From the Principal…
Kia ora all. Firstly, as this is the final newsletter for 2016, I would like to thank our volunteers who have helped Longbeach School become the fantastic school it is. The list is far too numerous to name everyone but we have had camp parents, coaches, PPP reading, car transport, fundraising, library sorting and so on. The list is huge! Thank you very much from all the staff and students at Longbeach School. Classroom teachers Rm Willowby – Mrs Stone Rm Ashton – Mrs Dunckley Rm Waterton – Miss Turpie Rm Eiffelton – Mrs McFarlane Rm Flemington Miss Yeatman Rm Huntingdon – Mrs Parkin & Miss Gallagher Also working with us will be Mrs Quinlan, Mrs Lovell, Mrs Price and Mrs Simons. As previously mentioned sorting classes out is no easy task as we divide up 8 year levels into 6 classes. There is always going to be a split. We have looked at all the factors in detail and made a judgement with the students at the heart of the matter. No one gets left behind if they do not move to another class. In each class there are ability groups regardless of their year level. Students are grouped based on their needs in particular areas. In fact groups often change throughout the day in a class as they move from subject to subject. We are constantly assessing the needs of the students and adjusting groups as necessary. Learning groups are not set in stone. Within groups in classes you will see a mixture of genders and year levels. This grouping process is called differentiated learning. This is the learning at different levels based on the needs of the learners. There is no set curriculum for a year level. It is all about needs based teaching. There are expected achievement levels which we work towards. Some of these are National Standards others are assessment that are done nationwide so we know what is expected. However, every child is different and they all achieve at different rates at different times. Sometimes students take off suddenly then plateau for a while. Students are not linear learners. Consequently the students set goals to work towards the expected achievement levels. The first of the goal setting will be at the start of the year in our 3-Way-Conferences. Next year we will start the year with 3-Way-Conferences. So classes will start on Wednesday the 1st of February 2017. On the 30th and 31st of January we will start earlier with 3-Way-Conferences. Go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and use the code q9ux6 to book your conference. If you unable to do this call into the office and we can book it for you. Longbeach Coastal Challenge. Wow what a day! A huge thank you to all the volunteers who gave up hours
and hours of their time to make this event the success it was. The Longbeach Coastal Challenge Committee
deserve a special mention as the driving force. The commitment and time given was extraordinary and we are
extremely thankful.

THANK YOU On behalf of the Organising Committee of the 10th ATS Longbeach Coastal Challenge can I please say a HUGE THANK YOU to every single parent who helped out and/or competed, to every Longbeach student who gave it a go and to the teachers and Mr Simons for helping and competing. The anniversary event surpassed our wildest dreams and we saw 1493 competitors register to compete. This is a magnificent outcome for us as a school community in terms of the funds we have raised. The total will be announced in the new year as we finalise the accounts over the next month. We could not have run such a successful event without our sponsors – all businesses in our local community, some of whom have been involved for all ten years. We value your input and your passion for the ATS Longbeach Coastal Challenge. Special thanks to our naming sponsor ATS for the enormous effort they put into the day with staff competing and helping to make the site look fabulous. To our Finishers Medal sponsor, Ray May Hose and Fittings we give a warm thank you. The pleasure of seeing the many children receive those medals was inspirational. To our three farming families – the Thomas’ the McKenzies and the Townshends – thank you for sharing your piece of paradise with us and giving us access to your properties to enable us to host such a wonderful event. To the 2016 Organising Committee – you have all put in many hours of personal and family time to make this event such a success for our school. A huge thank you to Jenny Lansdown, Matt Galbraith, Angela Cushnie, Anna Jemmett, Tamie MacDonald, Tash White, Mitch Bellew, Seaun Lovell, Jess Yeatman, Sarah Dunckley and Annabel Brook for investing the time to help make Longbeach School a special place for our children. To the Hinds and Districts Lions Club, with whom we partner 50/50, with the ATS Longbeach Coastal Challenge – THANK YOU! We could not be as successful without your input and many hours of work on the track – it is a special partnership and one we should both be proud of. We will all look forward to the 2017 event on November 26, 2017. If anyone would like to join the organising committee for 2017 please get in touch – it is a lot of fun and a great group to be a part of. Joanne Taylor Chair – Organising Committee
