Everythingstartedtochangeforthebetterwhen,duringtheinitialinterviewsandmeetingsatHilda’sPlace,hefinallyadmittedthatheheardvoices. Lamonthadbeenhearingvoicesfor30yearsandtoldnoone. Hetriedquietingthevoicesandtheviolencethat“they”elicitedwithdrugsandalcohol.Theunpredictableviolenceandaddictionwerethecauseofhisseparationfromfamily,lostemployment,andhomelessness.
Thedaythathesharedhismentalhealthsecretandtrustedsomeonewiththatrealitywasthedaythathewasabletostartgettinghislifeback.LamontwasreferredtothepsychiatristonsiteatConnections,wasdiagnosed,andwasabletoreceivetherightmedicationthatfinallysilencedthevoices.Astaffadvocateaccompaniedhimtohiscourtdate(morethanonce),makingapleatothejudgethathelpedhimreceivedrugrehabandaspotinahalfwayhouseinlieuofjailtime.

WhilelivingatOurHouse,Malikfocusedheavilyonemploymentandfinancialsecurity.Hewentthroughtrainingtobeasecurityguard,obtainedthePERCcardneededtoapplyforsuchjobs,andfoundemploymentasaguardinoneofthedormitoriesatNorthwesternUniversity.Atthesametime,heworkedcloselywithafinancialliteracytutorandbegantopro-activelybuilduphiscreditrating.
29Hopingtogetbetter(notovernight)hours,Malikwasrecentlyjob-hunting,whenFoundKitchen&SocialHouseinEvanstonapproachedConnectionslookingforemployees.Malikappliedandisnowworkingfull-timeatFoundinajobwithagoodwage,aschedulethatworkswellforhim,andgreatpotentialforadvancement.
