over the next four years the Lord’s taverners, in partnership with the eCB, aim to increase the number of disabled people who access and play cricket. over two million pounds will be put into disability cricket through the national Disability Cricket Programme to increase the opportunities for disabled people to play.

Withtheincreasinggrowthinparticipationitwillbeimportantthatcoachesandvolunteersareresourcedandsupportedtocoachcrickettopeoplewithadisability.Thisguideisaimedatcricketcoacheswhoarealreadyactive,howevermaybenewtoworkinginthisarea.Theguideaimstoprovidesimpleandclearmessagestosupportcoachestodeliverqualitycoachingexperiences.

Theintroductoryguideisbrokendownintoworkingwithfourimpairmentgroups;visuallyimpaired,hearingimpaired,physicaldisabilitiesandlearningdisabilities.

Wehopetheguideprovideskeysupportandwishyoueverysuccessonyourcoachingandvolunteeringjourney.

tHe engLanD anD waLes CRICket BoaRDTheEnglandandWalesCricketBoard(ECB)arekeentohelppromoteandprovideopportunitiesforpeoplewithdisabilitiestoaccessthegameofcricketthroughtheexistingCountyCricketBoardstructurewhereprovisionhasbeenmadeavailable.

Itishopedthatthisdocument,amongstothersinthepipelinewillhelpcricketcoachesinparticular,tounderstandthedifferentchallengesthattheymayfacewhencoachinggroupsofplayerswithdisabilities.

Whetheracricketcoachisworkingwithplayerswithvisualimpairment,hearingimpairment,physicaldisabilityorlearningdisability,thisdocumentwillenablethemtobeconfidentinsettingupanddeliveringcoachingsessionstotheirrespectivegroups.

TheECBhasalongandestablishedrelationshipwiththeLord’sTavernersandisdelightedtobeworkinginpartnershiptoproducethisuniqueresourceaspartoftheNationalDisabilityProgramme.

Allplayersareregisteredblindorpartiallysighted.Ofthe11playersintheteam,atleastfourmustbetotallyblind(B1),leavingamaximumofsevenplayersfromsightcategoriesB2,B3andB4.

TherearefivelevelsofvisualimpairmentrecognisedbyECB,BCEW,InternationalBlindSportsFederation(IBSA)andtheWorldBlindCricketCouncil(WBCC).Hereisabriefoutline:

PRePaRIng to CoaCH:HeaRIngImPaIReDEnglandinternationaldeafcricketwasfirstrecordedbackin1992.Theinternationalteamnowplayallacrosstheworldagainstothertestplayingnationsaswellascompetinginworldcups.AnumberofdeafcricketclubsexistintheUK,howeverthemajorityofdeafplayersplayinmainstreamclubs.Asaresultthetransitionfrommainstreamcrickettodeafcrickettendstobemorestraightforwardcomparedtootherimpairments.Themainobstacletothisformofcricketiscommunication.

IV: Coaching awareness

OneinsevenpeopleinthiscountrysufferfromsomekindofhearinglossandtheNationalDeafChildren’sSocietyestimatesthattherearenearly35,000peopleunder25intheUKwithmoderatetoprofoundhearingloss.Whatoftenholdsdeafpeoplebackisnottheirability,buttheabilityofthosewhocanheartoincludeandfeelcomfortablewiththem.

Before you start:

• Whencoachingagroupofhearing-impairedplayers itisusefultohaveaninterpreteralongsideyou,if youareunabletosignyourself

• Eyecontactisvitalwithhearing-impairedplayers

• Ifusinganindoorfacility,ensuretheplayersare awareofanyemergencyproceduresassomewill beunabletohearfirealarms,forexample

II: Hearing Categories

Indeafcricket,allplayershavetoundergoandprovideevidenceofhavingtakenahearingtestbyanindependentaudiologist.Inorderforaplayertoqualifyfordeafcrickettheyhavetohaveahearinglevellossof55dBormore3FAHL(FrequencyAverageHearingLoss).Toputthisintocontext,aplayerwouldnotbeabletohearaneverydayconversationwithoutanaid.

Indeafcricket,theequipmentisthesameandthepitchmeasuresthesamelengthandwidthasinmainstreamcricket.Althoughthereisemphasisonthevisual,thereisnospeciallyadapted.

II: Physical Disability Criteria

Forgrassrootsandclublevelphysicaldisabilitycricket,participantsarenotrequiredtoundergoanyclassificationprofiling.

Playersatcountylevelhavetoundergoanindependentclassificationassessmenttoascertaineachtheireligibilitytotakepart.Roughlyspeaking,aphysicallydisabledpersonhastohavelostaminimumof15%functionalmobilityinoneofsixareasonthebodytoreachtheminimumstandardfordisabilitysport.Followingtheirassessment,theindividualwillbecategorisedwithinarangeof32classifications.
