Summer 2012

It never ceases to amaze me just how much the South girls can pack into a term and 

still remain cheerful right through to the end … well, relatively! I have just returned 

from a crazy but great fun evening with my 4th Form in TASC playing all kinds of wacky 

games with the West 4th Form. Wow, what a year! Some have played cricket against 

the MCC ladies team; many are playing hockey, netball at county level, and the musi‐

cians and budding thespians have taken the school by storm. LVth  have had their first 

taste of GCSEs and escaped unscathed. They are a strong, loud (painfully so at 

times!), united and talented group and I can’t believe they have been two years in my 

care and have survived. The UVth have worked hard for their GCSEs and dare I say it, with no fuss or hysteria. (Yes, we do pro‐

duce calm, unflappable girls in South!). The L6th are taking on the mantle as leaders of the house, and my warmest congratula‐

tions goes to Emily Robinson ‐ Senior Prefect (the first one in South for a long time!), Imara Gluning ‐ Head of house, and Ellie 

Sutherland ‐ her Deputy. They are also supported by an excellent team of 4th Form Prefects and House Reps. So to the top ‐ my 

wonderful, irrepressible, gifted, adorable (at moments) U6th. What a year you have been, lead by the Churchillian qualities of 

Emily Coleridge and the exuberant Rosie Peters. Thank you for all you have done for South this year and your housemistress. 

We will miss you. We also say farewell to Miss Morland and Dr Jackson who have been incredible tutors. So, my 2nd year has 

ended as South Housemistress and I can hand on heart say I really love my job. Of course, Miss Greenwood, Miss Sturdee, 

Claire (with the amazing help of Mrs Griffiths and Kim whilst Matey has been away) make it all worthwhile and a lot of fun. My 

deepest thanks to my long‐suffering husband Dan! He pours the much‐needed wine! Have a great summer.

Mrs  F re t t ’s  Repor t  

Parent ‐Daughte r  Char i t y  Tenn i s    On the 22nd April, South House hosted a charity mother/

father and daughter tennis tournament. The day started 

with glorious weather and pairs of players turned up with 

extra parents to support. Many mothers had generously 

donated cupcakes to sell in aid of the charities, Tildy’s 

Trust and Beyond Ourselves. Once Miss Greenwood had 

assembled everyone into their groups the tennis was off! 

Everyone played superbly, but eventually it was called off 

due to a sudden turn in the weather.  

 

Fortunately we had all 

already had at least 

three matches. Thank

wonderful event! 

Another year has passed and although I am 

old, I am not deaf. I know some of you adore 

me …. and why not? I am cute, cuddly,  

affectionate and have good listening skills. I 

overheard Mrs F asking some girls to be peer 

mentors and I’m most upset she didn’t ask 

me. I’ve had years of training listening to the 

Fretts go on … and on! It’s been a bit quiet here without Matey. 

She is really the only one who loves me unconditionally, although 

Claire lets me sit under her desk and doesn’t yell when I sneak in 

to get a look at the biscuit tin. I’ll miss you all. I’ll miss your 

squeals, your singing, your arguing (it’s no good ignoring me, I can 

hear!) and your mess. Please think about me in the summer as I’ll 

have no‐one to give me apple cores, left over noodles and  

partially eaten Bourbons. I’ll leave you with some canine jokes:  

Q: Why did the poor dog chase his own tail?  

A: He was trying to make both ends meet!  

Q: What do you get if you cross a sheepdog with a rose?  

A: A collie‐flower!  

Q: Why do dogs wag their tails?  

A: Because no one else will do it for them!  

F rodo ’s  Corner  

House athletics was a great success for South this year. De‐

spite the bad weather conditions everyone competed very 

well and in high spirits. South won both the Junior and Sen‐

ior races, but unfortunately lost the Inter‐girls races. But this 

still placed us 1st, alongside our co‐house, Cubitt, who won 

the boys competition.  Records were hard to break due to

House  Badminton  

House  Swimming  

House badminton took place at the beginning of this term 

with both the Junior and Senior teams winning, which led to 

an overall victory for South!  Both teams consisted of three 

pairs, the Junior team included Olivia Chesser, Poppy   

Glaister, Claudia Berry, Allegra Clark, Ella Flashman and Holly 

Gluning. whilst the Senior team was represented by Emma 

Collier, Hannah Lock, Olivia Cope, Millie Crane, Caity O’Brien 

and Rosie Peters. It was a great success and thank you to Liv 

and Caity for coaching the Juniors. 

South very much felt like the underdogs as they took on the gauntlet against West in House swimming. Our ambition to beat 

them, even just narrowly, was unfortunately not realized, but there were some successes to celebrate. The 4th Form actually 

won their age group, which was particularly impressive as only two Southies (Fayruz and Charlotte Livingstone) are in the 

swimming team. There was brilliant support from the whole House—the U6th certainly matched the rest of the House in terms 

of volume of screams and cheers. Apparently, the Loveday boys could hear our chants all the way from the swimming pool! 

Well done on a great team and House effort, and better luck next year!

House  Tenn i s  On Thursday the  5th July, 16 South girls took part in Junior 

House tennis against West. Everyone played very well,  

especially as we finally had some sun to motivate us. Unfor‐

tunately West won (by quite a lot) but we had a great time 

and we look forward to hopefully beating West next year!

and Kimi Zoet all took 

part in the Junior 

play “Beasts and 

Beauties”. It was a 

collection of 6 short 

plays based all over 

Europe, all being clas‐

sic stories or myths. 

The play ran over 4 nights and was a great success. Cate 

Philip played the bride in the “Blue Beard”, Emily played 

the mother of the frightened bride. Gaby executed her 

role brilliantly as the ugly sister of Kimi playing the role of 

Beauty in “Beauty and the Beast”.  They enjoyed the ex‐

perience a lot and can’t wait to participate in a new play 

next year.  

Duke  o f  Ed inburgh  

The Bronze practice expedition helped 

us to work together as a group and 

learn from our mistakes for the real 

expedition. During the walking hours 

thankfully there was no rain, but after 

we had put up our tents it started to 

rain ‐ it was perfect  

timing. The view of the hills we had on 

the next morning was amazing and I 

thought it was an amazing experience. 

Silver assessed expedition, New Forest: We walked for 3 days in torrential rain 

for 20k each day, in the most miserable conditions imaginable!! However we 

didn’t get lost and kept our spirits high by encouraging and motivating each 

other until the very end.  

The Gold practice expeditions were under‐

taken during the Easter holidays, and  

recently Abby Doherty and Teresa Yoon just 

completed their final expedition to  

mid‐Wales last week, enduring some of the 

wettest weather Wales has seen (quoted by 

a Welshman!). The Morocco trips are set to 

go out later on this year and we wish them 

all the best.  

On Thursday 28th June, Poppy Glaister, Clem‐

mie Ryder‐Smith and Olivia Chesser played a 7 

hole round of golf against a West team contain‐

ing both L5th and 4th form. In the end South 

narrowly lost in a match that was extremely 

close the whole way through.

House  Cr i c ke t  Although the weather was not on our side (in the end we played on the  astroturf), House cricket was still a triumphant success for South. Some excellent performances came from Eva Solt and Clemmie Ryder‐Smith with the bat, helped out by Phoebe Osborn, Katie Bowser and Chloe Allison with the ball, and a special mention must go to Charlotte Lucy for some brilliant catches. The match was very close in the end with a tense final over, but well done to everyone, especially the 4th Form who are showing that the future is bright for South House cricket teams! 

House  Rounders  House Rounders was split into the 5 

age categories: the U6th won their 

match in a very close contest 

against West; L6th won extremely 

convincingly (with a 12:5.5 score); 

but all 3 Junior yeargroups lost after 

a valiant effort against West. Al‐

most every single Southie batted, 

bowled or fielded in one of the 

matches, and House spirit was at an 

all‐time high, with masses of sup‐

port from NTC girls, the House staff 

and Frodo!

Having finished their GCSE  exams, eight members of South and West 

U5th  swapped pens for running shoes on Sunday 24th June and joined 

the crowds at Epsom Downs Racecourse to take part in the annual ‘Race 

for Life’.  They were inspired to run in memory of their beautiful friend 

Tildy Curran who, with great bravery and dignity, lost her fight against 

leukaemia in September 2010 at just 14 years of age.  The girls them‐

selves wrote of their venture: 

‘We are participating in race for life to represent Matilda Curran. Tildy 

was the bravest girl you could ever meet and she was a fighter to the 

very end. Her character and fortitude in the way she dealt with the men‐

tal and physical pain of her illness has been an example to us all. She was 

always happy and smiling whatever the weather! Her spirit and laughter 

still lives within us.’ 

Appropriately adorned in the trademark pink of ‘Race for Life’ they covered the 5km as a team in 38 minutes, raising an aston‐

ishing £1529.93 for Cancer Research.  

T i l dy ’s  Race   fo r   L i fe  

On Friday 18th May a second performance from the winners of the Helen 

Wareham Competition took place, in the Encore Concert. This was where 

the winners of each of the four sections (woodwind, piano, singing and 

brass), alongside the winners from each of the sections from the Prep 

School, played a piece of their choice. Our very own Southie Lulu Golden 

performed ‘Granados‐Cassado Intermezzo’ from the opera Goyescas on the 

cello, and another Southie Chloe Allison effortlessly played with virtuosic 

technique a rendition of ‘Rondo danzante‐Improwisazione’ by Bergmann. 

The sad thing about this concert was the realisation that this was the final 

performance that Lulu and Chloe would perform at Cranleigh. We wish 

them both the best of luck with their music in the future but we look for‐

ward to the new talent from the younger years in South. 

“Encore ! ”  

Dev i ze s   to  Westm ins te r  Over the Easter weekend, 18 Cranleigh pupils, including Ella Gurdon, Kate 

McGovern and Ellie Sutherland, took on and completed the enormous chal‐

lenge of the Devizes to Westminster – a 4‐day canoe marathon covering 

125 miles.  

Between the three south girls alone, they raised over £3,500 for various 

charities. All of the girls completed the challenge in good spirits, despite 

aches, pains and the odd hospital visit! The Cranleigh girls’ team came first 

in the Junior ladies race, with Ellie Sutherland and her partner coming 4th  

overall. Massive congratulations to the three of them – an amazing achieve‐

ment. 

Back in November Rev Parker gave his annual 

invitation to any interested members of the 

school community to embark on a Christianity 

Explore & Confirmation course that would run 

through the Michaelmas, Lent and Summer 

Terms in preparation for the Confirmation 

service in May. Sophie Paglierani, Kitty Cahill, 

Anna Carter, Katie Robinson, Livi Hartley and 

Tori Parker joined the course with several 

other students from each House. The actual 

weekly sessions were led by the Chaplain, with 

students split into 3 smaller discussion groups. 

Mrs Frett, Mr Cooke and Miss Sturdee fielded 

lots of challenging and gritty questions, from 

topics such as ‘sin’, ‘prayer’, ‘heaven and hell’, 

and what it meant to be a Christian. The 

course finale was an ‘Away Day’, with two 

short talks and a trip out to go bowling and a 

visit to Burger King. All the candidates were 

then confirmed in a lovely service in Chapel, 

supported by family and friends, and with a 

special dinner afterwards.
