End of Term 3
Reading the newsletter at this time of year is always a pleasure as we seem to
have crammed so much into our time since returning to the Academy in
September. You will see from the many articles that as always our students and
staff have made the most of their time, both inside and out of the classroom. At
the end of a very busy and successful term, I would like to thank the students for
their diligence and achievements so far. We have so many success stories to
share and good news items to celebrate together. I would also like to thank the
staff for their dedication and hard work, as well as parents and carers for your
continued support of Longfield Academy and our students.
Our fantastic Telescope restaurant continues to go from strength to
strength. We have welcomed over 250 members of the public to eat at the
restaurant experiencing fine dining at the heart of the Academy. The talents that
our students develop being part of this unique feature are quite frankly
astounding. This has never been more so than with the cohort of young chefs this
year.
Our open events for Year 6 coming into Year 7 next year, and for prospective Post 16 students have been incredibly successful. Once again I am confident we will be over-subscribed in September as our reputation goes from strength to
strength in Kent. We have already had a high number of applications for our Post 16 courses next year, including some exciting new courses such as Criminology and Computer Science alongside our wide range of traditional A-Levels such as English Literature and History. Year on year our Post 16 results have been of a
nationally high standard, comparing equally (and better) to many grammar schools and so I would encourage all those Year 11 students to get their
applications completed as soon as possible. Interviews will be undertaken in the New Year, and I look forward to seeing many of our current Year 11 progress
through to Post 16 education at Longfield.
We are proud to be part of the Leigh Academies Trust and to have many students choosing Longfield as the place for gaining lifelong skills. We continue to value
your support and active involvement in our learning community. Let me take this opportunity again to encourage you to contact the school with any concerns you may have. I believe whole heartedly that good relationships between teachers,
staff, children and parents are fundamental to the success of any school.
Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas, and a safe, successful 2017.
Alex O’Donnell, Principal

On Thursday 24th November a group of Year 7 and Year 13 students volunteered to help plant purple crocus bulbs in the Anderson court-yard. These were generously donated by the Rotary club to help raise awareness for their Purple Pinkie campaign to end Polio. The students really enjoyed the gardening and we are hoping the flowers bloom in a beautiful purple display in February to coincide with Purple Pinkie Day.

This year in Anderson college our students have been taking part in a collection of goods to donate to local charities for Christmas. They were tasked with bringing in toys, books, games or clothes that could be given to those less fortunate than us.
In total we have filled 15 bags of goodies to take to the local children's charity shop, six bags of clothes donated to British Red Cross and the Samaritans and six bags of food taken to our local food bank for Christmas. Both Ms Walker and myself are very proud of the staff, students and community values here in Anderson college. Mr J Stone

Midfield - Danny Khuma, Kieron Vince, Henry Stapley, Alfie Lewis, Charlie Hill

Nepal Letter Exchange
Students at earthquake-damaged Pancha Kanya Secondary School in Bhaktapur District, Nepal were delighted to receive over 100 letters this month from Year 8 geographers at Longfield Academy. While in Nepal this summer I collected letters detailing teenagers’ experiences of the 2015 Nepal earthquake and some of our Year 8 students had the opportunity to study these as part of their Hazards module in Humanities. The letters included a wealth of information about the lives of young people in Nepal and the impact of the earthquake on the rural community served by Pancha Kanya Secondary School. Our Year 8’s very much enjoyed replying to these letters and trying to understand the long term effects of the Nepal earthquake from the perspective of people their own age. Once posted, the letters took over eight weeks to arrive in Nepal where Pancha Kanya Secondary School students were excited to receive individual replies. Miss K Sullivan Trip

In November we took a group of students to an OAA centre in Cornwall to take part in some practical moderation for their GCSE PE course. Whilst there the students took part in rock climbing and canoeing, under moderation, and in their downtime had some surfing lessons. This is always a fantastic opportunity for our students to boost their practical grades and take a big step towards a stronger GCSE in PE. It also gives our students the chance to experience life away from home and learn how to look after themselves in a different social environment.

Frost Fest
On 30th November Longfield Academy held their annual Frost Fest
production.
A night of fun, festivities and good spirit matched by the high levels of
talent from all Longfield Academy students who performed, they made
Frost Fest a pleasure to watch.
Although the production revolves around the Christmas season, it had
many other pieces on show alongside the old favourites, including
‘The Diary of Anne Frank and the Piña Colada song! As a whole the
collaboration behind Frost Fest did a great job in providing a wonderful
evening of entertainment but also in securing strong exam material for
the students.
To conclude, huge congratulations are owed to Mr Mansell and Miss
Giannini, but most of all to all the students involved in doing their very
best to produce a professional and all rounded event to remember.

In the last nine months Longfield Academy have
had over 200 former students sign up to our
Alumni. Having former students come in to talk to
our current students really helps as they can talk
about what they have done for a career, how they
got there and also offer support and help to our
students that need some career advice.
If you came to Longfield Upper, Axton Chase or
Longfield Academy please sign up to our Alumni,
it’s not just to help current students but you may
also recognise friends from school and even
previous teachers.
