A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL OCMC MEMBERS AND FAMILIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I close out my term as president, I can honestly say that the OCMC has really improved itself over the

past year. What started out as a tumultuous beginning transformed into a fairly smooth running and fun-loving

club. When I look back, it was a transformational year, beginning with the passing of new bylaws which led to a

smooth election process and transition to our new 2020 board. We had some new and great events, such as the

recent successful Ford v. Ferrari movie preview, the largest member attended event in our history, and for good

reason! Our Edison show, Mustang Madness, and the new McCoy-Mills show were well attended, fun, and

financially successful. We have a new method of selecting our charities, and have been able to substantially

increase the amount of our charitable donations. We initiated the Veteran of the Month program; the chosen Vet

leads us in the flag salute now at the beginning of every meeting. None of this would have occurred without your

help, and without the best board I have ever worked with in any organization. I thank you all for making an old

guy happy that he got to preside over a great membership and board in a transformational year of a fabulous

club!

Our membership has grown monthly, now close to 500, and I think this is the proof that we have been

doing something right. We are getting known as the premier car club in Orange County, and have become well

known in the car community. Who else can boast of amiable alliances with the likes of Barry Mequiar, Wheeler

Dealers Mike and Ant, Chip Foos, Von Hot Rod, Craig Hoelzel, and a host of others in the car community.

Indicative of our standing in the car community is the number of folks who contact us to speak. Tonight’s speaker

is such an example. Dave Friedman contacted us to speak, I learned a lot about him, and then asked president-

elect Paul Montesano to get line him up. When you learn about Dave Friedman’s connection to Carroll Shelby as

the first photographer for Shelby American beginning in 1963, and his many other accomplishments, you will be

very happy he contacted us!

As I drift into a background role, I say thanks again to the outgoing board, and welcome the incoming

members. The OCMC will have great leadership in 2020, as both Paul and Teri Sulser have shown they have the

experience and energy to lead us forward and onward to over 500 members. I also hope we can increase

members’ participation in our events; we do have fun!

THANK YOU OCMC MEMBERS, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND NEW YEAR!!!!!!!

Just about everybody in the Orange County Mustang Club knows Jeff Weiss, and he, along with his wife Jeannie, are champion recruiters of new members. Jeff and Jeannie have been married fifty-four years! They have two children, four grandkids and four great-grandkids. Their first pony was a ’66 he bought for $2,400. They currently own three: a ’68 he bought for $3,200, a ’69 convertible and a 2015 50th Anniversary Edition. Jeff joined the U.S. Navy as 3rd Class Commissary Man in August, 1961, attending boot camp in San Diego. From there he sailed to Hawaii and on the l-o-n-g voyage, discovered he liked cook duty. Besides, cooks got extra privileges, such as they were first off the ship at port and their schedule was five days on and two days off. On that trip he also guarded a gun mount and did some painting, although the fumes made him sick. He spent thirteen months in the Philippines, outside Manila. When he returned to the States, he was stationed in Annapolis, Maryland. And then he left the Navy and married Jeannie. On Jan.1, 1966, they had their first daughter, Stephanie. As most of us know, Jeff is the consummate raconteur of funny stories. One tale he calls “Don’t Mess With the Cook!” The galley was on a raised level from the seated service members. They were relentlessly giving him a hard time so he took raw meat and made a big, fat ball and threw it at them. I wonder if that ended in a food fight? Another story he calls “Learning Curve.” He made a batch of cookies and followed the recipe to a T. Problem was, he used a ladle to measure a tablespoon of salt. You’d need a lot of milk with those cookies. An interesting fact of food supplies on a ship—they use powdered milk and powdered eggs. We honor Jeff Weiss as our Vet for December. Thanks for your service, Jeff!

Meet our New OCMC Member

Carrie Weldon is the proud owner of a 2014 Sterling Gray GT California Special with a high performance K&N filter, Boss 302 intake manifold, Flowmaster exhaust and running horse decals along the side. The car has been Dyno tuned. She previously owned a 2005 black Mustang GT that moved on to her cousin. Way to keep it in the family!

She has always enjoyed Mustangs and grew up with a dad, brothers and neighbors who worked on their cars. The neighbors had original Mustangs from the ‘64/’65 era. Her brother owned a ’69 Camaro Z28 as well. We won’t hold that against him.

Carrie works in Human Resources for Laguna Woods Village and is looking forward to connecting with OCMC members. Welcome, Carrie, and we hope to see you soon at our meetings and events.

Meet Brian Remmel, one of our newest members to the OCMC. Brian is the proud owner of a 1968 Ford Torino GT Fastback - Best of Show at Mustang Madness 2019. The car has a special place in his heart and in his family. It was purchased by his Mother for his Grandmother back in 1968. It was build June 24th, 1968 and delivered to Los Angeles, CA. His Grandmother drove it back and forth to work at Kimberly Clark where she worked for years. Eventually, Brian turned 16 and got his license on his birthday. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, Brian totaled his Dad's Cadillac within two weeks (Ugh!). The only thing worse than destroying your Dad's car, having him show up to the scene of the accident because he is a cop and was on duty! His parents were not eager to let him drive their cars again. Brian's Grandma, who was no longer driving, came forward and offered to sell him her Torino which was just sitting in her driveway. After some hard negotiation and a few hugs, they settled on the sales price of $1! Initially his parents were not thrilled. After all, what do you get a 16yr old boy who just totaled his Dad's 1978 Cadillac Coupe De Ville with a 425cuid motor? A 1968 Ford Torino GT Fastback with a 302cuid and C4 of course! After a paint job (which totally drained his paper route savings) to paint it black, and new timing chain cover, and a high pressure power steering hose, he was off a running. A few speeding tickets and a couple stern conversations with his law enforcement father, he settled down. Brian drove the Torino all through High School and then years later took several turns and restoring and modifying the car to the current pro-touring car that it is today.

Brian is an OC native having grown up in Garden Grove and attended High School at Orange High. He currently resides in Coto De Caza, CA with his wife Jennifer. If you're ever looking to work on a car and crack open a cold beer, he's got a car lift in the garage and enjoys meeting new people. He has one son (Bryce, 21) who lives in Garden Grove currently. Professionally, Brian works for Salesforce.com as VP of Enterprise Sales running a team across North America. When he's not working or enjoying his Torino, Brian likes to drive BMW Performance Vehicles (owns a 2019 M4 Club Sport), coaches Football, and enjoys quality time with family and friends. Welcome to the Orange County Mustang Club, Brian and Jennifer Remmel.

Private Showing of FORD vs. FERRARI for OCMC

Cleo Shelby’s Review –

“I enjoyed the film, I was hesitant at first but the actors were extremely good & eventually won me over! Ken Miles accent was different. Leo Bebe was not as bad as was portrayed. My husband always told me Ken Miles did not get the recognition he deserved as a driver & mechanic, stating without him there wouldn't have been a Cobra or GT40.“

Event. It was easy to find. The instructions were clear. We were impressed with how organized it was. The movie seats were plush and easy

to see the movie itself. What I didn’t like was the 30 to 45 minutes of movie previews before the movie started. We helped Cleo and her

daughter Simone get into the theatre and situated.

The movie itself. The film had an excellent progression of events, no doubt put into place by a knowledgeable writer. The actors had

portrayed their characters well. Christian Bale did his usual superb job of characterizing Ken Miles well! It is the kind of movie that even non

car enthusiasts will enjoy and can understand without taking a history lesson. The action was gripping and suspenseful thanks to the theatre

sound system and excellent cinematography! I also enjoyed the rivalry between Ford (Carroll Shelby) and Ferrari where it starts with

negotiation, continues with deception and finally victory where Ferrari nods his defeat at the end of the race! The personal stories that played

out between Shelby & Miles, Miles and his son, Henry Ford II and Shelby were well put together and demonstrated the conflicts and bonding

throughout the movie. All in all, a movie that never disappointed or was boring, even though the film was 150 minutes long!

The highlight of my evening was hearing about Carroll's life through Cleo and the stories she related to me. It was definitely icing on the cake

and Mary and I are honored to have met her!

The first 200 Mustang owners that responded to an invitation by Ford Motor Company were invited to Fox Studios, Los Angeles on November 19th. It was billed as the “Celebration of the Silver

Screen legend, Ford Mustang.” They enticed us with a screening of “something extra special” followed by a private screening of the new movie, “Ford vs. Ferrari.” If you were one of the first 55 Mustangs to arrive, you would have special car show parking place. Many arrived 3 hours early. Each Mustang was amazing with some coming from as far away as San Diego. I noticed, next to the check-in table, a gigantic sign “MACH E” – what ta heck does that mean? Thought it must be a left-over movie prop, maybe? Hey, No Judgment! Next, they led us between buildings into an open area plaza and offered us wine while we waited in a line for food. They handed each of us a huge, very high intensity flashlight. They said to hold on to It for a special surprise. On it were the words, “MACH E.” Hmmmmm. On one side of the plaza were tables and chairs. As you ate, hostesses came around with trays of hors d’oeuvres and more glasses of wine. On the opposite side of the grassy area were 4 amazing Mustangs including a GT500. In the middle of these cars was a very bright blue, 4 door, electric SUV. The sign said it was the 2021 MACH-E. Over the speaker they thanked us for coming and asked us each to stand next to a big dot on the ground and point our flashlights to the sky. As we stood there a huge drone flew over us scanning from left to right.

After the photos we were led to a very nice theatre. Our “Something Extra Special” movie was “Making of the MACH E.” The first part of the movie showed various old, original Mustang ads and interviews of people like Bill Ford, Executive Chairman, professing their love of the Mustang since the 1964 ½. It was declared as “America’s Most Popular Sports Car”, “The Most Cherished Icon”, “Stylish!” “Distinctive Sound with Exceptional Power and Performance!” Yeah, yeah, we knew that. The second part of the movie gave all the reasons why and who thought the MACH E shouldn’t be called a Mustang. Really, they’re going to tell us that??? What are they up to? Then they turned that tables by countering each objection. They said it is a “high-tech vehicle with iconic design.” They claim is has the same high standard of performance as the current Mustang. They said the standard MACH E is affordable starting at $37,495 (after the $7500 federal tax credit.) They went on to say the MACH E makes 459 horsepower and will hit 60mph in the 4 second range. Oh, but wait, that’s the MACH E GT and that one starts at $61,600 and you might make it to San Diego and back on one charge. They concluded with the same interviewed people now convinced that the MACH E deserves to be called a Mustang. Am I a little cynical, maybe? Car and Driver had an article this week called, “Sorry, Boomer, Your Ford Mustang Is Now an Electric Shopping Cart.” The author said, “Ford didn't have to call its new electrified Mach-E SUV a Mustang, but it did, and the world is a little sadder place because of it.” Personally, the car looks like all the other 5 seat SUVs on the road. Kudos to Ford Motor Company for producing an electric car to meet our future needs but it is not a Mustang. Call it Andalusian or Arabian. How about Shetland! Written by Teri Sulser
