Online Witness & WOrship

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 16, 2020

Belczak’s BulletinFor Junior High, High School and College Students, “attitude” is where it is at. Having

the right attitude is very crucial to young people. For attitude is more than an opinion,

perspective, or viewpoint. It’s also bearing, demeanor, manner, even posture. Clothes, for

example, can also speak an attitude, but attitude goes beyond clothes. You can get by with

the wrong clothes, but not with the wrong attitude. Things like clothes don’t make the

person. Attitude does. For attitude, is something within that cannot stay inside, attitude will

affect relations and relationships. Attitude is how you are before others and with others.

Today’s readings speak of the attitude required of a person of faith.

Isaiah reminds the chosen people that “chosen-ness” is not a matter of nation or race, but of attitude. The

person whose attitude moves him or her to righteousness and justice is also “chosen” to belong to God’s people.

Here Isaiah is urging his listeners to move from an isolationist attitude to one of universalism. Since God’s attitude

toward human beings is always open and welcoming, not closed or prohibited, so must be our attitude toward the

foreigner and stranger.

In today’s gospel, we find the old exclusionist attitude of Israel not

only among the apostles, but also in the mouth of Jesus himself. We also find

another attitude, however, one that turns exclusivity inside out. To put it

bluntly, the Canaanite woman was a force to be reckoned with. Jesus may

have been able to quell the wind and the waves in last Sunday’s Gospel, but

He was not about to stop this woman!

The Canaanite woman’s attitude was dogged and determined, and her

prayer simple, “Help me, Lord.” Jesus even tries insult, but the woman

transforms it into a compliment. At last, Jesus reveals that he is overwhelmed

by the woman’s powerful faith. Her attitude of belief brings her rescue and

salvation.

Today’s readings are urging an attitude of supportive openness upon

those of us in the church. Ours is not to oppose or count anyone out. Our

faith is not an exclusive possession. Rather, it is an open invitation for

inclusion. As Isaiah says, God’s house is “a house of prayer for all people.” Do

I need to work at improving “my attitude?”

csa 2020

Several weeks ago a letter was sent out from our parish office encouraging your participation in CSA 2020.

The response thus far has been slow – but encouraging. I hope that many more parishioners will return their CSA

pledge card along with their pledge or gift soon.

every year since I became pastor, you have generously supported the CSA and we have always surpassed

the mandatory target. The good thing about your generous support is that all the income generated beyond the

mandatory target is returned to the parish 100%, for our own use. Because this is the way the diocese handles CSA

monies, all donations to the CSA are the best way to give significant contributions to the parish. The parish

benefits 100% from every dollar donated via the CSA Your generous support either it helps our parish to reach the

mandatory target or it comes back after the target is reached for our own use with none of the excess money

going to the Archdiocese. All other donations to our parish help to support the diocese, because all parish income

is subject to the 7% Archdiocesan tax on all parish income.

We need your support! my heartfelt appreciation to our faithful parishioners who always generously

support our parish through the offertory collection, electronic fund transfers and the CSA; and thanking the

remainder of our parish community in advance for your kind consideration of the invitation you received in the

mail to help us meet and exceed our 2020 mandatory target. With your generous support, we will address some if

not all of the following: stained glass windows; elimination of the parish construction debt; install new landscaping

along Haggerty Road; work on the administrative building; sealcoat and stripe the parking lot; and replace the

parking lot lights with LeD fixtures. These improvement projects will be funded through your support of the CSA.

As in the past I am asking every registered household to donate to the CSA. I realize that situations will

vary widely. A number of people have been financially hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic and they will have to

adjust their giving accordingly. Others are in a position to maintain or perhaps even increase their support of Saint

Kenneth Parish through the CSA. If your financial situation allows, please consider the same generous

commitment given each year during our recently completed Let us Rejoice Campaign. In all cases, I ask that you

see the CSA as a necessary and important part of parish membership and to prayerfully consider a generous gift or

pledge to this year’s campaign. Thanking you in advance for your kind consideration of this request.

Dear Dad:

I am coming home to get married soon, so get your check book out. I am in love with a boy who is far away from

me. As you know, I am in Australia and he lives in Scotland. We met on a dating website, and became friends on

Facebook, had long chats on Whatsapp. He proposed on me on Skype, and we’ve had two months of a relationship

through Viber. Dad I need your blessing, good wishes and a really big wedding!

Love, your favorite daughter – Lilly

Dad’s reply:

My dear Lilly, like wow! Really? Cool! Whatever! I

suggest you two get married on Twitter, have fun

on Tango, buy your children on Amazon, and pay

for it through PayPal. And if you get fed up with

him, sell him on Ebay! Love, - Dad

Stay safe. Stay optimistic. Stay healthy!

Women’s spirituality groupAs we move forward into the known unknown, we are revising our schedule for the remaining of this season to

complete the universal Christ as a group to the extent that this is possible. We will continue our meeting on Zoom

on the 3rd Friday, August 21st at 11:00 Am for those who want to participate in an online forum. Rebecca Viola will

send out the link prior to the meeting time.

On August 21, Chapter 16 - Transformation and Contemplation, Chapter 17 - Beyond mere Theology: Two

Practices, and the epilogue and Appendices. We still have the option for those who are willing to write a brief

summary regarding: if this book challenged, enriched, confirmed or confused you? And specifically, in what way?

By the end of August, please send your responses to Sally at [email protected] who will then collate them and

send them to each of us whether we responded or not.

We will be continuing with the Zoom format until further notice. Our September meeting will be the 3rd Friday,

September 18th at 11:00 Am. We will use mystic Caryll Houselander’s book “The Reed of God”. Please order the

book on your own and read Part One; emptiness, Fiat, Advent, Pastoral.

Peace and Love, Sr. Arlene
