Feast Day of St. Louis de Marillac—Wednesday, May 9, 2018

Loving and compassionate God, we celebrate with great joy the faith and works of our patroness St. Louise de Marillac.

Instill in us the of her love, the tenacity of her belief, and the tenderness of her

care for the most abandoned. Draw us

together into the light of your presence and help us

to trust in the power of your Spirit, leading us to

ever closer to you, who live and reign forever and ever.

Amen.

Father Robert Fulton

On Wednesday, May 9th, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Louise de Marillac, our Patroness. The story of her life is inspirational, so I want to tell a portion of it below.

Louise was born in Le Meux in Northern France in 1591. Her mother died when she was a small child. She lived in the household of her father until he remarried. She was cared for and received an excellent education at the royal monastery of Poissy near Paris, where her aunt was a Dominican nun. She lived there until her father’s death. She was 12 at the time. She received the education of an aristocratic woman. After her father’s death she lived with an unmarried woman and learned the art of household management and the use of herbal medicines. While living with the Dominicans, she felt called to Religious life, but her family encouraged her to marry, and she did so, to Antione de Gras in 1613. They had one son, Michel. While Louise ran her household and cared for her son, she was active in ministry in her parish. She had a leading role in the Ladies of Charity, an organization of wealthy women dedicated to assisting those suffering from poverty and disease.

Her husband died in 1625 after a lingering illness, cared for by Louise. After his death, Louise still felt the call to Religious life. About the time of Antione’s death, she met Fr. Vincent de Paul. Vincent served as her Spiritual Director and mentor. In 1629, Vincent invited Louise to get involved in his ministry with the Ladies of Charity. In 1632, Louise made a spiritual retreat seeking inner guidance regarding the next step in her life. She concluded that it was time to intensify her ministry with proof and needy persons and still maintain a deep spiritual life. Louise was now 42 and she conveyed to Vincent what she had discerned. Because of this, the Company of the Daughters of Charity came into existence.

Vincent had been busy forming the Ladies of Charity for years, consisting of French women from the noble classes. These women had been instrumental in bringing funds and caring for the poor, but many of the women found it very hard to work among the poor. So, Vincent with Louise founded

the Confraternities of Charity, made up of the people of parishes, many of whom were peasants themselves. It was these initial women drawn to service that became the nucleus of the newly formed Company of the Daughters of Charity.

The Daughters of Charity were unusual in their time because they worked and lived among the poor. Most Religious communities existed behind cloister walls in a monastery and performed a ministry of contemplative prayer. By maintaining mobility, the Daughters were able to provide effective service to the poor. Their distinctive habit, a grey wood tunic with a large headdress of white linen, was the usual dress of peasant women of the 17th century. They wore this habit until 1964. Today, the Daughters of Charity do not wear a

distinctive habit. They have returned to their roots and wear the dress of the day. Louise de Marillac was canonized in 1934 and declared patroness of social workers in 1960.

This is a rich history for our Parish to live up to. I believe we have done a good job with our own Society of St. Vincent de Paul, an organization of more than 100,000 men and women in the United States. I believe our Parish ministries have tried to live up to the example of Louise and Vincent in caring for others. So, I wish all of you a Happy Feast Day and be proud of the great tradition of service St. Louise de Marillac has left us.

LOVE ONE ANOTHER

In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to “love one another as I love you” (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise.

In this Sunday’s selection from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God’s love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer “shows partiality” to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God’s love extends to all people, and so should ours. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In ancient Rome, the beautiful month of May was dedicated to the goddess Flora, the patroness of flowers and new life. May 1 was considered the beginning of abundant growth, and a day for public festivals aimed at expelling winter. Even after Christianity took hold, the customs of the pagan feast lingered behind.

Long ago, there was a thirty-day devotion to Mary, sometimes called “Lady Month,” which began on August 15. By the eighteenth century, the custom of assigning devotions to months of the year was developing. June, for example, was the month of the Sacred Heart, and October was for the Holy Rosary.

Beginning with the Jesuit Order in Rome and spreading through-out the world, May has been celebrated as the month of Mary, the Blessed Mother, for more than two hundred years. That was a welcome remedy to some enduring pagan practices, such as maypole dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. Some historians say that in ancient times the May Queen was actually a human sacrifice. Devoting May to Mary is undoubtedly a better thing to do.

ALTAR SERVER TRAINING

Save the date! Boys and girls, have you thought about becoming an Altar Server here at St. Louise de Marillac? You must be in the 5th grade or higher, have made your First Holy Communion, and have a desire to serve. Training sessions will be held June 11th through June 13th, from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm. Trainings are held in the Church. All future Altar Servers must attend all three training dates.

May is National Bike Month and is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. National Bike Month was originally established in 1956, and is a chance to display the many benefits of bicycling and to encourage more people to get on a bike. National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride, whether you bike to work or school or to Mass, whether you ride to save money or time; pump those pedals to preserve your health of the environment or simply to explore your community.

Parents should research childcare providers.

Parents need to be the first line of protection for their children, and this includes thoroughly screening anyone who has access to the children. Ask for background information and confirm that all workers have the appropriate clearances before com-mitting to a daycare or childcare provider. Annual Celebration of Mother’s & Children

St. Louise de Marillac Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul

To honor our Blessed Mother Mary during the month of May, the St. Louise de Marillac Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will hold their annual celebration of mothers and children. St. Vincent de Paul has designated Veronica’s Home at Mary’s Mercy Center in San Bernardino as the recipient of our celebration. Veronica’s home is a long term Catholic residential facility for mothers and their children that provides a healthy alternative to abortion, domestic violence, substance abuse and homelessness. Beginning Mother’s Day, May 13, 2018 we will have a collection box in the Parish Center. We are asking for the following donations:

Thank you so much for your participation.

NEW clothes for children ages 1 to 9, and pajamas, socks, and underwear. Diapers size 3 to 5.
