Welcome to the 2nd annual Los Angeles Jewelry • Antiques • Design, where collections of renowned international dealers are embraced with the most exciting and unique gems, designer jewelry and watches, and decorative arts.

Los Angeles Jewelry • Antiques • Design will launch with an Opening Night Preview Party benefiting the FIDM Museum Fashion Council on Wednesday, January 14. Supporting a local and specifically downtown neighbor was of particular importance to us, a practice we intend to extend into the future. The show will feature exciting one of a kind gems, designer jewelry and watches, vintage couture purses, cases and decorative arts including: antique and modern silver, Asian antiquities, textiles, books, porcelain, tribal art, furnishings and accessories. A portion of the show will also be dedicated to showcasing Tribal and American Indian Art. The show will also feature special exhibits including, a Modernism Section and the National Exhibition of China- Intangible Cultural Heritage presented by the Chinese Cultural Media Group consisting of a unique Thangka Art Exhibition—featuring various kinds of Thangka works in Chinese culture and a Chinese Classical Mahogany Furniture collection—where Chinese Ming Dynasty-inspired furniture will be displayed.

Chinese Classical Mahogany Furniture ExhibitionRegions south of the Yangtze River, especial-ly Suzhou, are the birth place and main place of production of Chinese Ming-style furniture. Suzhou style mahogany furniture inherits the exquisite tradition of Ming-style furniture. Es-pecially in recent centuries, Suzhou style ma-hogany furniture has become the superior household products in China. Haiyu town of Changshu, Jiangsu Province, has been award-ed as “famous town of Suzhou style furniture”. In this exhibition, we will bring graceful furni-ture from Haiyu. We believe that the audience will feel amazing when they see such consum-mate craftwork.

Opening Night Preview PartyBenefiting the FIDM Museum Fashion Council.Be among the first to view rare gems, jewelry, antique and modern silver, Asian art, textiles, books, porcelain, furnishings, tribal art and more. Proceeds benefit FIDM Museum Fashion Council, in support of the acquisition of the Helen Larson Historic Fashion Collection.

Traditional Thangka Art ExhibitionThangka is one of the most precious treasures of Chinese intangible cultural heritage. It is the traditional Buddhist scroll painting and also an important symbol of Tibet culture. In recent years, Thangka has become a focus of collectors from home and abroad because of its distinctive cultural value. It not only implies a concept of art, but also reveals a kind of faith and spirit of Buddhism.

Traditional Thangka ArtThangka is one of the precious treasures of Chinese in-tangible cultural heritage. It is the traditional Buddhist scroll painting and also an important symbol of Tibet culture. In recent years, Thangka has become a focus of collectors from home and abroad because of its dis-tinctive cultural value. It implies not only art concept, but also reveals a kind of faith and spirit of Buddhism.During this exhibition, we try to present various kinds of Thangka to satisfy different audiences. For example, the Guan-yin of Thousand Arms, White Tara, Sakyamuni Buddha and Yellow Jambhala are all the popular themes of Tibetan Buddhism. Above all, these works of Thangka are all from outstanding painters. We believe it would be a good chance for collectors to find wonderful works of Thangka.

Thangka’s art skill is the most exquisite among traditional Chinese paintings. The procedure of making Thangka contains complicated steps, such as making the canvas, planning the com-position, finishing the line drawing and so on. Every piece of Thangka needs long time of hard work and pious attitude to accomplish. Some of them even take years to finish. The whole image of a piece of Thangka is glorious and exquisite, people have to use magnifier to see the details.

In addition, the pigments of Thangka are all made from valuable materials such as natural minerals, gems, gold, deer antlers, pearls and so on. After choosing best materials for the color, the Thangka painters need to grind these materi-als into fine and smooth powder through hand-work, so that the colors of Thangka are brilliant and durable. Such feature of pigment makes Thangka attractive and charming.

Padmasambhava is the collection of Buddhas from ten directions and three generations. He is a Mahasiddha with remarkable ability. In Tibet, people believe that he is the incarnation of Manjusri, Vajrapani and Chenrezig, and is the second Buddha. Padmasambhava has eight different forms: Guru Orgyen Dorje Chang, Guru Pema Gyalpo, Guru Nyima Oser, Guru Loden Chokse, Guru Shakya Sengeyi, Guru Padmasambhava, Guru Dorje Drolo, Guru Senge Dradog. Padmasambhava has made great contribution to the dissemination of Buddhism.

Chenrezig is an embodiment of Avalokitesvara, with silk and tassels on the body. The white body presents purity of body, language and spirit. The while lotus in the left hand means purifying the annoyance of all liv-ing creatures. On the bottom of the painting are Man-jusri, Vajrapani, Buddha of Longevity, Yellow Jambhala and Namgyalma. This Thangka has bright color and delicate brushworks, the Avalokitesvara’s face looks calm and quiet. It is no doubt an outstanding artwork.

DESIGNED and manufactured by the Siemens factory in Woolwich from 1929, the 200 Series dial telephone (aka the Neophone) is today considered an Art Deco design classic and the first truly modern telephone.

Standard issue black versions, rented en masse to customers by the General Post Office, will now command two- and three-figure sums depending upon type and condition. But those encased in ivory-coloured plastic (typically urea formaldehyde for early models and acrylic for later ones) are harder to find in good order while the small number in ‘jade green’ and ‘lacquer red’ are a different commercial proposition entirely.

Handsets in these two special colours attracted a substantially increased subscription cost at the time, enough to make them something of a novelty, even before most phones of this type were discarded or replaced as obsolete in the 1960s.

The pair of red and green 1950s-era Neophones seen at Richard Winterton of Lichfield on May 2 were both in very good condition and sold with matching bell sets (the separate pedestal unit to make them ring), a combination collectors know as ‘king pyramids’. These models also included the small exchange drawer in the

LEGISLATION designed to protect art authenticators from lengthy and expensive legal claims has been proposed in New York.

The bill, which seeks to amend the state’s art and cultural affairs law, is designed to discourage lawsuits against those who authenticate works of art in good faith and enable them to recover their expenses in the event of an unsuccessful claim.

According to The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, who have recommended the proposed legislation,

the changes would “address certain deficiencies” in the current framework and would protect “authenticators in rendering independent, good-faith opinions about the authenticity, attribution and authorship of works of fine art”.

Earlier this month the bill was unanimously endorsed by The New York Senate Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs and it will now move forward for consideration by the full senate.

The legislation comes at a time when the role of authenticators and authenticating bodies has been brought into focus following the demise of several artists’ authenticating boards over the last few years.

These include, most prominently, the Andy Warhol Foundation in 2011, as well as the Keith Haring Foundation and Jean-Michel Basquiat authentication committee, both in 2012.
