This is a yearly report of the progress and activities of the Love forOrphans charity set up in 2011. Love for Orphans was unofficiallyfoundedintheheartsofafewvolunteerswhocametoIringa,Tanzania,in Summer 2011. The project Love forOrphans is dedicated to supportTanzaniabasedNGOIRUDI–Iringaruraldevelopmentinitiativewhichmanagestheprojectlocally.
AtthemomenttheprojectisfocusedonaprimaryschoolinthevillageofItagutwa.TheItagutwaschool was opened in 1977 and it is the only primary school for the village with 3771 inhabitants.Theclassroomsanddeskswereinaverypoorconditionastheschoolhasnothadanyfundingfromthegovernmentsince2003.Theschoolhas387childrenand5teacherssotheteacher:studentratiois1‐77.Lotsofthechildrenareorphans.
Wehopethatwewillbeable tohelp thesechildrenandchangetheirpresentand future lives,providing them with an education and food. We hope this will encourage them to become moreindependent,allowingthemtocarefortheirfuturefamiliesandtheirwholecommunity.Ourgoalforthefutureistohelpmorechildren,moreschoolsandmorecommunitiescooperatingwithIRUDI.
Theyeargotofftoapromisingstart,wheninJanuary6moreorphansweresponsored.Thiswasanencouragingsignofcontinuedsupportafter13orphansweresponsoredlastyearduringthebirthoftheproject.Withthefirstsemesteralreadyunder‐way,LoveforOrphansbeganakeensearchfor
moresponsors,andinFebruaryanothersixorphansweresponsored!
InFebruary,duetothewinds,aclassroomroofwasblownoffatItagutwaschool.Whilstthiscouldhavecausedseriousrepercussionstotheschoolandeducationofthechildren,volunteersbeganfundraising.Themoneyraisedwasenoughtoreplacetheroofandforthechildrentoreturntoclass.Willhardreported“Dan,RachelandIwalkedfromthevillagetotown(23km)forthejoywehadtoseetheworkdone.”Thefollowingmonth,morehelpwithrenovationwasprovidedbyvolunteers,whomanagedtofix40desksatItagutwaPrimarySchool!Thechildrenwereabletolearnincomfort,nolongersittingonthefloor.
InJunevolunteerKamilihad
heardthatthechildrenhadnothadfoodforalongtimeandthistouchedtheirhearts.TheydecidedtosendthemoneyforeverychildatItagutwaschooltoattendapre‐paidlunch.Thislunchconsistednotoftheirusualcupofporridgemadefrommaizeandwater,butofabowlofriceandbeans!Themoneyboughtrice,andtheschooldonatedbeanswhichwereharvestedfromtheschoolfarm.

Eatingthismealwasaspecialandmemorable
occasion.Notonlywasitthefirsttimeforthewholeschooltohaveapropermealtogether,butthiswasthetypeofmealonewouldassociatewithChristmasday.LoveforOrphanshasreservedfooddonationsforspecialoccasionsforthechildrentoavoiddependency.ThenextmealhasbeenpaidforbyJessieMottram’sfamilyandfriends,andwillbeeatenattheendoftheschoolyearasagraduationcelebration!
LaterinJunemoregenerousdonationswerereceivedbyIRUDItohelpthechildren.ThroughLoveforOrphansIRUDIreceivedadonationofover£500fromKingsLangleySecondarySchoolthroughKarenBird!Themoneywasusedtobuyatotalof89orphansablanket,afork,aspoon,aplate,amugandabagwhichhadateddyinit.Inthebagweresmallgiftsrangingfromtoothbrushes,toothpaste,deodorantsandperfumes.ThechildrenwerefrombothItagutwaPrimarySchoolandKiwereSecondarySchool.Karen’sdonationalsoboughttenexercisebooksforeachchild.Willhardtoldusinexcitement“weinvitedthelocalradiostation,aswethoughtthiswouldbeourbestchancetoraiseourprofile.”Whatanincredibleevent!
InthesummermonthsmoreLoveforOrphanscamefloodingin.VolunteersJessieMottramandJeniMcHughalsoprovided300exercisebooks,200pens,100pencilsaswellaspaintsandpaintbrushesforpaintingItagutwaprimaryschoolinJune!

Volunteersbeganpaintingtheprimaryschoolwalls,whichbeforeweredullandgrey.Thechildrenarenolongergreetedbydulllifelessclassroomsbutbytherevivedandwelcomingsurroundingsofnewpaintedlearningaidsofnumbersandwords!
Thissummer,evenmorelovewasgiven;throughadonationof200,000TshillingsmadebyRobynMcDonald.This
donationwasfortheneighboringKitapilmwaprimaryschoolinruralIringa.WealsoreceivedfirstaidkitsforKitapilimwaPrimarySchool,thankstoJohnWalshandTalitaDaSilva.Whatanamazingsummer!
Whilstthishasseemedambitiousforonesummer,thewilltohelpneverfoundered.Yetanotherprojectarose,fundedinpartbytwovolunteers;JessieMottramandJeniMcHugh–aschoolforgirls!

Asaresulttheyare
exhaustedwhentheygoto
sleep.Thiscandramatically
affecttheirstudies,but
worsestill,inmanycases
theydonotattendschool.
JessieMottramandJeniMcHughdonated1.73millionTshillings(over£700)toabuildingprojectforagirlssecondaryschoolclosertothevillage,fundingallcurrentbuildingworkontheschool,whichwouldotherwisebeatastand‐still.
Duringtheirtimespenthelpingwiththisproject,theymovedlargerocks,loadedandunloadedmanybricksintoandfromthetruckreadyforbrick‐laying,shoveledandfetchedwaterfromthenearestwelltomakecementandhelpeddiganewwell.ThenearestwellsarealsoalongwalkawayformanyvillagersinItagutwa,sotheywillbenefitfromthenewschool'swell.Thelocalprojectcoordinatorsaresogratefulforthiscontributionthattheyarelayingastoneinthebuildingintheirnames!

ThissummertheLoveforOrphansteamreceived18sponsorshipdonationsforprimaryschoolorphans!Thankyoutoeveryonewhosponsoredanorphan!ThesechildrenareneardestituteandhaveoneornoparentsoftenhavingpassedawayduetoHIV/AIDS.Manyofthemhavealsosufferedthelossofsiblings,uncles,aunties,grandparentsandfriends.YOURloveisprovidingthemwiththehopeforabetterfuture,andtheynowliveintheknowledgethatsomeonecares.
37orphansweresponsoredforthe2012academicyear,13ofthemareatKiwereSecondarySchooland24areatItagutwaPrimarySchool.Thatis37lesschildrensleepingonthefloor,and37childrenwithinsuranceofonemealperday.InadditiontothisthenewschoolisbeingbuiltandtheLoveforOrphanssupportbaseisever‐growing.
Aswelooktothefuture,theLoveforOrphansteamareworkingonexcitingnewprojects.The‘PostcardsProject’isunder‐way.WearesendingdesignsofpostcardstotouristhubNeemaCaféinIringatown,andothersimilarplaces.Theaimofthisistoraisemoneyforatractorforthevillage.Thetractor,wehope,willcreateasourceofsustainablefoodstability,limitingthetemptationfordependencyondonationsforfood.Thetractorwouldalsogenerateincomeforthevillage.Otherfundraisinginitiativesconsistof‘SupperforOrphans’aswellasgiftcardsforfamilyandfriends.
AfteraninspiringyearwewouldliketoextendanenormousthankyoutoWillhardforhistime,effortandunwaveringcommitmenttocoordinatingtheprojectlocally.Wewouldalsoliketothankallthevolunteers,sponsorsanddonorswhohavetouchedtheheartsofthesechildrenandtheircommunity.
