The Salesman

Our 2017 Lotterywest Festival FilmsThree brand-new Australian premieres have made it into Season Two of our Lotterywest Festival Films program – Irish charmer Handsome Devil, British Shakespearean tragedy Lady Macbeth and spectacular Norwegian drama The King’s Choice – all landing in Perth fresh from debuts at festivals overseas.

After the popularity of past documentaries at PIAF, we couldn’t miss the chance to show musical odyssey The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble and the enriching Fire at Sea, both reminders that factual films hold a special place on our screens.

The Salesman and Graduation are prize-winning works from leading lights of film in Iran and Romania. Both shine a spotlight on family dilemmas and offer audiences insight into life in faraway places.

If you were wondering which actors are top of their game right now, Isabelle Huppert and Kristen Stewart would have to head the list. Their performances as women on the move in Things to Come and Personal Shopper show us how much an onscreen performance can make us feel.

Each film in this season is its own story of course, but put them together and we have a cinematic journey around the world.

Perth International Arts Festival acknowledges that our events take place on the lands of the Noongar people and we wish to pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this Country.

A rich drama about starting over, this film showcases arguably the world’s greatest actor, Isabelle Huppert. After years of tending to her pompous husband and frail mother, university professor Nathalie finds herself single and independent in middle age. She accompanies her young student Fabien to an Alpine retreat, seeing in him a freedom and openness that she is now able to pursue for herself. This inspiring film is directed with great feeling by Mia Hansen-Løve (Father of My Children) winner of Best Director at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival.

Maureen is a young, smart yet isolated American in Paris, where she buys clothes for a fashion-world celebrity whom she seldom meets. She is also a spirit medium attempting to connect with her deceased twin brother and becoming increasingly spooked by messages that urge her towards a ghostly confrontation. With her intense emotion bubbling under a cool exterior, Kristen Stewart is compelling as lonely millennial Maureen in this cocktail of ghost yarn and sly satire on haute couture. Personal Shopper is a highly distinctive film and was joint-winner (with Graduation) of the Best Director award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Kristen Stewart has become one hell of an actress. TIME OUT

Studious Ned feels like the only one at his all-boys Irish boarding school who doesn’t share the school obsession with rugby. But at the start of a new term Ned’s world is rocked by his bold new English teacher, who encourages him to form an unlikely friendship with Conor, Ned’s tough but protective new roommate – who happens to be a rugby star. Sweet, sympathetic and with a great indie soundtrack, Handsome Devil will delight those who remember the joy and pain of growing up.

AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE

A tense and inspiring tale from the early years of the Second World War, and the number one film of 2016 in its home country. It is April 1940, and Norway, a neutral nation, is unprepared for the threat of Nazi Germany’s advance across Europe. Faced with an attempted coup from collaborator Vikund Quisling, elderly King Haakon is faced with a choice – should he recognise Quisling as Prime Minister to prevent bloodshed, or abdicate to inspire Norway’s resistance? With its vast, highly-charged battles and stealthy political games, The King’s Choice is a full-blooded epic, and a gripping account of history at a turning point.

It’s the 1860s and Katherine is the young wife of arrogant northern England landowner Alexander. Kept under her husband’s cruel control, Katherine finally has a chance to assert herself when Alexander leaves on an extended trip. A provocative love affair with stableman Sebastian is just the start of Katherine’s drastic battle of wills with her oppressors, as she goes to increasing lengths to protect her new freedom. Although adapted from a Russian novella, this Lady Macbeth – with its stark locations, anti-heroine and dark vengeance – feels completely Shakespearean.

A seductive mix of sex, murder ... and fabulous frocks. THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

What wouldn’t we do for our kids? Determined to help his brilliant 18-year-old daughter Eliza pass her university entrance exam, respectable doctor Romeo begins to call in favours from friends with influence. One good turn leads to another and before long Romeo is drawn into a circle of favours – the very thing he has spent his life teaching Eliza to avoid. This joint-winner (with Personal Shopper) of the Best Director award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival is a gripping, serious tale by one of Europe’s most brilliant and morally engaged storytellers.

Eighteen months in the making, Fire at Sea is a documentary that observes residents on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Part of Italy, but only 100km from Tunisia, Lampedusa is a Mediterranean hotspot for migration from Africa in an otherwise sleepy part of old Europe. Fire at Sea follows ordinary Lampedusan men, women and children living their lives, and in their company we’re given a deeply humane vision of the refugee crisis that we rarely get to see. After their apartment in Tehran is damaged in an earthquake, married couple Emad and Rana move to a strange new flat. One evening a mysterious incident occurs at home and Emad struggles with Rana's subsequent withdrawal. As with the previous films of Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi (A Separation, About Elly, The Past), The Salesman has a brilliant understanding of the psychology of a marriage. Emad may seem chivalrous, yet a growing impatience with his wife reveals his inner control freak. Winner of Best Screenplay and Best Actor at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

This life-affirming documentary celebrates the power of music to uplift and unite. The Silk Road Ensemble was established by cellist Yo-Yo Ma to promote collaboration between cultures and is an ever-changing group of musicians from countries including Iran, Spain, Syria and China. This triumphant film from the director of Oscar-winner 20 Feet from Stardom (PIAF 2014) focuses on Yo-Yo Ma and four key musicians, each of whom brings something wonderful to the mix. ROLF DE HEER & MOLLY REYNOLDS

Join us to celebrate the work of two of the most vital filmmakers in Australia in a world-first retrospective.

Over 30 years Rolf de Heer has created a constantly surprising, hugely varied body of work that frequently sides with ‘outsiders’. This selection focuses on those films made in remote rural Australia that trace an increasingly deep connection with Indigenous Australia.

Documentary artist Molly Reynolds began working with de Heer on 2005’s Ten Canoes, a film brilliantly devised with the Yolngu people of Ramingining in Arnhem Land. Finding rich layers of meaning in Ramingining and its favourite son David Gulpilil, Reynolds and de Heer went on to produce a suite of three outstanding works – each one standing alone, yet also creating a fascinating sequence.

All sessions will be introduced by Rold de Heer or Molly Reynolds.
