Iwant to start by saying a big thanks to all mysponsors that help make my Jr. Superstar’s Ropingon April 6-8, 2012 such a success. The 3rd annualroping held at the Wildfire Arena in Salado, Texaswas up 70 entries (total of 442 entries) and paid outover $100,000 in winnings along with seven saddles,thirteen buckles and custom spurs. We ran over2,200 runs over three days in the Wildfire Arena inSalado, Texas. Congrats to Marty Yates for winning grand

champion ($1,000) and reserved champion ($500) inthe First Annual Brody’s Shoot-Out of Champions.

Peek Stands OutJosh Peek was wrestling when

he heard he had won the all-around and tie-down roping titlesat the April 12-15 Clark CountyFair & Rodeo, but he wasn’twrestling steers to the ground –he was roughhousing with hiskids at home in Pueblo, Colo.

Peek, who competed April 14and returned home afterwards,tied for fifth in the second go ofthe tie-down roping with a timeof 8.6 seconds and that was goodenough to give him the averagewin with a time of 17.5 secondson two head at the WranglerMillion Dollar Silver Tour eventpresented by Justin Boots.

My first run was really fast,

and then my second run I got acalf that had already run oncethat day and the guy missedhim,” Peek said. “So I knewwhat kind of calf I had in thesecond round, and my horsewas great and he helped me tothe win.”

Peek earned $3,250 in the tie-down roping and with his steerwrestling money included, tookhome the all-around title with$5,745, beating out Trevor Brazile.

Peek’s success so far thismonth – he also won the tie-down roping at Nacogdoches,Texas – has been partly due to astroke of luck related to a changeof horse. Peek’s 19-year-oldsteed, Cody, needed surgery tofix some bone spurs in his ankleand won’t be back until June –and that left Peek scrambling tofind a suitable replacement.

the “00” division will be split into two ropings. The top endof the “00” ropers will become “00 Select”. This is beingdone to create a more competitive atmosphere for the lowerend of the 00 ropers.Ropers will be evaluated through the Finals and after

October 10 will be able to call and check on “00” or “00Select” status.

he other day I had to go toAmarillo to the vet, get myhorse shod, and do some

other errands. My momhappened to have a doctorappointment at the same time sowe arranged our schedules to gotogether. That gave us two hours,each way, to visit and spendsome time together.

I won’t say I’m a favorite, but Iam the last of five and the baby ofthe babies. So there’s not much Ican do wrong in my mother’seyes. When we get a chance tospend time one on one, it usuallydoesn’t take long for theconversation to get deep.However, I was more thansurprised by what she had to say:

“When you were about 17 anddecided you wanted to rope, I’venever seen anyone, in my lifetime,who was as committed anddetermined once you knew whatyou wanted. You weren’t going toaccept anything but the best fromyourself. You were workingtowards a world championship andweren’t like a kid anymore. Onceyou had that goal, you went at itlike nothing I’ve ever seen before.

Since winning the world in ’08,I know you’ve had surgeries andhealth problems, but you justhaven’t roped the same. You’vegot the ranch, the cattle business,your bull business and all yourother businesses. If you’re goingto rope, you better make it yourtop priority and quit splitting timewith all these other things.”

Now I’m usually the one who’salways pumping everyone up andhere my mom’s telling me if I’mgoing to do it, I better be all in. Youcan’t split a career in half and seehow it works. It got me to thinkinghow I’ve been cheating myself.When you’re not healthy it’s easyto spend time doing other things.

The fact is I’ve never had a“Plan B.” I’ve been asked over and

over what my plans were ifroping didn’t work out. I’venever given myself an out – I justdon’t have a Plan B. One thing Ican’t deal with is not performingto the best of my ability. That’sjust not acceptable to me.My mom then said, “You’ve

What works fora pro basketball player may notwork for me.That conversation with my

mother means a lot, especially ifyou know our relationship. Shewas not calling me out – shewas revving me up. She knowsme and how I work. There’s nogreater love for us than God,but a mother’s love is a closesecond. I’m sorrowful forpeople who don’t have that

relationship with their mother.I do and I’ve been blessed witha wife that has that special loveand bond with our children.My dad’s advice is

infrequent and important. He’slike E.F. Hutton – when hespeaks, I’m listening. But formy mom to call me out, so tospeak, was so unusual it caughtme by surprise. The timing wasperfect and exactly what Ineeded to hear. She more orless asked me, “Are you all in?”– Yes Mom, yes I am.If there’s anything you

horse is never a pleasant experience. As achild, I had a Shetland pony that knew how torun off and where to run off. He knew wherethe clothesline was and where the low treelimbs were. Do you have a mind of your ownabout serving the Lord? Or do you run off onyour own?I have noticed after many years of riding

that not everyone that puts on a pair of spursknows how to use them. There are timeswhen it is comical to see a roping horsebucking down the arena because the guy ontop of him had inadvertently made themistake of locking his spurs up in the horse’sflanks. When spurs are used in the rightmanner, the talent and usefulness of the horsecan be exceptional.In Hebrews 10:24 we’re told how we can

“spur” one another on toward love and Godlytendencies. The reason we have the Word ofGod, the reason God wants us to go to a churchthat teaches the Word of God, the reason Heloves to hear our prayers is because He knowsthat these “spurs” will bring out the very best inus. They’ll remove spiritual laziness and amediocre attitude about serving the Lord.They’ll bring out the purpose for which we weredesigned.My prayer is that you let God “spur” you on.

PRO TIP NO. 2:Gound Work - Flanking and Tying from the Chute

Flanking and tying from thechute is a great way to practiceyour ground work, if it is donecorrectly. “One thing that a lot ofpeople overlook is making surethat your rope length is correct.It should be around 19 feet longfrom the chute to the calf. Thiswill make sure you learn thecorrect steps from your horse tothe calf. Its not the same feel ascoming off the horse, but thiswill allow you to learn to runwith no momentum, then whenyou get a send off from yourhorse, it will be much quicker.”On your very first run alwaysmake sure that you don’t makeany bobbles or mistakes. “Make

sure you run to the calf, or “TufKaf,” collected with momentumthat you would have from yourdismount off your horse, this willmake you that much faster in areal run.” You only get one runin a rodeo, and you want to havemuscle memory of being smoothso you don’t make those mistakesin competition. When flankingand tying whether you’re usinglive calves or the “Tuf Kaf” alwaysmake sure to never short-cut sothat you won’t create bad habits.

The easiest bad habit to createis short-cutting your flank andstring. Most of the time we wantto hurry up and get to the tyingpart and forget about the other

parts of your run. But, I havelearned from everyone I haveworked with, that in order tohave a good run you have tomake every part of your runsmooth to be fast. The best wayto accomplish that is toconcentrate on every step toensure that everything is sharpand correct. With the Tuf Kafyour fully in control – it is a toolthat allows you to emphasizeand practice correct moveswithout resistance. Then you can practice with live cattle.

One way to help yourself outof a bad habit of short-cutting isto flank and tie bigger calves, orthe “Tuf Kaf.” This will make itharder for you to just spin a tieon. “The fastest way toovercome a bad habit is tocompletely over emphasizeeverything that you do.” Thatway when you draw the bestcalf in the pen, whether it’s at arodeo or a roping, you havepracticed over emphasizing yourwhole run and that calf will be alot easier to make a good run onand be smooth.

Always remember thatsmooth is fast, you win yourbuckles in the practice pen andcollect them at the rodeos.

s I sit here this morning pondering on what to write this month, I am

reflecting on the past weekendwith my boys at the ball fields.Yep, it’s that time of year, Spring is here and with two boysin two different leagues this year,it looks like it is going to be along Little League season. Myoldest has moved up into theMinor Little League divisionwhile the other stayed inRookies division.

While helping coach bothteams, I have found how hard itis for my oldest to move into amore competitive division. Mostof the players on his team arefirst year Minor division playersthis year and they are allworking hard to make thechange and become betterplayers. We have had a fewgames already and it is amazingto me how much they havealready progressed. The firstgame of the season was ablowout with our team on the bottom side of things. I knew then it was going to be atough year.

Since that first game though,they have started becoming moreand more competitive and havesteadily improved. I watchedthem this past weekend sitting inthe dugout and watching the

game. Sure there were a fewclowning around moments, theyare boys. For the most part,though, they were watching thegame and I could almost see ineveryone of their minds thatthey were learning more andteaching themselves how to bebetter players. Much like anyother sport, winning is mostlymental. Athleticism plays a rollin it too, but learning the gameand playing against stiffercompetition has made them allimprove. I am sure by the end ofthe season, we will be a team tobe reckoned with.

This made me think howcompetition plays a roll in anysport, including roping. If a guyonly competes with the samecaliber of ropers, he is not goingto improve. Entering stiffercompetition and watching andlearning from those who ropebetter will help a roper improve.No one likes losing and if youput yourself in a place whereyou have to step it up in order tosucceed, you will.

On the other hand, my otherson who is still in the Rookiedivision has a whole otheraspect to reflect upon. His teamhas dominated the other teamsthey have faced so far this year.Most of the players on his teamare past Rookie division players

and have the experience to playwell in that division. Althoughthey are doing well, I can see achink in their armor. That is theability to lose. Now, I alreadystated we hate to lose, but insome fashion it needs to happen.It is what a baseball team or aroper does after a loss thatmakes them true winners. No, I don’t mean congratulate thosethat beat you, that’s a given, but learning to lose and findingit deep inside yourself to respectthat and learn and try harder in order for it not to happenagain is the true meaning ofbeing a winner.

Don’t think Trevor Brazilenever gets beat. I am sure hegets beat a lot, but he shrugs itoff, and heads to the next rodeoleaving that bad memory behindand concentrating on what liesahead. This is what separateswinners from losers.

I will keep you all posted onhow the season continues andhow my boys wrap things upthis year in the next couple ofmonths, but until then, trustyourself and your abilities towin, Make it a point to keeplearning and trying to becomebetter inside the arena, as wellas in life.
