Seagulls, a kidney transplant, brussel sprouts and a life-saving dog… All of these feature in the

wildly imaginative stories that have won the hearts and minds of judges in the fifth annual Barfoot & Thompson Young Authors Challenge.

Seven short stories have been selected as the winners out of more than 340 entries authored by children aged five to 12 years from across Auckland and Northland. These stories will be published into a book by real estate company Barfoot & Thompson and sold, with all proceeds benefiting the Starship Foundation.

Supreme winner Gulls’ Bay by 10-year-old Holly Fisher from Remuera Primary will feature on the cover of the book and be accompanied by six other tales, including:

• Bayfield Primary School, Gifted and Talented Writers Group – Rangi and Sephira

• Northcross Intermediate, Emelie Fitness – An Unnamed Friend

• Northern Health School in Ronald McDonald House Auckland – Daily Miracles at RMH

• Pukekohe Intermediate, Room 43 – Rumour Has It

• Somerville Intermediate, Room 19 – Don’t Eat the Bacon

• Don Buck School, Isabelle Cooper – Slow Joe and Fast Freddy

Peter Thompson, Managing Director of Barfoot & Thompson – the company that fully funds the programme – says

the winning students can be extremely proud of their achievement. “This year’s judging was particularly tough. We received twice as many entries than ever before and the standard of writing was extremely high. “It’s really exciting to see the students’ creativity and skill, and their growing love for reading and writing is evident in the work they produce.”

Teacher Annette Martin said it was the first year that Bayfield Primary School had entered the Barfoot & Thompson Young Authors Challenge. The Gifted & Talented Writers Group is made up

of students from year 3 – year 6. They brainstormed ideas as a class, and then all wrote a part of the story each.

Now in its fifth year, the writing challenge has enabled hundreds of students the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have their own literary works professionally published. his year’s winning students can now look forward to their own Author Workshop, run by renowned New Zealand children’s author John Parker, where they’ll polish their stories for publication. Their tales will then be brought to life in illustrations by

rugby great and amateur artist Keven Mealamu before the book runs hot off the press in October.

The past four story books have helped Barfoot & Thompson raise a combined $105,000 for Starship Foundation. Through the Barfoot & Thompson Magic of Reading programme, copies of the book are also provided to Starship Children’s Hospital and Whangarei Hospital’s Children’s Ward and given to young patients that stay overnight to read and take home.

This beautiful Californian bungalow was built in 1920. In 1926, Mrs Jane Martin and her daughter Mrs Marion Wells

moved in with 3 year old grand / daughter Mavis who was hearing impaired. Her mother worked at nearby Greers Clothing Manufacturers and twelve years later, Mavis left school and joined her.The Wells had many pets that they had rescued, including hens, cats and dogs. They knew most of the people in the neighbourhood and walked for many miles to Mechanics Bay and Alexandra Park.As the years passed, Mrs Wells nursed her mother and older sister Jana in the house with Mavis’ help. In turn Mavis nursed her mother when she lost her sight. Mrs Wells died in hospital in 1993. Mavis and her several cats and dogs continued living in the home with friends and neighbours watching over her.In 1996 Mavis heard about a woman who was certified as a trainer for hearing dogs for the deaf. She wrote to Johanna saying she wanted her dog Darkie trained as a hearing dog. Darkie was not suitable to train as a registered hearing dog, so Johanna helped Mavis get Molly trained. Molly alerted Mavis to many sounds which enabled Mavis to live independently for many years. Johanna became a close friend and helped her in many ways, eventually caring for her fulltime, until she passed away in hospital November 2011. Many locals remember her walking her dogs even when needing a mobility frame. Some still miss her sitting on the front veranda.

This character 3 bedroom home has beautiful native flooring and original features. The options are many with all the space to create your own legacy. The home is on a 491m2 site with the adjacent 491m2 section available as well. Factor in that this backs onto Grey Lynn Park and you can imagine yourself in this unparalleled space, right in the inner city. Make your mark; renovate, add space or simply enjoy!

It isn’t often that a character home comes on the market which offers the opportunity to enhance its appeal with minimal investment. But that

is indeed the case with 18 Formby Avenue. Walk up and into the welcoming veranda and take in the history of this 1920’s home which features three bedrooms, one of which has a lovely easterly facing stained glass window over the bed. I can imagine prisms of coloured light, alerting one of dawn. The high ceilings throughout add a feeling of space and include original ceiling roses and beams. The home also features beautiful native timber flooring and original doors throughout. The lounge which is situated in the front of the house has an open fireplace with the original cast iron inset. There is another fireplace in the room adjacent that would make a lovely dining room. The bathroom is well located between the first and second bedroom and with a little work could become an ensuite. There’s also a separate toilet and laundry area which at the moment is under utilised. The kitchen has all the character features of the original building and is an open palette for the new owner to wield their creativity. Open the space and create a great indoor / outdoor flow. The bones are good they just need a little work out. The home is ready to move in; however with a bit of modernizing would make a retreat that is the envy of your friends.

One of a pair, this simple working man’s cottage, understated, sits

comfortably in a street that has aged with grace…incrementally adding the odd renovation, but retaining what can only be described as that “heartland” St Marys Bay feeling.Behind small black doors, you expect small thin corridors, but what surprises is the voluminous space that opens up before you in the hallway. There’s an open-plan office off to the left, and then a short hallway past the downstairs cloakroom, to the kitchen, and open plan living dining.Renovated in 2011 by Michael O’Sullivan, who was “Home New Zealand” magazine’s 2011 Home of the Year winner, this home is sympathetically exceptional.Michael understands historic homes and structures, and was able to fold his touch lightly over the property, restoring ceiling features, and integrating extensions without a heavy hand. It is still possible to feel like an 1880’s workman when you go up the stairs to bed, or turn the key in the front door. But gone are the cold comforts…. instead under-floor

gas heating warms the rooms and the polished floorboards.Registered Master Builder Bruce Barton undertook the rebuild, and anyone who knows his work will understand the craftsman he is, and the attention to detail in all of the ceiling moldings and skirting…in a house of this age, they must look right. It has heritage 1 status, which is a relief because it is a piece of Auckland’s history. But it still has a kitchen to die for, with native timber floors, an infinity stainless steel bench, European appliances and a wall of Italian

mosaics. This flows out through the lounge, with its fixed light modern bookcase out and down to the French doors. They open onto a low maintenance garden, designed to be 2 rooms, with Olive, Citrus and Bay trees, much more appropriate for the style of the house than tropical.Upstairs two double bedrooms, one with a deck and views to the sea, share a sumptuous tiled bathroom in warm coffee mosaics and tiles, with bath and separate shower all bathed by a roof light. Nice modern clean lines that hug the centre of the home, without jarring, that is the skill in

getting it just right.Peter is moving on to a bigger place for his 2 crazy fox terriers, which need a bigger garden and more room, but to me this place needs a workingman’s dog and faithful companion!

Tough to say, easy to grow. Cymbidiums are quite often referred to by their

nickname Boat Orchids due to the hollow depression in the flower or the abbreviation Cyms. You will find around 40 natural species of Cymbidium orchids all originating from tropical and sub-tropical areas in Asia. The have a reputation for being able to survive relatively mild temperatures which makes them well suited for New Zealand winters.

Cymbidium plants are sympodial, with growth which may appear to be continuous but is in fact derived from multiple meristems. Boat Orchids grow to a height of 60cm and the racemes as high as 90cm. Each flower can have a diameter of 5 to 10cm. They bloom during the winter and are very hardy. Each plant can have up to fifteen or more flowers. The fantastic range of colours for this genus include white, green, yellowish-green, cream, yellow, brown, pink, and red and orange..

Another favourite is the Paphiopedium, which goes by the nickname, Venus Slipper Orchid

or the quite cute name Paphs. This genus has around 80 species and 13,000 hybrids. They are fairly tolerant of conditions, especially the hybrids and are easy to flower when provided with the right temperature range.

This species originates from the high mountain, growing in the forks of trees in areas such the Philippines, China, India, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia and Borneo.

The growth is totally unique. The petals have a shape that looks like a shoe, or slipper. The roots are brown and hairy and the plant range in size from 8cm to 30cm.

The flowers for both varieties last about ten weeks so make an idea

houseplant. They are one of the most popular and desirable orchids in the world because of the beautiful flowers. Brighten up your living area or office with one of these exotic plants.

It’s that time of year again and the first installment of provisional tax is already upon us. For

many, preparing for provisional tax can be stressful. Unlike Christmas, Provisional tax comes 3 times a year in August, January and May.

For many small businesses this means either basing your tax payment on last year’s result or blindly taking a stab in the dark as to how much money the business has made or will make for the a year hoping for the best at the end of year wash up undertaken by your accountant. Added to that, there is the frantic scramble to scrape up enough money to make the required tax payment to Inland Revenue on time.

If this sounds familiar to you here are some simple tips that can help you get through:

1. Monitor your profitAlthough basing your payments on last year’s results seems the easiest

way to go, if your trading results have significantly changed you run the risk of either under paying or overpaying your provisional tax. Overpaying can have a negative impact on your business cash flow, under paying can result in use of money interest and penalties being charged by Inland Revenue.

By monitoring your businesses year to date profit levels, with help from your accountant, you can accurately estimate the actual amount of

provisional tax due for the profit your business is actually tracking to make. This allows you to keep cash working in your business.

2. Set up a tax savings accountWhen planning for your tax the phrase “out of sight, out of mind” is a good philosophy to follow. To ensure you have enough available cash to meet your provisional tax installments, set up a separate tax savings account and transfer an amount periodically in anticipation of the next provisional tax installment due.

3. Voluntary PaymentsIf you’re not a good saver and putting the money away in a separate tax savings account proves to tempting, then consider making voluntary provisional tax payments to the Inland Revenue Department on a more regular basis such as monthly.

You won’t be penalized by Inland Revenue for early payment monthly

but you will be penalized if you have not paid enough provisional tax by for early each installment date.

4.Talk to your accountant. If it all seems to difficult to manage, or your just not that way inclined and would rather focus on the other aspects of your business, leave the assessing of your provisional tax installments in the safe hands of your accountant.

Withers Tsang & Co Limited offer a Profit Watch service to clients to assist them in determining the correct amount of provisional tax to pay at installment time. Our service includes a review of your business profit position to determine the expected profit for the year and the required amount of provisional tax due.

Earlier in the year we wrote

about a Real Estate Agents Dispute Tribunal decision that left agents reconsidering their obligations to purchasers. It was, the tribunal said, an essential role of an agent to fully check a title before selling a property and to provide information about what was registered on that title. Even though an agent acts for a seller, this information needed to be made available to prospective purchasers.

The issue is not going away as lawyers and agents debate just where their responsibilities lie. An agent of course acts for the vendor. The vendor’s lawyer has the same client. Calls are

being made for lawyers to prepare information packages for their selling clients to use when listing a property for sale. That sounds like a useful collection of documents – details of what

is on the title, a description of any restrictions on the use of the property, a copy of a LIM and a description of any other relevant issues. There are good practical reasons for providing this information. The buyers are better informed and they can more quickly make a decision regarding the purchase. But there are legal issues that make the practical answers problematic, particularly as it may not be sufficient to simply provide the

information. Instead an explanation of what it all means might be required.

The problem is, and the debate is about, just who the lawyers and the agents have responsibility to. They may be opening themselves up to be sued by any number of non-clients (purchasers) based on the information supplied.

Given that a purchaser probably cannot sue council for incorrect information provided in a LIM issued

to someone else, why would lawyers put themselves at risk of providing this level of information?

The debate is on-going and may call for changes to the law. We have long operated on the basis that a buyer gets their information about the property from their own enquiries and from their own professional advisers. It is a major change to move that responsibility to the vendor and the vendor’s lawyers.

Flooring and Bayleys Real Estate co sponsor this event and visit each of the 13 participating Inner City schools. The schools put on an exhibition of the childrens’ artwork that has been created during the term. The artworks are not just limited to paintings. Often the displays include beautifully crafted masks, three dimensional artworks, photographic studies and sculpture. The quality and originality of the art is impressive. Judging and deciding who is going to receive an award was not an easy task.

Some of the creative winners photographed include – Left to right, Michael Reynolds 10 yrs, Kiliona Tamati-Tupa’i 9 yrs, Piper Chapman 8 yrs, Matariki Wikaire 7 yrs, Betsy Brough 6 yrs and Dominic La Hack 5 yrs.
