WELCOME TO LONGBOAT KEY CENTER FOR THE ARTS 2017 SEASON!

We are thrilled to share our exciting 2017 SEASON with you! We’ve added a few new classes, new instructors, a Saturday Matinee Film Series, our “Creativity 1.5” workshops and of course, the return of our continuing instructors who bring their breadth of expertise to our classrooms.

This SEASON we are hosting some of the Center’s best exhibitions to date. In January you’ll catch the closing of our winter exhibit “Drawing Re-imagined” featuring works by two renowned artists living and teaching on the West Coast of Florida: Jack King with his remarkable sculptures and Will Corr with his captivating paintings. Beginning the last week of January and continuing through February we will be hosting our Contemporary Studio Glass Weekend which has expanded into a month long celebration of the glass medium including extraordinary exhibits, expanded programming, and activities. March will feature our “Annual Community Juried Exhibit” followed by an exhibit of Sarasota’s own Women Contemporary Artists in April.

In order to keep with this year’s “global” theme, we are introducing a new series entitled “Cultural Expressions”. We will be bringing to you various cultural experiences including engaging lectures, world music, and artist talks that will include a Celtic concert, Italian cooking, and much more. And don’t worry; we haven’t forgotten our local musicians! Bill Buchman’s “Art of Jazz” will be performing in January and in March, dig out your tropical shirts and sandals—we are going down to the islands, complete with margaritas, steel drums and great dancing!

Browse through the following pages and start making your plans to visit now. We welcome everyone to come and experience all of the arts, creativity, and culture that Longboat Key has to share!

Sincerely, Jane Buckman, Director

Opening Reception for Glass Artists Kathleen Mulcahy and Ron Desmett Alfstad& Contemporary

ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Kathleen Mulcahy’s glass works provide an opening into her soul and into nature. The water-like drops in her latest works represent notes and pauses in the silent musical score of a tone, a murmur, a slow vibration, a low distant hum.

Ron Desmett produces some of the strangest objects ever created in glass. Irregular, lumpy and black, his intentionally crude forms are at complete odds with the refined and sensual qualities normally associated with decorative glassworks. Desmett’s vessels are at once terribly homely and utterly captivating—standing solidly, inevitably at the nexus between natural representation and artistic abstraction.

Ferdinand Hampson Contemporary Studio Glass Lecture Series

1:30 – 3:30pm, dates vary Longboat Key Center for the Arts Cultural Media Room – Building 100 $100 for the 4-part series | $30 per individual lecture

To complete our line up of activities surrounding contemporary studio glass art for 2017, we are pleased to offer a 4-part lecture series created and presented by Mr. Hampson. Founder and past president of Habatat Galleries, MI., Mr. Hampson has been involved with artists working with glass for 45 years. He is the author of several publications, and has lectured extensively and written numerous articles and introductions for exhibition catalogues. Internationally recognized as a noted authority and historian in the field, his name is synonymous with glass today.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1

The History of Studio Glass

This lecture will begin with the dynamic artists whom began the studio glass movement in America. Mr. Hampson will then move on to the present “Centers of Glass” which will explore the great art glass localities from around the world.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4

How the Heck is that Made?!

Artists will discuss not only their techniques but all of the ways artists explore the use of glass as an art medium. Short films will visually reveal the processes of blowing, casting, fusing, and laminating glass. Cold work techniques which are used after the initial form is created will also be part of the presentation.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8

Why Do We Collect?

Mr. Hampson will moderate a panel discussion featuring nationally known collectors of contemporary glass. The discussion will reveal insights into the development of a collection, the display of the collection for individual and community enjoyment, and ways to deepen your understanding of studio glass and the community that surrounds and supports this unique artistic expression and achievement.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10

What Am I Looking At?

For the last session of our 4-part series, Mr. Hampson will lead a discussion of what makes a great work of art. He will describe the process of looking and placing studio glass pieces into the historic context of the contemporary studio glass movement. Images of seminal works throughout the history of studio glass will be analyzed. Participants will be able to view examples of these pieces which will be on display for this last lecture. A small reception will follow.

February 11 2046 (2004) This artful romantic drama follows the unconsummated affair of two lovers in Hong Kong in the 1960s. Along with elements of science fiction, the film frequently references the date December 24 in which many significant story events take place. Noted for its beautiful cinematography and “end-of-an-era” look and feel, this film may be viewed on its own or as the third story to the two previous films: Days of Being Wild (1991) and In the Mood for Love (2000). Directed by Wong Kar-wai, Starring Faye Wong and Tony Laung Chiu-wai.

February 18 LOST IN TRANSLATION (2003) Nominated for four Academy Awards, this romantic comedy tells the story of two Americans who meet in a Tokyo hotel. Bob is an aging movie star and Charlotte is a young wife of a celebrity photographer. The two of them create an unlikely bond and friendship. Directed by Sofia Coppola, Starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson.

February 25 WINTER’S BONE (2010) Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, this adaptation of Daniel Woodrell’s 2006 novel depicts the life of a teenage girl as she attempts to locate her missing father. Set in the Ozarks mountains of the central United States, the film explores themes of self-sufficiency and poverty against the backdrop of the meth lab underground of the rural Midwest. Directed by Debra Granik, Starring Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes.

March 18 I BUILD THE TOWER (2006) This documentary explores the life and mind of outsider artist Sabato Rodia, the Italian immigrant who conceived and created the Watts Towers in Los Angeles, with a determination to “build something big” as he recovered from alcoholism. The film’s original score features classical arrangements inspired by Verdi alongside hip-hop ones incorporating Rodia’s own voice. The film has been praised by filmmaker Ken Burns and critic Leonard Maltin as “lyrical” and
