Term 1 – Week 11

Dear Parents / Carers,

Thank you students, staff, parents and community members for a fantastic Term 1. There have been many achievements over the 11 weeks which include academic, creative and sporting endeavours.

I am so very proud to state that we had more students attend our first PBL Star Kid Day then we have had before, which is a result of a lot of hard work from teachers and students. I walk around the school and observe teachers teaching high quality lessons and students are engaged and participating in their learning.

As previously mentioned I am heading overseas for the next nine weeks. Mrs Natasha Zeremes (Monday – Thursday) and Miss Lana Williams (Friday) will be relieving Principal during this time. Although I am extremely excited, I am actually feeling quite sad as I know I will miss everyone greatly. I wish you all the best over the Easter holidays. May you all have a safe and fun filled two week break and brilliant Term 2.

Karen Macphail

Principal

Hardball Students in Years 3 – 6 last week had the amazing opporunity to watch the first two episodes of a new ABC Me TV show called ‘Hardball’. Representatives from the ABC as well as five of the actors attended the screening at the school. What makes it even more special is that one of our very own students, Reannah stars in the show. Reannah was required to audition and was successful in gaining the role of Salwah. Reannah and her mum were required to be on set for very long hours during the day and also on weekends. It is a very good example of how hard work and dedication pays off. We are truly very proud of Reannah in taking on this mammoth role / job and making it a success. Don’t forget to have a look at the show.

NAPLAN – Yrs 3 & 5

In May 2019 the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools. The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child's level of achievement. Each student's level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student's right to privacy is maintained. In 2019, your child will sit the NAPLAN online tests. However, children in some other schools across Australia will sit the NAPLAN paper tests this year. Federal, state and territory education ministers have agreed that all schools will move online by 2020. State and territory education authorities will determine when their schools move online. As students are assessed on the same literacy and numeracy curriculum content, regardless of whether they complete the test online or on paper, results for both formats can be reported on the same NAPLAN assessment scale. To find out more about NAPLAN Online, visit nap.edu.au

NAPLAN Online 2019 timetable The assessment window for NAPLAN Online is extended from three days provided for the paper test to nine days. This is to give schools more flexibility in scheduling and accommodate schools that may have fewer devices. The NAPLAN Online assessment window starts on Tuesday 14 May and finishes on Friday 24 May 2019. A note will go home in Term 2 with the exact timetable. Year 5 Opportunity Class 2020 Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and talented students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2020, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).

Notes have been sent home to all Year 4 students detailing instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 30 April 2019 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

The application website opens on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019. You must apply by the due date.

PBL Update

Our students have made great progress as they use positive behaviour each day at school. Our focus for Weeks 10 and 11 is being kind to others and using kind words.

This week was our Term 1 Star Kid’s Day. We had a record number of students attending which was amazing. Congratulations to all students. Your teachers and parents and all very proud of you.

On Thursday 11th April we will also be holding a K-6 PBL Assembly at 2pm under the COLA. At this assembly our normal merit certificates will be handed out as well as new PBL awards.

SRC Update This Term SRC had a very productive role within the school. They had the opportunity to actively participate in school events such as Clean Up Australia day, National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and Harmony Day. Students created informative posters as part of an awareness campaign for the whole school community. In association with Harmony Day, SRC members and their family’s volunteered in fund raising to further support our school. We appreciate all the support and donations, many hands make light work. PSSA We have had an awesome season of PSSA so far. All players have been trying their hardest to learn the rules of the game and have been putting in a solid effort into achieving results for their team. Unfortunately round 4 and 5 of PSSA were washed out due to heavy rain but we are hoping for better weather for the next two weeks so teams can get back out there and represent their school in PSSA sport.

Just a reminder to all parents and players that the code of conduct that was sent home to all players needs to be abided and respected. It is a privilege to represent our school at sporting events. Please remember to have adequate food and water as it does get quite hot and players need their energy to put in a solid effort in games.

We look forward to seeing results in this week’s games. Keep up the great work. School grounds open during the holidays NSW schools can make their facilities available to the community under the Community Use of School Facilities Policy. This doesn’t always happen due to increased maintenance, cleaning, security measures, insurance costs, and other risks. To address this, a second trial program is proposed over the coming holiday period. How will it work? Facilities would be open from 8am-6pm, 7 days a week, from 15 April 2019 to 26 April 2019

Bunting will be strung to separate the play areas from school buildings

Signage will be placed at the entrances to notify the times of access, and non-permitted activities

A Security Guard will be on site while the school is open
