House Masters Report As I glance out my study window I can’t recall a wetter summer term but, as indicated by the reports in this newsletter, the boys have been is as busy as ever. Thankfully the rain gods were generous to us (just) on the night of the House Music Evening: cer-tainly a highlight of the term and one for which I must publically thank all the performers and, of course, the artistic directors par excellence, our very own Messers Kefford and Wilson. A thoroughly en-joyable evening was concluded with a delicious BBQ (I can’t claim to have made all the chocolate brownies myself although I think I did on the night) and the evening was only tarnished by England’s untimely exit from the European Football Champi-onships (blast those Italians – with apologies to the Bounous family!). The end of the Summer term is a celebratory time that is always tinged with the melancholy of good-byes. The current Upper Sixth (along with three from other years) move on to pastures new and we wish them all good fortune – I am sure that there will be some sadness on their leaving but they are ready to move on and this is just as it should be . In addi-tion, two house tutors have been promoted to pas-toral roles in other houses: Mike Brookes to Warden

of North and Alex Forsdike to Deputy Housemaster of East. We wish them both well in their new roles but knowing that a little bit of both of them will al-ways be Loveday. It is a sign of what kind of place Cranleigh is that a day into the summer holidays I have seen about a dozen members of the house back in school partak-ing in Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions and rugby training. Indeed Loveday boys will be very busy over the summer holidays on school trips to Greece with the Big Band, to India on the Himalayan Expe-dition, to Morocco on the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition as well as CCF camp, score board operat-ing at the Open Golf at Lytham St Annes and proba-bly a few more I have overlooked….Cranleighans are nothing if not busy and wish them all safe jour-neys. The house refurbishment continues over the summer and as I write this a day or so into the summer holi-days a skip has appeared outside the house and George is getting very excited at the drilling and banging noises emanating from the boys’ side. A final plea from me – please make sure the boys come back with hair the ‘right’ length and colour and that any new suits that are purchased are ‘dark’ (as it says in the school uniform code). Many thanks. I wish you all a peaceful and fun-filled summer and look forward to seeing you all in September. Andy

Junior House Tennis We went into the house tennis confident of our chances that we could gain a good result. We had a

strong team consisting of Orlando Taylor, Jamie Lin-ford, Joss Pinnington, James Harris, Charlie Forrest, Ollie Pope, Noah Hathaway, Harry Moore, Kyrylo Polyvoda and myself. The competition itself was carried out as a round robin event in which all the Houses competed against each other matches against their respective pairs. In the first round we faced North, where we won convincingly by 21 games to 14. This meant we progressed to the second round as the leaders. Here in the penultimate round we played Cubitt where we also won this time by 20 games to 15. In the last round we faced East in which was a closely contested round however eventually we came out on top winning 18 out of the 35 games, which meant we overall came first.. A special mention should go to Joss Pinnington and James Harris who were the only pair to win all their matches. However, it has to be said that all the other pairs had positive results that contributed to this outstanding victory. A big thank you to all who participated and supported, and hopefully Loveday can put in another good per-formance next year. Senior House Tennis Loveday went into the tennis as underdogs, but with a team of Tom Farrelly, Ollie Edwards, felix Irwin-Brown, Will Jay, Milo Maxton, Cameron Hender-son, Freddie Kindon and Will Nicholls we always had the chance of an upset. Each player put every-thing they had into each game, and it came down to the last game against North to see who would come 3rd. Farrelly and Edwards earned a 3-3 draw and won 3rd place by one game to beat North

House Riding This term started with the Surrey Show jumping and Dressage Championships, back in April. The Inter-mediate 90cm team with house members Fred Phil-ips and Tom Lane just missed out on the title, finish-ing in third place. Then the heavens opened... and although dressage continued the ground turned very slippery, very quickly and jumping over an open course did not seem like a good idea. The dressage team, in which Tom was, came second, just shy of being crowned Surrey Champions. We then went Berkshire college to do jumping with style, in the Intermediate class, and ended up in fifth position from a team which included Tom and Fred: Fred finished in third spot individually. Unfortunately our Open team could not complete: however there was an individual placing for Fred, third again. We then went on a mission to qualify for the Na-tional Championships at Open level in the Arena

Eventing competition, on a very wet Saturday at Sparsholt College. This was Tom’s first school event on his new horse. The following day we were back out competing for the school at the NSEA Father’s day show. The Open team, with both Tom and Fred in it, won the class. This means the school is now set to be represented at every level at every disci-pline at the National Championships, a feat that will not be repeated by many other schools in the country. Tom Lane

House Athletics It is hard to remember an occasion in recent years when the weather had such a notable impact on a House Athletics competition. The athletes had to battle against heavy showers and an almost water saturated track and field arena: nevertheless the Lov-eday competitors were not deterred and came ex-tremely close to winning the event overall. In the Juniors section, all the Houses were of equal poten-tial and our group ended up only six points behind the leaders. There were notable performances from Jamie Linford who achieved first place in the High Jump ( out of eight for all events apart from the Re-lays ), a great effort from Matt Coates who came second in both the 800m and 1500m races, and spir-ited performances from James Bennett who finished third in the 100m and first in the Discus: James Pask did well to earn a good third place in the Shot, before the 4 x 400m Relay team finished a very creditable second (out of four) Our Intermediates’ team won their contest overall against the other Houses, with some outstanding performances. Hugh Phelps cov-

ered a huge 9.72m in the Shot to come first, Kuziva Ndewere recorded the fastest time in the school to win the 100m along with the 200m, and Angus Young dominated the middle distance running by beating all other competitors in the 800m and 1500m. They were impressively supported by Na-than Thorpe and Kola Fadhunsi coming second in their respective events of the 100m and the 400m, and George Bryden along with Bill Bathurst who came third in the Javelin and High Jump. The 4 x 400m Relay team recorded the fastest time to score the maximum points. In the Seniors events we came “a competitive third”, with the House Captain Henry Taylor leading the way with a superb throw of just under 40m in the Javelin. Kevwe Fadahunsi cleared 1.70m in the High Jump to take the full honours, whilst Ed Spencer put in a very creditable performance in the 1500m to finish second: Ed Roberts was tucked in behind him in the same race for third spot, and Henry Taylor achieved a similar position in the Discus. Again we did incredibly well in the 4 x 400m Relay beating all other fancied quartets. We must also mention all the other member of the House who took part and who therefore supported Loveday magnificently: it was a tremendous collec-tive effort, and who knows, we might have won the whole afternoon if the weather had allowed us to run the 4 x 100m in the Juniors and Intermediates. Very well done to one and all.

House Swimming competition In a tense fixture where any of three Houses were favourites to win, Loveday performed fantastically: our Senior team secured either first or second in all of their events, and some of our younger stars earned valuable points. Ben Steffens managed to win both his events (100m Individual medley and 50m Butter-fly). Other firsts came from the Junior boys in the form of James Bennett’s performance in the 50m

freestyle and Matt Coates’s participation in the 25m Butterfly. The gala remained close throughout with only 5 points separating 1st and 3rd going into the final Relays. Despite Loveday winning 4 of the final 6 Relays, we were denied first and second positions, instead finishing third, in one of the closest House fixtures this year!

House Golf

We played east first up. Harry Blevins played very well without his own clubs but lost coming down the 8th after having played great golf. The match went down to the wire with Tom Cooper putting in a great performance without using his own golf clubs to put the scores to 2-1. Our other players were Ollie Pope who also played very well after filling in last minute and narrowly losing by 2 holes to Colin Montgom-ery’s son who proved that playing golf from an early age really does help. This put the scores level at 2 all, with me and Tom Cooper winning, and Charlie Gilbert drawing coming down the 9th. Gilbert was playing the best opposition by far in the whole com-petition with a handicap of less than ten. He made a great account of him self by losing on the last hole by a put after he had just lipped out. We came to a narrow defeat after it being 2 all with me and Copper winning with a few narrow losses we didn’t make it to the finale but would of definitely of come in third. Bill Bathurst

Junior House Cricket We went into the competition with a confident side with many A and B team players. This showed in our first match against North House after we re-stricted them to 62 and completed a 9 wicket win. Special mention must go to Matt Coates who bowled extremely well and followed that up with a 40 not out and also James Harris with a very strong 20 not out. This led to us playing against Cubit in the Final. On paper we were identical and that is what the match showed with them just creeping through to win in the last over with 2 balls remaining. Special mention must go to Ollie pope for a great 45 off 30 balls . James Harris for another sold innings of 25 with some fabulous bowling to claim two wickets in a row. But last but not least Joss Pinnington who took two fabulous catches to the amazement of him-self and us. Tom Cooper

Senior House Cricket In the first match we played Cubit and batted first, we got off to a poor start losing a few early wickets but Jack Scriven got 28 and Brad Scriven got a great 50. This took us to a total of 93. In reply they man-aged a mere 63 off 12 overs with the bowlers sharing the wickets. In the final we played East and after a tight bowling performance we restricted them to just 69. In re-sponse Jack and Brad Scriven got off to a great start but we then lost Brad and Thorpe but we managed to win with 2 and a half overs to go with Jack scoring 42 not out .Therefore we were the overall winners. James Corbishley

Junior School Play This year Miss. Lockwood, for her third ever play at Cranleigh School, decided to put on a play called Beasts and Beauties. The play consisted of six tales from around Europe, some famous like Beauty and the Beast and some less well known like Kari and the North Wind. Loveday had 5 performers in the play: ranging from Tommy Cooper a money-producing-goat to Joscelin Pinnington a very camp Prime Minister. George Berry was also in the play as a narrator, explaining the chaos of two plays: The Juniper Tree and Beauty and the Beast. Jamie Lin-ford stepped up to the mark as the only Loveday 4th former in the play, he played amongst other things a rather less glamorous goat; producing not money but Revels Chocolate! Milo Livesey played a massive part backstage helping to make the set and also to do the lights on the night.

H o u s e M u s i c E v e n i n g Many of the finer musicians in Loveday performed to a warm and enthusiastic audience in the acousti-cally friendly Emms Centre Atrium for the annual House music evening. There was a great variety of texture and mood to entertain a notable number of families and friends on a rare dry, sunny and com-fortable day. With two high Union Jack flags adding a patriotic backdrop to the occasion, it seemed very apt for James Bennett to open the proceedings with Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” as a trumpet solo, the tune to “I vow to thee my country”. A number of boys perhaps then had the promise of that Euro 2012 quarter final clash between England and Italy on their minds, others the brief reflection of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Classical works from Vivaldi to Shostakovich filled the first half with plenty of good colour: the piano, cello and violin were the pre-ferred choice, and each of the soloists demonstrated notable musicianship and sensitivity. There should be a particular mention for Harry Moore and Ian Lee for their special performances.

After a brief interval for cool glasses of Pimm’s, there was foot tapping in the auditorium as Alexan-der Hills and Giorgio Bounous began the second half by increasing the tempo. There was scope for suc-cessful duet and quartet items for saxophones and guitars. Kuziva Ndewere eventually took to the pi-ano, after a late start from home, to play one of the more extravagant medleys (I think I heard at least six different tunes!). The Loveday Big Band concluded the concert in an impressive style to create an exu-berant mood: the conductor invited the audience to sway to “I want to hold your hand”. Tremendous thanks should go to all of the musicians who took part and for all their hard work in practis-ing for the occasion: it certainly was a delight to wit-ness wonderful sounds and great house spirit.
