WE WELCOME YOU TO

ADVENT—PREPARING THE WAY The season of Advent comprises the four Sundays preceding Christmas Day and are set aside to prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Christ into the world and into our lives. Christmas is a festival celebrating our belief that God came to us to meet us where we are...in the midst of our sorrow and struggle. So, in Advent we prepare our hearts for this great gift.

The traditional color for Advent is purple, which refers to the coming of the royal King, Jesus Christ. Through the years purple has come to be asso-ciated with repentance (think of the season of Lent). In recent years the color blue has become a way to honor Jesus’ mother, St. Mary, as that is the color long associated with her. This change in color has also opened the opportunity for themes of longing and expectation to come to the fore of the church’s preparations.

PRELUDES DURING ADVENT This Advent, the prelude will be a selection from Bach’s Orgelbüchlein, writ-ten around 1714 in Weimar. These chorale preludes were based (with the exception of two new tunes) on already existing chorales already in com-mon use in the church, in line with the seasons of the liturgical calendar (Advent, Christmas, Lent…).

Today’s chorale prelude is “Lob sei dem allmächtigen Gott.” The brevity of this prelude intensifies the strangeness and beauty of Bach’s harmonic treatment. Following the confusion of tonality throughout the work, the A major ending projects a striking sense of openness and expectancy, reflect-ing the feeling of Advent. The first stanza is presented below:

Nursery Care for infants is available. Please see an usher for more information.

Lob sei dem allmächtigen Gott, der sich unser erbarmet hat, gesandt sein allerliebsten Sohn, aus ihm geborn im höchsten Thron.

Praise to the almighty God, who has had mercy on us and sent us his beloved Son, born from him on the highest throne.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

S tir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. CHILDREN’S SERMON (at 10:15 service)

The people are seated for the readings THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11

T he spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,

to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

Page 5: LORD - stdavidsde.org · Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your

Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the LORD has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations.

The People remain standing…

The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 1:6-8,19-28

T here was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came

to testify to the light.

This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah." And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No." Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, `Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

Page 6: LORD - stdavidsde.org · Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your

They asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" John answered them, "I bap-tize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal." This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

Following the Gospel…

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE HOLY COMMUNION

THE OFFERTORY

Gifts of canned goods, food staples, paper products and cleaning supplies may be placed in the large basket in front of the altar. This offering is delivered to the

St. Patrick’s Center Food Pantry to be distributed to those in need.

MUSICAL OFFERING Let all mortal flesh

Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly minded, for with blessing in His hand,

Christ our God to earth descendeth; Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth He stood, Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood;

He will give to all the faithful his own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way, As the Light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day, That the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away.

At His feet the six winged seraph, cherubim with sleepless eye, Veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry:

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Lord Most High!
