From the Principal… Welcome back to another Term. Term 3 is set down to be another busy one full of exciting learning activities. Coming up we have our seniors going to Winter Sports where they will compete in Rugby, Hockey, Netball and Soccer. This will take place next Thursday. Good luck to our sports people and thank you to all of those who have given up their spare time to coach, manage and referee. A HUGE thank you to Gus Cameron, Ang Cushnie, Steve Burrowes, Katrina Gray, Sonia Etheridge, Deanna Walsh, Rach Arnold, Matt Galbraith, Ang Bellew, Nicole Williams, Nicky Lamont, Jayne McLaren, Angela Bota-Wilson and Kelly Kenton for giving up their precious time to coach and mange our teams. Soon after Winter Sports we hold our speech competitions. Each class will hold a class competition and the winners of this will go through to the Longbeach School competition on the 22nd of August. The following week we will hold the Cluster Speech Competition at Longbeach School in which Hinds and Ashburton Christian Schools will join us to battle for the coveted first places. Later this week Harold will join us in the Life Education Truck. Harold will teach the students about having a healthy body and mind in the unique Life Education Truck environment. On the 15th and 17th of August, St Johns will be here taking the students through their first aid training. Squeeze in the camp at Glentanner Station and the Sanford Science Fair for our Year 7 & 8 students. This is in addition to all the exciting and challenging learning programmes happening daily in our classrooms. All of this in a 9 week term! No wonder everyone is exhausted by the end of the term. But we wouldn’t have it any other way – challenged, motivated, excited and students learning. That’s what we are all about. A few reminders… Uniform. Please ensure we are wearing our uniform correctly and with pride. Coughs and Colds. We haven’t really had a winter yet however we have several children with coughs and colds. Please help to minimize the illness by keeping your sick child at home. Longbeach Coastal Challenge is coming up very soon. To continue to make this event the huge success it is, please please answer the call for volunteers to help run this event. The fundraising for this goes to help the students of Longbeach School.

Congratulations… Congratulations to Tyler Rose for gaining first place in the Year 7 and 8 poetry section of the Ashburton Writers Group with his poem 'Anzac Spirit'. He won a $50 Paper Plus voucher.

In the holidays we had a number of our students represent Mid Canterbury in various sports:

Hugh Cameron, Annabel & Todd Dolan were in Blenhiem with the U15 Boys & Girls Basketball Teams.

Ella Pearson, Rosie Gray and Ella Arnold were in Oamaru with the U13 Basketball Team.

Kamal Larry, Josh Bellew, Jamison Arras, Ben Pearson, Korin Chambers and Madison Foster played against Aoraki in the Ashburton Domain for the 10th and 11th grade Mid Canterbury Football teams.

Taylah Burrowes went to Wellington for the New Zealand Karate Nationals and gained two medals. Silver for her Kata and Bronze for her Kumite.

Anzac Spirit I look up at the sun. I know that someday soon it could be my last one. I’m cold inside but I have to fight, For it is my country, therefore my right. A new day begins, the sun in my eyes, I loaded my rifle in terror, walking out, I hear cries. Death is near, I sense fear. Blood on my hands fear in my heart, now it is my turn to take part. Clouds of dust and smoke fill the air, I hate this it’s so unfair. I stare at the moon in the noisy night sky, and I wonder am I going to die? By Tyler Rose
