  one  large,  the other small, to indicate her leadership, creativity and compassion.

    Description of Accomplishments

Horticultural  Therapy:  With  Brown  as  Club  Chair,  Dogwood  Garden  Club has pro-vided seasonal cheer at the Palestine Healthcare Center for over 20 years provid-ing Christmas trees and decorations. At  Valentine’s  Day,  we  visit,  serve  refresh-ments and take photos of them as they celebrate love and commitment in their own way. Also, at Linda’s suggestion, we planted a  garden  at  Elkhart  Oaks  Nurs-ing  home  and  placed  small  Christmas  trees in every room to brighten their season. Horticulture: Brown has ‘stolen the show’ at the East Texas State Fair Horticulture Show for years. In the past 3 years, 2017, 2018, 2019, she won all of the top Horticulture Awards. In 2019 alone, she won: Potted  Plants: Best of Section Rosette and 1st Place ribbons for her  Prickly Pear Cactus ‘Snow’ (Opuntia) and 1st Place Ribbons for both: Ivy (Pothos) and Aloe Vera (Lillaceae).

    — Congratulations —

2019 Garden Club of the Year

    Third Consecutive Year

2019 Garden Club of the YearAs the old saying goes: ”The third time is the charm.” Yes, this is Dogwood Garden Club’s third consecutive year to win the most prestigious GARDEN CLUB OF THE YEAR Award in the state of Texas.

DGC strives to make Palestine and Anderson County a brighter, friendlier, and a more beautiful place to live and visit. The members continue to grow in number and continue to come out to participate on monthly “work days” to pull weeds, prune, mulch, and add new plant material to enhance the gardens throughout the year. The members maintain the Blue Star Highway Memorial Marker, the Entrance and Exit gates of the Davey Dogwood Trails, the garden at the Anderson County Courthouse, McReynolds Plaza, the Dogwood Park @ Reagan Park, Adopt A Street Project and Arbor Day. They continue to make and distribute Scarecrows throughout Palestine in the Fall and participate in the yearly “Paint Palestine Pink” Cancer awareness for breast cancer. Dogwood Garden Club provides and decorates Christmas trees at both the Anderson County Courthouse and Annex.

An exciting new project beginning in 2019 is the establishment of a Junior Garden Club, the Blooming Minds Jr. Gardeners, comprised of the students at UTTUA Palestine Campus. Dogwood Garden Club hosts plant sales in the Spring during the Dogwood Trails Festival and in the Fall during the Hot Pepper Festival.

    TGC, Inc. 89th Annual Fall ConventionOctober 18 – 20, 2020

“Branded @ the Y.O.”Y.O. Ranch Hotel & Conference Center – Kerrville, TX

    Hosted by: “The Wranglers”________________________________

There is no better time to be in the Hill Country than in autumn as the changing of the sea-son begins. Saddle up with “The Wranglers” who come from several of your TGC Districts as we extend a Big Texas Howdy! Yep, it’s Branding time and we invite y’all to the TGC, Inc. 89th annual Fall Convention to be held Sunday – Tuesday, October 18 – 20, 2020. We are proud to announce the Y.O. Ranch Hotel & Conference Center located at 2033 Sidney Baker Street in Kerrville will be our host hotel. They are rolling out the carpet to make our convention a memorable one. Their staff is ready to take care of all our needs.

There are many “trail rides” offered. Whether it be attending the Trustees or Finance meet-ings or the District Directors meeting to the Opening Ceremony and General Assembly or simply meeting up with your partners for Dinner on your Own in historic Kerrville on Sunday evening, we are planning for a boot scooting time to be had by all.

It would not be a true convention if we did not include downtown shopping.

Historic Downtown Kerrville businesses are offering discounts to anyone wearing their con-vention badges in their stores. So, when time permits, it is recommended that y’all enjoy what Kerrville has to offer.

In addition to “taking care of a little business” that is much needed, we want to throw in a few good time tours to take advantage of during your stay.

For those who come in Sunday there will be “A Lobby Tour” inside the Y.O. This proves to be a very enlightening tour.

For some who know remember Dottie, who set up her jewelry displays at our state conven-tions for years, the Y.O. gift shop carries her jewelry and is available for sale.

On Monday afternoon, if you are free there will be several tours around Kerrville for you to experience. You will meet up in the lobby with your partners and caravan to the tour of your choice.

Then on Tuesday, the Opening Ceremony and General Assembly begins. In the afternoon, we will have a very unique workshop available for those who choose to use their imagina-tions. You will want to be a part of this one of a kind class. You are invited to Dress Western Style as we honor our President, Peggy Moreland, following dinner in our Hospitality Suite also to be held on Tuesday, immediately after dinner.

So, fill out your registration forms and get them right back to us so we can prepare for an awesome time together. Deadline is October 1st.

Day 1- Sunday - Registration 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm in the Lobby,For those waiting around, bless your heart, there is “A Lobby Tour” full of rich history. The Clay Dahlberg Bronze, “Rough Men in Touch Times”, a smaller version from the original 5’ Tall and 7’ Wide is proudly on display. In addition you can’t miss the 5 large iron CHANDELIERS with 390 branding irons hanging on them, a collection of Chas Schreiner, III. These represent the brand of ranches whose cattle were on the Chisholm Trail. This is just a hint of valuable history what can be seen as you walk the halls of the Y.O. Lobby.

You will caravan to the tour of your choice. It would not be a Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. Convention if we did not include Jewelry. Join the Texas tradition at James Avery Visitor Center & Store where you can purchase his great artisan jewelry. Another Tour could find partners at the Kerrville Hills Winery. The Winery has a tasting room with award-winning wines. Wine Tastings/by the glass could be of interest to many of our partners. An outstanding don’t want to miss tour is the Museum of Western Art, where the legend lives. The nice folks of this establishment will open their doors to us for a private showing. These are a few options available for our partners to saddle up and ride on over to one of these awesome tours.

    In Loving Memory of

JEAN MILLSKermit Garden Club — District I

Jean Mills — Texas Garden Clubs, District I, and Kermit Garden Club lost a larger than life member on February 9, 2020. Jean Mills served all of the garden club-related entities in many leadership roles including Vice President-Membership of TGC, District I Di-rector at least 3 two-year terms, committee chairman of each of the entities especially yearbooks and club histories. She served as president of Mildred Fly Garden Club several times as well as pres-ident of Judges Advanced Study Club several times. At the time of her death, she was serving TGC as Club History Awards Chair-man, TGC District I Nominating Committee member, Publication Awards Chairman, and Silver Yearbook Awards Chairman.

Jean began her garden club adventure in Farmington, New Mexi-co in 1962. As husband Jim’s job took them around the country, she joined garden clubs in Arvada, CO; Lafayette, LA; and Odessa, TX. She loved arranging flowers, and success-fully completed the five-part course of study to become a judge, then a master judge, life judge and finally taking emeritus status as her health failed. She joined Odessa Garden Club in 1972, the Ector Garden Club, and Mildred Fly Garden Club – all in Odessa. She was also a member of Kermit Garden Club and Judges Advanced Study Club of the Permian Basin. She truly was an amazing arranger; she loved nothing more than showing others how to arrange their flowers – giving praise and offering suggestions to improve the re-sult. At her programs, she made her arrangements “live,” always talking her way through the process showing what worked and fixing what didn’t work. Her shoes are too large to be filled. She will be missed.
