Figures used in this issue are from the following sources:Louisiana Board of Regents; Louisiana Tech Office of Intellectual Property and Commercialization (OIPC); ULS Economic Impact Study, 2009; NCAA Federal Graduation Rate Report, 2009; NCAA Academic Progress Report, 2010; National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) report, 2010.

The Tech Report is made possible through the support of the Louisiana Tech University Foundation. Louisiana Tech, a member of the University of Louisiana System, is an equal opportunity educator and employer.

There is strength in numbers.

For more than 120 years, with teamwork and pride, Louisiana Tech University has established itself as a premier institution of learning, of service, vision and purpose.

No one in the University is “just a number.” Yet the numbers do add up, like links in a chain. Together, we lift and pull and climb.

Together, we are One.

Numbers Don't LieToday Louisiana Tech clearly stands alone as the flagship of North Louisiana universities. If there was ever a question, it’s been answered in the past three years, among the most trying periods of our state’s higher education history.

But instead of losing ground or standing still, our University gave back and is moving forward. This 2011 Tech Report highlights a few of the ways we did it.

Numbers tell a story, and not always a happy one. As you are well aware, the University lost more than $15 million in budget money for the coming year, including $13 million in stimulus money alone. But other sources were tapped; other opportunities were seized. Revenue has come from performance-based funding – the largest amount of all public universities in the state – from extreme management of the University’s prior budget, from cuts, and from additions of outside income, including our new and promising relationship with Murphy Oil. And you have risen to the occasion, not only with your encouragement, but also with your financial support.

The result is a very good “standstill budget,” maybe a good two-year budget with no reductions, no furloughs and no classroom, administrative or staff cuts.

Tech is moving forward. Our people – the Tech family – have picked up the slack.

Numbers don’t lie. Even through recent trying times and unavoidable problems, our freshman enrollment has increased, as have our building projects and expansions, our land acquisitions for Enterprise Campus, our nationwide recognition and the contributions, much acclaimed, from each of the five colleges.

In late summer we received more proof that the nation is taking notice of the quality and performance of Louisiana Tech. According to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges list released in mid-September, Louisiana Tech has achieved a First Tier ranking among “National Universities.” Tech is achieving at the highest levels and positioning itself among the top institutions in the country.

The reasons include purpose, service and vision, and the will to want it more than others.

But maybe we’re best fueled by our belief in and execution of this guiding tenet: the way to move forward is to give back. Louisiana Tech is doing both. We’ve sacrificed, and by doing so in the toughest of times, we’ve survived and thrived. Now we move forward with renewed vigor, with optimism and with hope.

President, Louisiana Tech University

This is the education behind the education, these service-learning projects central to the mission of the University. Learn by engaging. Gain by giving back. Help all by helping one at a time.

Faculty. Greeks. Student-athletes. Religious organizations, campus clubs, honors and pre-professional societies. When it comes to giving back, Louisiana Tech makes it a family affair. A Tech Family affair.

President’s Award, AgainLouisiana Tech is again the only public university in north Louisiana and one of just three public institutions in the state to earn the national distinction of being named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

And Tech was recognized in May by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) for its leadership among institutions of higher education in Louisiana in supporting volunteerism, service-learning and civic engagement.

09

“This recognition is a reflection of the continued commitment of our faculty, staff and students to educating Tech students for life. The identified projects exemplify how best to involve students from academic disciplines, athletics and service organizations to provide meaningful learning and service to our community and our children.” Kenneth Rea, Vice President for Academic Affairs

Number of Tech community service projects honored with special recognition by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Submitted by a diverse group of faculty from various disciplines, the entries were chosen by CNCS because of their scope and innovation and because of the measurable community outcomes as a result of the projects.6

Hi Neighbor!Who doesn’t want a good neighbor? Louisiana Tech IS one, to Ruston, to Lincoln Parish, to north Louisiana, to the global community.

Some of Tech’s vibe is intangible: the infusion into the community of youth, of new ideas, of vitality. And some of the University’s payoff to its neighbors of more than a century can be measured in dollars and cents.

Either way, grateful to be a thriving partner in a welcoming community, Tech pulls its weight and then some.

Do You See What We See?Without vision, Louisiana Tech wouldn’t even be a dream.

But more than 100 years ago, something grand began. One building. Six professors. A handful of students.

Now national leaders. National champions. National difference makers.

Tech is international businessmen and entertainers, soldiers and teachers, graduates who make policy, who make things happen, who help make our world go ’round.

But it all began with vision, caught and captured more than a century ago. It grows on, expanding for today’s students, and for tomorrow’s.

$15,442,000 Total reduction in annual budget last year which Tech was able to withstand – with ingenuity and without furloughs or classroom, administrative or staff changes

3,100,000 Dollars pledged in private funding to the “Campaign for a New Integrated Engineering and Science Building”

42,000 Square footage of the building the College of Business will soon call home on the east edge of campus

1 Louisiana Tech’s newest student housing community, “Park Place,” earned South Central Construction’s Best of 2010 Award of Merit in the higher education/research category

EDA Awards Grant for LA_i6Louisiana Tech in mid-October received a highly competitive grant that will help strengthen the production and promotion of 'Green' technologies coming out of the University and into the marketplace.

The U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) awarded Tech a $1.1 million i6 Green Challenge grant to establish the LA_i6 Proof of Concept Center, making Tech’s one of only six proposals in the nation to be selected.

The LA_i6 will partner with companies along the I-20 innovation corridor in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas to support and expedite the introduction of “green” technology innovations into the market and to optimize the environmental and economic impacts of those technologies.

The i6 Green Challenge is a multi-agency, national competition focused on accelerating high-growth entrepreneurship in the United States.

A patent application of special note: the works of Dr. Erez Allouche in developing geopolymer concrete. Tech has already established a number of partnerships, is deploying products to test under real field conditions and expects a Louisiana manufacturing operation of this sort during the next two years. This work has been receiving global attention as a way to produce useful products from an industrial waste product that would normally occupy space in a landfill.

16

“This award from EDA and their partner federal agencies is recognition that the economic development mission of Louisiana Tech is innovative and impactful, and it holds great promise for the future of our region and for the nation. The new LA_i6 will generate tremendous opportunities for sustainable, high quality economic growth right here in north Louisiana.”Dave Norris, Director of Louisiana Tech’s Enterprise Center

More than Meets the EyeSometimes, what you don’t necessarily see is what Tech gets. In the often painstaking securing of patents and grants, the University flies under the radar of the masses but far, far above the average of other research universities involved in similar projects.

$80 million Amount Tech faculty currently has in active grants

40 Percentage of Tech faculty active as investigators in sponsored research projects

5 Patents awarded this year to one inventor, Dr. Vir Phoha, each in the cyber security area

1 Number of times faculty member Marie Bukowski of the School of Art has invented something. Her “Dielectric Nanopartical Paint and Microfluidic System to Enhance the Economics of Variable Matrix Printmaking” was the result of her interdisciplinary collaborations that were fostered during her fellowship as an Institute for Micromanufacturing associate

“At our Inventors’ Recognition Event in October, I was thrilled that the honorees included inventors from four different colleges. And even though the College of Business did not generate any inventions, their faculty played some crucial roles in helping the inventors in the commercialization process as well as in exploring entrepreneurial activities related to their inventions.”Les Guice, Vice President for Research and Development

Believing is SeeingLouisiana Tech administration and faculty, even its students, continue a strong, tangible commitment to making the University one of the top research and discovery institutions in the country.

Imagination meets collaboration meets perspiration. And then, invention. All because of a vision.

Believing is seeing.

$8,000 Amount the Roadster’s inventors, a team of engineering students, took home in prizes from the Eco-Marathon, more than any other U.S. university

646.7 Miles per gallon managed by Tech’s Urban Concept vehicle, “Roadster,” to win first-place in its class at the 2011 Shell Eco-Marathon Americas

4x The amount Tech’s license/option activity has increased during the past five years. In a word: quadrupled

4 The national average of ROIs (reports of invention) per $10 million in research expenditures; Tech averages between 12 and 23 ROIs

From January of 2006 through December of 2010, Louisiana Tech has achieved the following:

132 Reports of invention (ROI)

76 Patent applications

25 Patents issued

25 Licenses and options executed

23 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Awards with partner companies

9 Surviving start-up companies (since 2003)

20

“Innovation provides motivation - the opportunity to improve and change, the challenge to grow and expand, and the excitement that drives persistence and accomplishment. Our students and faculty believe they can make a difference, in education, in energy, in environment, in infrastructure, in healthcare, and in many other arenas, and so they see solutions that work.”Dr. Stan Napper, Dean, College of Engineering and Science

Building the Future TodayThe University continues to make improvements and enhancements to create new environments for advancement.

$1,613,000 Amount of a grant benefitting Tech and managed by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources’ “Lead by Example in State Buildings” program through the 2009American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Funding was distributed by a competitive application process for projects that reduce energy consumption and have a positive impact upon the environment. Air conditioning chillers serving the Student Center and the Lambright Sports Center were replaced with funding through this program

$45,000,000-plus Investment in Louisiana Tech Research Park to date, including Enterprise Campus and improvements to Homer, Texas and Louisiana streets

19 Acres of land acquired and developed for Enterprise Campus at Louisiana Tech Research Park, now nearing completion of the first phase with the opening of Tech Pointe, a multi-tenant facility that will support the demands of ’round-the-clock high-tech companies

$12.4 Cost in millions of capital outlay from the state to help fund the new College of Business Building; other funding has come from private contributions from some of the College’s most generous and active alums

4 Length of Enterprise Campus in city blocks, from the original site of the Tech campus east to historic downtown Ruston. University Hall, originally Prescott Library and then the Visual Arts Building, is the anchor to the main Enterprise Campus. Tech Pointe and the under-construction Business Building are the first buildings constructed in the Enterprise Campus

23

“Our strategic growth - evidenced by our evolving environments for academics, research, outreach and economic development - has placed us in the top tier, in the state and in the nation.Dr. Terry McConathy, Executive Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School

25

Educational Double VisionThe University’s outreach and engagement with public and private partners is stronger than ever.

Tech teams with other regional brands and companies for a variety of reasons, all mutually beneficial. It’s simple: if the University and its partners grow stronger, the Tech student body, the community and north Louisiana grow stronger.

The relationship between the region’s only doctoral-level public research university and the region’s largest corporate entity is now a year old. Murphy USA, a Fortune 125 company, continues to put into place components needed to ensure that their employees pursue their education through Louisiana Tech. With the partnership comes potential for educational impact, civic culture enrichment, research, and economic and workforce development.

Tech’s Graduate Certificate program for Advanced Communications Systems is being co-taught by faculty in Engineering and Computer Information Systems at CenturyLink headquarters in Monroe, where approximately 60 employees are taking courses. The College of Business offers an Executive MBA there as well. The University has organized the Clarke M. Williams Distinguished Seminar program for CenturyLink employees and brought in two national-level speakers in the fall. (The speakers – former Research Director of the National Security Agency and former Executive V.P. of Disney Imagineering Eric Haseltine, and Google Chief Technology Officer Michele Weslander Quaid – came to campus for round-table discussions with faculty and staff as well.)

Tech works in each of these partnerships, including ones with Cyber Innovation Center in Bossier City and with regional companies involved in the EDA i6 Grant, to build the pipeline to support their future workforce needs.

24

Page 15: Louisiana Tech UniversityGirls Clubs 06. 08 President’s Award, Again ... Teresa Weatherspoon: Named one of the top 15 players in WNBA history, Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer,

26

'Little' Things Mean a LotIt’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Success really is in the details.

People are doing things daily to make Louisiana Tech better. There are always long-term plans, but in the meantime, there are small steps that equal big strides. Add those daily doses up and what you get is a vision constantly expanded, one good deed, one good plan executed at a time.

Barnes & Noble College Booksellers and McAlister’s Deli celebrated grand openings on the campus in 2011. New retail and food services are always a plus from students, faculty and staff, but corporate partners like Barnes & Noble and McAlister's offer opportunity for the people of Ruston, too.

Revenues generated from these companies are reinvested back into the University. And by joining with corporate partners such as these, ones who share the same organizational philosophies and commitment to excellence, Tech is redefining customer service and specialized services across its campus.

Tech Connects: The University welcomed its 25,000th Facebook “fan” this year – a virtual population size exceeded only by LSU among public universities in the state. With an additional 2,000 Twitter “followers” – as well as “Flickr” and “YouTube” sites – the University is using social networks to communicate everything from academic to athletic accomplishments to emergency messages to school closures.

Lagniappe Ladies is one of Tech’s stealthy supporters. This group of Tech alumnae and friends pools financial resources, then awards grants to campus organizations, teams, projects and initiatives that it deems would make the most significant positive impact on the University and community.

This giving circle awarded 10 campus groups in 2011; the grants totaled $35,704.67.

$4,500 Louisiana Tech Professional Aviation Department

Moving ForwardLouisiana Tech’s top priority is its students.

The University fails in all areas if it misses the mark in only this one.

And so, Louisiana Tech daily goes about the business of educating and challenging and developing its students in a safe and supportive way, in a technology-rich, interdisciplinary learning and research environment.

We are a community. We are a family. We set goals, meet demands, climb the mountains together as students, staff and faculty.

Higher. Deeper. Wider. Powered by each other and by true purpose, we continue to cut new paths in performance.

Good SportsLouisiana Tech’s athletic history is rich and respected.

All-Americans. NCAA Champions. Banners and trophies and legends.

The Bulldogs and Lady Techsters are about winning, and winning the right way.

Now that history and those traditions are expanding in a very tangible way. The Campaign for Louisiana Tech athletics – Quest For Excellence – continues to pay dividends, and the payoff will be a multi-million dollar facility to rival that of any other mid-major in America. The multipurpose facility will stand as another testimony to the University’s purpose of academic and athletic excellence.

72 Tech’s student-athlete graduate percentage rate, best in the state of Louisiana among football-playing schools

8 Number of Tech’s athletic programs (of 16) that recorded their highest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) score ever

6 Where Tech Athletics placed nationally in the 2011 Texas A&M Sports Management Institute’s Excellence in Sports Management Cup, recognizing the most efficient and successful athletics programs in the country

3 Tech athletic programs that recorded a perfect APR score of 1,000

“Great faculty enable Tech to compete nationally for funding to support our research and doctoral programs. At Louisiana Tech, we encourage students to become involved in research even as undergraduates, and we plan to expand these opportunities.”Dr. Terry McConathy, Executive Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School.

In Their HonorThis fall, the University honored a few of its heroes and most distinguished ambassadors in a most special way. Now students of tomorrow will come to know about these dedicated servants and visionaries who’ve gone before.

Four facilities now have new names:

EnrollmentIn early September, Tech welcomed its largest freshman class since 2006 and realized increases in both transfer and undergraduate students.

As is always the case, good students want to attend good schools. Tech’s incoming students recognize that Louisiana Tech is a University where they’ll receive an outstanding education at a fair price, one that will repay over and over again.

No. 1 in FoundationThe highest priority of Louisiana Tech, its most important component and purpose for being, is its students.

This will always be the case at the University. And this will always be the No. 1 purpose of the Louisiana Tech Foundation.

Students.

In the past three years, the Foundation’s direct support of the University has topped $10 million, and perhaps the most important part of that has been scholarship support, direct support of today’s Tech students.

Last year, 13 percent of Tech’s alumni contributed to the University, support that increased access and opportunity for talented students and enabled Tech to recruit and retain world-class faculty.

With purpose and vision, the Foundation serves.

“An amazingly consistent factor throughout Tech’s storied history is the support of the alumni and friends. Another record year in fund raising is a reflection of the ever-growing pride and enthusiasm of those who continue this tradition. Our donors know that their gifts are used wisely and for the purposes they specify, and these generous people are providing the Edge of Excellence for this University.” Corre A. Stegall, Vice President for University Advancement

FRIENDS AND FAMILY: Bulldog baseball letter winner Gary Patterson (with President Dr. Dan Reneau) is one of Tech’s many supporters; in April, the Ruston businessman made a $1 million gift to the Quest for Excellence, the most ambitious athletics capital campaign in the University’s history.

Reason Number OneToday’s students stand on many shoulders. Yesterday works with today for tomorrow.

The Louisiana Tech University faithful understand that. Education is a team effort, a combination of devotion and awareness and passion.

Without support and help of friends and alumni, Louisiana Tech would not be making headlines as a “Tier One” University, a “Top Colleges List” selection, a “National University.”

Every gift of time and finances makes a difference, makes THE difference. Always has and always will. The University will continue to thrive as long as its alumni, family and friends invest in its mission, which is an investment in each other.
