Flea and tick infestations in dogs and cats can lead to unpleasant consequences for your animal, such as itching, restlessness, skin alterations, tapeworm in-fections and allergies. At worst even life-threatening infectious diseases could be transmitted.

In order not to get that far, it is important to imple-ment proper prevention, regular coat checks, as well as to ensure a thorough removal of existing parasites. With careful and appropriate care, your animal is also less susceptible to external influences.

How to detect fleasYour pet is scratching and has little black specks in the fur? Do the flea dirt test: Thor-oughly comb the coat with a flea comb. Apply the resulting black specks to a wet cotton ball and rub lightly. Reddish discoloration = confirmation of a flea infestation (flea dirt is excrement from digested blood). Even if you don’t find any adult fleas, this test proves that your pet is infested.

How to combat fleasStep 1: Remove adult fleas from the animal:Use a remedy with insect killing properties (in case of severe infestation: veterinary pharmaceutical).Treat all dogs and cats of the same household, also against tapeworms.Step 2: Environmental treatment: Pet blankets, floors, upholstered furni-ture, car: Wash thoroughly or vacuum and wipe. Destroy dust bags! In case of repeated or severe infestation: Use insecticide – if necessary combined with flea growth inhibitor to prevent the development of immature fleas through the various stages.Step 3: Consistent prevention: Regular application of flea protection, to prevent your animal from being re-infested.

Life cycle of fleasAdults (apparent 5% of the flea population): Live on the bodies of dogs and cats. This is where the blood sucking and egg laying takes place. The flea eggs fall off the host animal and thus are spread throughout the environment.

Eggs, larvae, puppae (inap-parent 95% of the flea pop-ulation): Live in the animal en-vironment, where eggs mature via larvae to pupae stages and finally infest dogs and cats as adult fleas. For sustainable con-trol of flea infestation, the animal environment must therefore be included in the control measures.

Fleas can multiply rapidly in a short period of time. They are active throughout the year. Fleas transmit tapeworms. They can also lead to allergic reactions, inflammations, as well as bacterial infections of the skin.

How to detect ticksCheck your pet regularly, especially on less hairy parts of the body with thin skin (head, ears, armpits, inner thighs).

How to combat ticksStep 1: Apply the Tick-Off tick twister. Grasp the tick head as close as pos-sible to the skin and twist it out with a careful twisting motion. Do not exert any pressure on the tick body, do not drizzle the tick with oil or other substances. Removing the tick as early as possible significantly reduces the risk of disease transmission.Step 2: Disinfect the bite site.Step 3: Consistent prevention: Regular application of tick protection, to pre-vent your animal from being re-infested.

Life cycle of ticksTicks develop via several stag-es of development from eggs to larvae to nymphs, which eventually develop into adult ticks. Before laying the eggs and for each of these devel-opment steps, the tick needs to suck blood lasting several days in which time it infests a mammal. The entire devel-opment cycle lasts, for exam-ple with the castor bean tick, about 2–3 years.

Ticks are active from March to October and can be found everywhere in nature (high grass, bushes). The actual tick bite is painless and usually has little consequences for animals. However, especially in dogs they can transmit life-threatening diseases such as babesiosis or lyme disease.
