The sheer diversity of programs offered this summer at Mercy Academy, from volleyball to journalism, from a stage performance to dissection, is a God-sent reminder that every student has something unique to give the world if they can just find the opportunity to look inside themselves and seize it - and at Mercy, you can, and you will.

FAQ About our Summer Program

How can I register?Mercy is now offering registration online for our summer programs. It is easy! Go to www.mercyacademy.com, click on future students, then summer camp programs, select which type of camp you are interested in and complete the form and payment process. You can also register by completing the registration form in the back of our camp guide and mail it along with your check to Mercy Academy.

Are your summer camps for girls and boys?Most of our camps are for both girls and boys. Exceptions to this are the volleyball, field hockey, soccer, basketball (grades 4-9) and softball camps which are for girls only.

Can I participate in more than one camp?Absolutely! Students can participate in as many camps as they would like as long as they don’t fall on the same day and time.

Where will your camps take place?All of our camps will take place on Mercy’s beautiful campus located at 5801 Fegenbush Lane. If you need further information, please feel free to call us at 502-671-2010.

CampuS faCilitieS

Monica Bohn GymnasiumThe Monica Bohn Gymnasium is our main game gym. It is a state of the art facility that seats 1,200 people. The gym is fully equipped and provides an excellent atmosphere for home sporting events.

Mercy Gym 2Mercy’s auxiliary gym is complete with wood flooring and is utilized for practices by our cheer, basketball, volleyball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym is fully equipped including a built-in indoor batting cage for softball and a full-sized foam floor for our cheerleaders.

Main Field & TrackMercy’s main playing field is located in the back of campus and is part of Evans Park. Last summer we replaced the field’s natural grass with a synthetic turf system and added field lights. The synthetic turf provides an exceptional state of the art playing surface for soccer, lacrosse and field hockey games. An eight-lane rubberized track for all athletes also surrounds the field.

Bischoff FieldMercy’s Bischoff Field is adjacent to Mercy’s main field and is also part of Evans Park. Bischoff field is a Bermuda field and holds many practices.

McAuley FieldMercy has one of the best softball fields in the state of Kentucky, McAuley Field, and it was completed in 2009. Amenities on the field include in-ground dugouts, an outdoor batting cage and bullpens. In 2013 stadium lights were added which has allowed for night games. The stadium has a great atmosphere for home events.

Tennis CourtsMercy has six full-size tennis courts located directly on campus. The courts are hard surface courts and are utilized by our tennis team in the spring.

Fitness / Weight RoomMercy’s fitness facility is utilized by our Health and PE classes during the school day and for conditioning by our sports teams after school. It is equipped with advanced exercise machines and weights for the development of our student athletes.

Ed Howard Training RoomThis is a sports medicine training area located just outside the Monica Bohn Gymnasium. The area is fitted with all of the necessary medical training supplies and a whirlpool bath.

Dance StudioMercy’s dance studio is furnished with a modern Marley surface spring step dance floor, professional ballet bars and shatter resistant glassless mylar mirrors. The studio is utilized by our dance team throughout the year.

Campus FacilitiesMercy Academy has one of the finest high school athletic facilities in the state of Kentucky. All facilities are on

our 24 acre campus, in which 12 of those acres are dedicated to our athletic facilities. Coaches and student athletes, for the majority of our programs, are provided everything they need right in our own backyard!

Awesomeness of 3D PrintingThis is a youth design class that will introduce students to basic concepts associated with digital art and design. Campers will work with easy to use design software to make their ideas a reality through the use of 3D printing and programmable die-cutting. Projects will include wearable art and cool toy monsters with packaging!

Cooking CampDo you ever get home from school, raid the cabinets looking for a snack, but cannot find anything you really want? Cooking camp will provide you with great ideas for healthy after-school snacking! But it won’t stop there.

Learn how to cook meals for your family. You will learn how to make appetizers, salads, entrees, and even desserts. While at cooking camp, you will be able to sample a variety of foods. You are sure to find something to suit your taste buds.

Crochet Boot CampAh-ten-TION! Push your crochet skills beyond the limit with Crochet Boot Camp! Your drill instructor, Suzie Ledford, will get your stitches into shape during this week-long workshop focusing on various stitches and techniques. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or a new recruit, you will leave the class with some new skills and will have a lot of fun, too!

Get PsychedWho knows why people do what they do?

In this camp, you will explore the way the mind works and the secret motivations

behind day-to-day behavior, and create a window into the world

of Psychology. Campers will get hands on experiences that introduce them to psychology in a fun, challenging and engaging environment. Subtopics include: social psychology, sensation and perception, neuroscience, experimentation and much more!

History’s MysteriesThrough hands-on activities, students will think like criminalists and review mock forensic files of a historical event. Students will gather, analyze, and interpret evidence, engaging in tasks such as pouring over photographs, analyzing documents, and reading maps and charts. Students will learn valuable historical thinking skills while thinking about history like a detective. Cases to solve include the Haymarket Bombing, the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, the Freedom Summer Murders, and more!

Junior Jaguar JournalistLights, Camera, Action! At Mercy Academy’s Broadcast Journalism camp, you’ll have the opportunity to become the next star reporter, news writer, director, or producer. After a week of learning the ropes in news writing, editing, reporting, and operating our state-of-the-art TriCaster technology, you and your fellow newsies will have created a full news show! Each student will receive a DVD highlighting the week’s broadcasting stories so that you can share with your family and friends!

Learn to “LOL” in Español!Immerse yourself in the contemporary culture and language of Spanish speaking teens. From Argentina to Spain - and everywhere in between - your eyes will be opened to a world that exists now and will be even more a part of your cultural awareness into the future. As you prepare for high school Spanish, you will discover the sights and sounds that compose the “rhythm of life” for Hispanic and Spanish teenagers.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn to text in Spanish, dance like a native and virtually explore 22 countries without leaving your hometown!

The Living Body: An Adventure in Dissection and MedicineEver thought that you might want to be a doctor one day? Ever wondered what you really look like on the inside? Then this is the experience for you. Learn what it takes to become a doctor, all while exploring the world of laboratory dissection. Each day, campers will dive into blood and guts as they perform an in-depth dissection of an animal specimen. Campers will also learn about the medical school process and different options in the medical field, including general practice, surgery, radiology, and more, and will have the opportunity to interact with medical professionals in the classroom. Guests will include practicing physicians, physical therapists, and nurse practitioners. Plus, you get to keep your own set of dissecting tools! Warning: this camp is not for the squeamish, and is guaranteed to get a little bit messy.

Signing at MercyHave you ever wondered how sign language works and what the gestures mean? Come discover the basics of Signing Exact English (SEE). Learn the alphabet, numbers, colors and more! We will cover the basics as well as some fun summer signs. Leave camp with your own t-shirt that uses SEE.

Theatre Workshop: Monologue and DialogueParticipants will develop acting skills using scenes for one and two people. We will work together to form a safe and creative environment, then perform using a variety of texts from Shakespeare to modern-day, with students even writing their own monologues! Learn theatre games, acting techniques, behind-the-scenes tricks, and more!

Thinking Strategically Through GamesStudents will develop critical thinking skills in a fun interactive way that encourages team building and leadership skills. Students will learn the keys to thinking strategically through playing a variety of strategy games including chess, Pente, Stratego, Risk, Axis and Allies, and more! You’ll never have more fun while thinking so hard!

Meet the Masters Art CampCampers will make art based on the masters throughout history. We will make landscapes inspired my Monet, interesting portraits based on Picasso, and cool mobiles or stabiles based on the work of Alexander Calder.

Mercy CSIHave you ever wondered how people can be identified by their fingerprints? Or how a CSI on TV can swab a stain and confirm that it is real blood? In this workshop you will examine your own fingerprints and analyze them for their unique characteristics, see how animal hair is different from human hair, test to determine if a stain is, in fact, real blood, and use a series of forensic techniques to solve a crime scene. By the end of the week, you will be a CSI forensic expert - or at least have fun trying!

Obsessed with PinterestDo you find yourself lost in the lovely world of Pinterest crafts? Do you wonder where the hours go? Do you have more Pinterest boards than you can count? Then, this camp is for you! Each day campers will embark on a theme which will delight even the most inexperienced pinners. From headbands, pillows, bags, necklaces, sweet treats and more; your Pinterest dreams will become a reality!

Page to Stage: The Art of the 10 Minute PlayWould you like to see your stories come to life on stage at internationally-recognized Actor’s Theater? This class gives you the tools to make that dream possible. Students will learn how to create their own original 10 minute play and be provided with information to submit it to the 2015 New Voices Young Playwright’s 10 Minute Play Contest. Mercy boasts 22 students in the last few years who have received official recognition and/or had their plays produced at Actor’s Theater.

The Power of Prayer: Making and Praying the RosaryMake your relationship with God hands-on this summer. Students in this class will be provided with tools and supplies to make two chain rosaries. Throughout the course, they will also learn about the rosary’s history as well as how to pray the rosary. If possible, we will visit the Sisters of Mercy and pray the rosary with them at the convent.

athletiCS CampS

CheerleadingCheers, chants and stunts to lead the crowd and support your team! Our current Mercy cheerleaders and coaches will teach the basics of cheerleading. From motions, stunts, jumps and tumbling to sidelines and age appropriate short dances, you will learn what it takes to lead your team to victory.

August 4-6 / 6-8 p.m. Grades PreK-8th Grade $50.00

LacrosseLearn and develop game fundamentals: offense, defense, throwing, cradle passing, catching, shooting, etc. The camp will be instructed by Mercy coaches and players.

June 16 & 17 / 6–8:30 p.m. Grades 6-9 $35.00

SoccerParticipants will enjoy a three day camp with a strong focus on individual skills as well as a program to advance team tactics. Player creativity is encouraged to maintain a positive attitude toward developing her game. Daily sessions will start with training in techniques such as finishing, passing, dribbling, and ball control. Campers will then progress to team-based drills with a concentration on tactical development. The camp will be instructed by Mercy head coaches and current players, the 2013 6th Region Champions.

June 2 & 3 / 5-8 p.m. Grades 6-9 $75.00

Field HockeyTrain, get better and have fun! Campers will improve their individual skills in all major fundamental areas of the game. Mercy’s field hockey coaching staff and current players will teach hitting, ball control, passing, shooting and defending. All of this while also learning good sportsmanship and a better understanding of team play.

ArcheryArchery camp will introduce the beginner to the fundamentals of shooting the bow, keying on proper form and technique. Intermediate archers will review instruction and proper execution of the shot. Scoring and tournament regulations will be covered, along with additional shooting aids that are tournament legal. Introduction to 3-D targets and scoring will also be offered.

Softball Hitting & FieldingLearn softball skills from the Mercy Jaguar Softball team. Participants will work on hitting, base running, fielding and position work. Mercy coaches and current players take you through drills and games to build your skills. There is also a camp specific to pitchers in which they will learn proper technique. Come learn from the best to be the best!

Conditioning & AgilityDo you want to take your fitness to the next level? At this camp, we will work to improve your strength, speed and agility to make you a better athlete. We will spend time going over safety and nutrition to make sure that you get the most of your training time. You will learn proper form and technique to take your game to the next level. Each session will end with a game or circuit or a game to challenge your fitness.

BasketballThe Mercy basketball camp is designed to help campers improve their individual basketball skills in all areas of the game. Participants are taught by Mercy coaches and current basketball players, some of the best in the state of Kentucky. Campers will work on ball handling, shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding and defense as well as the importance of being a team player.

VolleyballPass, set, hit! Improve your volleyball skills with Mercy volleyball coaches and current players as they teach all areas of the game. Campers will work on passing, setting, hitting, blocking, serving and defense. They will also mix into teams and play six-on-six games. Our younger campers will be split by age and skill level, learn all the basic fundamentals, get a picture with the Mercy volleyball players, learn a cheer and, of course, have fun!
