Below is our Dirty Dozen hit list of the WORST THINGS

TO PUT IN YOUR GREY SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING

CART. Please help make our single-stream recycling

program a success by keeping these materials OUT.

When is PickupTrash is picked up once per week. Recycling is

picked up once every other week on your trash

collection day and must be out by 7 a.m.

HolidaysTrash and recycling collection is not provided

on the following nine holidays: New Years Day,

Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial

Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day,

Thanksgiving, & Christmas. Because of this, if your

collection day falls on the holiday, or later that

same week, your collection will be one day behind

    for that week only.

We want to make recycling as easy as possible

for you. Single stream recycling allows for all

recyclable materials to go into one container (grey

container). The only thing you have to do is empty

and rinse! Please do not atten aluminum cansor containers.

Used Automotive Oil Heats Up the

    Public Works Maintenance Facility

The sanitation division has a motor oil collection site located at the City Recycling

Center. The oil collected is reused to heat two buildings located at the Public Works

Maintenance Facility. Each year, our collection site receives about 4,000 gallons of

used motor oil. This in turn means lower costs to heat buildings and reuse of used

motor oil. If you ve motor oil tt you need to dipoe of, you cn bring it by te

City Recycling Center in non-opque continer, (gllon milk jug). No cemicl

plee. Te collection ite i open ix dy week: MondyWednedy from 8:30

    .m. to 4:30 p.m. Turdysturdy from 8:30 .m. to 5:45 p.m.Just bring your

utility bill indicating you are a trash subscription customer and present that to the

person at the window and they will direct you to the collection bins.

    Call 303-651-8416for more information

Oil and battery dropoff is located at

    140 Martin Street, the Longmont

    Recycling and Tree Limb Diversion

    Center. Alkaline batteries are not

recyclable and may be placed in

    your trash.

NO Pltic Bgin single-stream recycling cartPlastic bags are the WORST contaminants

in the recycling cart. They get wet and

dirty and cannot be recycled. Plastic bags

can be recycled at Eco-Cycle CHaRM or

at participating grocery stores if they are

clean, dry and empty. Find grocery storerecycling locations at www.ecocycle.org/

    htrg.

NO Mteril in Pltic Bgin single-stream recycling cartWorkers have to slow the conveyor belts

to rip open bags that contain recyclables

and then add the bag to the heap of bags

bound for the landll. These inefciencies

    waste time and money.

NO sredded Pperin single-stream recycling cartShredded paper is too small to sort.

The pieces get wet, gum up the sorting

equipment and cause it to malfunction.

Recycle shredded paper in the bin marked

    Paperboard at the Longmont Recycling

    Drop-off Center.

NO scrp Metlin single-stream recycling cartScrap metal items of any size should not

go in your curbside cart. These items

cause excessive damage to the recycling

equipment. Please take these materials to

    the Longmont Recycling Drop-off Center

and look for the bin marked Scrap Metal.

NO hzrdou Wtein single-stream recycling cartHazardous waste such as paint, automotive

    uids, car batteries and pesticides

must be taken to the Boulder County

    Household Hazardous Waste Facility, NOT

    the Recycling Center. Call 303.441.4800

for more information. The LongmontRecycling Center accepts car batteries and

motor oil for recycling. See hours above.

NO Diper orBiohzrdou Wtein single-stream recycling cartSyringes, needles, diapers and other

sanitary products are not recyclable. Visit

    www.ecocycle.org/htrg for information

    about handling sharps safely.

NO Non-Recyclble Plticin single-stream recycling cartWhile we have added new plastic items,

many plastics are still not recyclable

because there is no market to accept them.

Plastic lids, Styrofoam and any other

plastics not listed in these guidelines are

    not recyclable.

NO Flttened Continerin single-stream recycling cartThe Single-Stream sorting equipment

    separates ats (paper) from rounds

    (containers). When containers are

    attened, the equipment mistakenly

sends them to the paper side of the

    facility, signicantly contaminating the

    paper were sending to market.

NO Cp or Lidon Gl Bottle or Jrin single-stream recycling cartMetal lids can be removed and recycled loose

in the bin. Plastic lids and caps from glass

bottles and jars should be thrown away.

NO Liquidin single-stream recycling cartWhen we compact bottles for shipping,

liquids drip and splatter, creating a sticky,

smelly mess on the sorting oor. Please

completely empty and quickly rinse out all

    containers before recycling.

NO Cermic orNon-Recyclble Glin single-stream recycling cartCeramics, china, dishes, mirrors, light

bulbs, Pyrex, porcelain and window glass

should not go in the cart! Their different

    melting points and chemical compositions

will ruin new glass bottles. If our buyer

sees just one of these on the top of a load

of glass, the entire load could be rejected.

NO Frozen Food Boxein single-stream recycling cartPaperboard boxes that were designed

for frozen foods, such as frozen pizza and

entrees, have a plastic polymer sprayed

on them to protect against freezer burn.

That same coating prevents the box from

breaking up in the recycling process. These

materials are not recyclable OR compostable.

    Special Recycling Events in Longmont

About 89 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps

are used each year in the U.S.

According to the EPA, about 12 percent of

plastic bags and wraps were recycled in 2007.

A ve-year-long study by the OceanConservancy found that small plastic bags

made up about 9 percent of the debris found

    along various U.S. coasts.

Surveys routinely show that more than 90

percent of consumers reuse their plastic bags

at least once for things like wastebasket liners,

lunch totes and pet waste pick-up.

Plastic bags are not accepted in either curbside

collection or the Citys Recycling Center (jams

    up the processing equipment).

You can return your plastic bags to grocery

store drop off sites for recycling.

    All major retail grocers

    in Longmont offer

    plastic bag collection.

It is now OK to recycle plastic caps from plastic

bottles and jugs. Just screw them back on

the empty bottle or jug and toss it into yourrecycling container. The bottle recycling market

has expanded to accept plastic caps, as long as

they are on the container. Plee note: METAL

CAPS on glass bottles are recyclable, but they

    should ALWAYS be removed

    from the bottle before

    recycling. They are

    recyclable, but separate

    from the bottle.

    Did YouKnow?PLASTIC BAGS

    Use reusable grocery bags.

Take your plastic grocery bags back to your

retail grocer. All major grocery stores in

Longmont have a collection point at the front of

the stores to take back plastic grocery bags!

City dog parks can also reuse your plastic

grocery bags, just drop by one of three dogparks and ll up the doggie bag dispenser with

your unwanted bags. The City dog parks are

located at Airport Rd and St. Vrain Rd, 21st Ave

and Francis, and at the Rough and Ready Park

    on 21st near Sunlight Drive.
