Congratulations to 8th grader, Adam Ru-sak. In May, Adam repre-sented our school and the state of Maryland at the National Geographic Bee competition in Washington, D.C. At the state com-petition, Adam was se-lected as the winner from among 102 partici-pants who represented their schools from all over Maryland. Last year, Adam was a runner up. As a result of this year’s success, Adam has done many TV and Newspaper interviews! He told reporters that he studied as much as three hours a day to prepare for the bee and has loved geography ever since he was 4, “when I received my first map of the Unit-ed States. It’s also the

year I memorized all the state capitals.” Adam also wants to be a me-teorologist when he grows up because “I’m really interested in look-ing at weather, espe-cially storms.” At the televised national competition, Adam made it to the Top 10! In the final round, Adam received 10th place. Awesome job Adam!!

Turf Time! By RANAGA TAN

Aren’t you sick of

that bumpy grass field?

Don’t cry, the state of

Maryland will kindly

give us $750,000 for a

new 60 x 120 yard artifi-

cial outdoor turf to cov-

er the soccer/lacrosse

field at the Lakelands

Park site.

Even better, we’ll

start a trend! It will be

the first artificial out-

door turf field owned by

the City of Gaithersburg.

We don’t know when

we’ll receive it, but it will

be soon. At least you can

count on having a less

muddy gym class!

Mr. Earley is the awesome counselor for 8th grade. Many students often go to Mr. Earley when they have a prob-lem and he always finds a solution. Some people know that Mr. Earley has a motorcycle and rides it to school sometimes, but we wanted to know a few more fun things about his background, so we asked him the following ques-tions:

1) What’s your favorite flavor of Kool Aid? Red.

2) What is your favorite

kind of pizza? Extra cheese.

3) How long have you been a school counselor? 15 years.

4) How long have you worked with MCPS? 12 years.

5) What do you like about your job? The opportunity to see kids learn and grow.

6) What was your favorite subject when you were in school? Law in college.

7) What did you want to do when you were a kid? Professional athlete, busi-

ness man, cop, or secret agent.

8) What is something that most students don’t

know about you? I’m a superhero and being a counselor is my secret identity.

We gathered in the gym to view a slideshow, see the poster winners, and to listen to “Ms. Stacy” and her great speech. Then, students, staff, and some of Mr. Bittner’s family walked around the school. Drummers kept the beat and bubbles

were handed out! Con-gratulations Aubrey Moe for winning the “Bittner spirit” contest! We will be naming the gymnasium after Mr. Bittner sometime next year. That way, Mr. Bittner will always be in our gym… and our heart.

dance. The simplicity of the dance is what made it stand out. The dance started with moves that took their time, flowing slowly from step to leap, and changed to bold, sweeping move-ments as everyone on the stage joined the dance, which had a very nice overall effect.

Then there was the acting. The cast was definitely well chosen. Both lead actors were fantastic (Abbey Coakley, playing Ti Moune and Michael Par-ness, playing Daniel Beauxhomme). A few other actors that stood out were McKenzie McMahon (Mama Eur-alie), Edward Wu (Tonton Julian), Eliana Noznesky (Andrea), Alex Chase, (Daniel’s father), Jack Beautz, (Agwe the god of oceans), and Sam Arabia (Papa Ge the god of death).

It was also the little things that made the show. In the play, Tonton Julian (Edward Wu) had gone to where the rich people lived, and the gatekeeper (Tyler Anderla) slapped Tonton Julian which sounded and looked so real that many people in the audience jump. Al-so, whenever Papa Ge (Sam Arabia) came onto the stage, there would be a blast of smoke from behind a set piece.

The set was also impressive. It could completely change by adding a few props and turning a few pieces of the set. That credit goes to the crew. There are too many on crew to name, but crew is an extremely big role. Eve-rybody did a fantastic job at getting the play to run smoothly.

Over the course of the play, Ti Moune fell in love with Daniel Beauxhomme, offering her life to Papa Ge in order to let Daniel live. Papa Ge made a deal with Ti Moune; if she could marry Daniel, proving love was stronger than death, then he would let her keep her life. Then it was revealed that Dan-iel was already engaged

to his childhood friend Andrea.

The ending was one that I did not ex-pect; instead of killing Ti Moune, the gods transformed her into a tree. To transform the actress into a tree, she was swiftly lifted onto a ladder, where she put her arms through a long brown cloth and took hold of fake branches. As a tree, Ti Moune broke the gate separat-ing the rich people from the poor people, and Ti Moune was able to watch over Daniel and his family. I was com-pletely taken by sur-prise by the twist in the plot, but I absolutely loved watching it.

At the end, there was thunderous ap-plause. “Once on This Island Jr.” was one of the best plays I have seen this school per-form, and whoever did not go to see it missed out on an incredible ex-perience.

which was then followed by a song.

From the first song, “We Dance,” I knew that the cast included some very talented singers. Oliv-ia Pritchard (who played Asaka, the goddess of earth) and Daniela Casas (who played Erzulie, the goddess of love) were both very impressive. Many of the songs and singers were incredible, and I was amazed with the music portion of the play.

During each musi-cal number, there was some form of dance, rang-ing from a simple back and forth swaying to intricate movements. The dance was well choreographed. One actor that really stood out during dances was Mi-chael Parness, who played the male lead Daniel Beauxhomme. In the be-ginning of the play, Mi-chael came out and spun across the stage.

Another dance that stood out was Ti Moune’s

Got winners? Well, the LPMS soccer teams do! We wanted to ask the amazing coaches how they accom-plished this epic achievement with their teams. Here’s what they said.

1. What do you think led to your undefeated sea-son?

Coach Keiller (Boys’ coach): It was a great season this year. In my 7 years as coach at LPMS, this was one of the most complete teams I have ever had.

Coach Tiedemann (Girls’ coach): We were undefeated this year because the girls came to practice every day focused and ready to work. They were able to put whatever happened that day behind them, and con-centrate on playing together as a team.

2. How would you summarize your feelings about this season?

Coach Keiller: To sum up my feelings for this season is relieved. There were quite a few games this season that were close in score.

Coach Tiedemann: This season was a season to re-member. We had a lot of laughs and fun! I look for-ward to seeing the returning 7th graders next year. I also look forward to hearing about all the great things the 8th graders will be doing in high school.

3. What are you most proud of?

Coach Keiller: The way they played together as a team! Everyone contributed to this undefeated season.

Coach Tiedemann: I am most proud of the games that we won in overtime this year. The girls showed they had the desire to win. Even if we didn't play our best game overall, we pushed through at the end when it counted. It showed me how much heart these girls played with. As a coach, that is the most important thing you ask of your players....to play with heart.

4. What would you say to any students who would like to try out next year?

Coach Keiller: As a coach, I ask my players to play with heart and have fun.

Coach Tiedemann: Every year is a different year. A positive attitude and strong desire to play for LPMS goes a long way. We have a winning tradition that we plan on continuing. Come to tryouts fit and ready to play!

Can You Hear the Beat? Band Receives Top Marks! By RIHANA STEVENSON

At Linganore High School, our advanced band accomplished the greatest honor at the state band fes-tival! They earned all ones on their “score” cards for their performance.

A “one” is the highest grade possible for the band to receive. One of the judges commented on the band by saying, “From the beginning the students presented

a very positive image, they were focused, disciplined, and responsive.” No wonder the judges felt that way about our school band. Our band teacher, Mr. Lopez, helps students in his class to gain confidence in our-selves and our musical abilities. The band classes work together as a team with great teacher who has helped them gain respect for all kinds of music. Great job accomplishing “Superior” ratings at the state band festival!

Dressing up a basic T-shirt is easy. All you need is a few necklaces, a pop of color, or a sheer cover-up. Use these tricks to update your style this summer.

This summer it’s all about pastel shades and light materials. When accessorizing your outfits you have to think about mix-matching. You can mix-match the colors of your shirts with the shades that would go the best. You don’t want to put on too much and make yourself hot, so you have to find a thin but fitting tee.

How-To Accessorize a Summer Tee! By RIHANA STEVENSON Put in splashes of color. Go for colorful clothes, but get colors that look good on you. Play around with reds and yel-lows and blues. Never make the mistake of buying some-thing that is in fashion, but does not suit you. Chances are, you’ll look bad and the purchase will be so not worth it. Remember that your fash-ion should complement your look and your personality.

Accessorize all your outfits with lots of attitude. Think about what kind of shoes, hair accessories, jewel-ry, or belts that would go with

what you’re wearing. Wear your clothes with panache (confidence) and your style will show right through!

Go for a look that suits you and your image. Your clothes should reflect your own personal style. Accesso-rize well to look really great!

Q: I’m so tired of fake people. How do you deal with them?

A: What do you mean by fake? If someone “fake” is bothering you, ignore them because they are not worth your time.

Q: I’m feeling totally overwhelmed with homework and I feel like I don’t have fun or hang out with my friends. What can I do?

A: The best thing to do is get your homework done before you do anything else. That way, you have the rest of the day to hang out with friends.

Q: I recently moved to the United States. I was really excited to come here, but some students make fun of my accent. How can I get people to be nicer to me and make more friends?

A: The thing about mak-ing more friends is you just need to find other people who have the same interests and atti-tudes as you. Once you find people like that, you’ve found friends. To make people be nicer to you, you have to be nice to them, and they’ll real-ize it’s not worth it to be rude.

Q: The student who sits next to me keeps trying to copy my work. How can I get her to stop without telling the teacher and getting her in trouble?

A: The best thing to do is tell your teacher. Explain that you don’t want to get Mrs. McCheatyPants in trouble, but you do feel uncomfortable with her copying answers. Your teacher will most likely be cool about you changing your seat. It’ll be easier and better for everyone to sit some-where else.

Q: My friend has been wearing really short

shorts and low cut tops to get the attention of boys. How can I help her understand that she doesn’t need to dress like that?

A: Are you sure she’s wearing it to get boys attention? Maybe that’s just the way she dresses, or feels is comfortable for her. As long as it’s appropriate for school then don’t worry. If it is, however, the reason, you need to tell her that wearing this is not posi-tive. She’s not getting attention for the right reasons. She should want boys to pay atten-tion to her for her per-sonality, not her body.

SHORT STORY THE FALCON FLIER—Page 9

The raven shrieked with victory, pumping its wings, rising several feet. It swung in a broken circle, making the sparrow yelp with fear. The raven might have laughed, but it opened and closed its beak, a harsh light in its eyes. It felt nothing, no pity, no guilt, only the thrill of the hunt. The raven tightened its grip on the sparrow’s wing, shrieking again before opening his wings again, nearly flipping him upside down. As it was propelled back-ward, it threw out its legs, letting go of the sparrow. The tiny bird was launched into the air, unable to fly away due to the wind battling at it from all sides. The raven flipped over com-pletely, swiftly diving the dis-tance to the falling bird. It opened its claws, reaching for the sparrow. The raven opened its beak again, triumphantly cawing as it flapped its wings. It slowed down, flying leisurely, the sparrow grasped lifelessly in its claws. The raven flew away into the night, its talons embed-ded in the tiny neck of the spar-row. This was its kingdom.

its head up, the raven put on a burst of speed, all the determi-nation of it was focused on a faint little sparrow flitting about the trees below. The ra-ven folded its wings against its body, falling without sound. The small form of the sparrow grew closer, unaware of the danger lurking. It was too easy. The raven opened its wings, a whoosh of air sending the sparrow tumbling back. Before the inferior bird could regain a sense of direction, the raven opened its claws, plunging them at the small bird. The tips of the black blades caught the edge of the sparrow’s right wing.

It was silent, the paper thin mist gliding over its dark feath-ers. It was a creature of the night, of death, of darkness. And this was its kingdom. The glowing reflection of the moon sent silver waves pulsing throughout the night sky, catching the bird in the shivers of light, setting it aflame with beauty beyond anything. It opened its beak, letting out an ear-deafening croak: daring, teasing, taunting. The raven’s dark eyes glinted with hunger for blood, for vio-lence, for the joy of feeling their enemies fall beneath its blade-sharp claws. Throwing

Watch Bully: The Documentary By DISHA WAGHODE and BETHANY PFEIFFER

“13 million kids will be bullied in the US this year.” ( http://thebullyproject.com/indexflash.html) “Bully” is a documentary about 5 bullied kids and their families over the school year. In this film, there are two families whose children committed suicide, a 14 year old girl who brought a gun on the bus, and more. This documentary captures how bullying is handled in school. The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) first gave it an R rating, which changed later to PG-13 due to a petition. More people wanted kids to be able to watch it so they could

see how bullying affects kids. Bullying needs to stop. One of the students getting bullied, Alex Libby, says, “They punch me in the jaw, strangle me, they knock things out of my hand, take things from me, sit on me. They push me so far that I want to become the bully.” It is so sad that someone feels like that. Watch “Bully” and be-come more aware of what bullying can do.
