TQ Winding and Curing Experience

• TQ coil manufacturing has been very successful to date. LBNL and FNAL have collaborated on their completion, with technicians from both labs present throughout the fabrication process.

• 4 practice coils, 4 coils for TQS01 and 2 coils for TQC01 have been wound and cured. Of these 10 coils, 8 have been reacted and 6 impregnated. The final two TQC01 coils and two spare coils for the initial quadrupoles will be competed soon.

• Complete coil fabrication procedures (travelers) are written and incorporated into the fabrication process.

Requirements for first test:

1. dewar volume to accommodate magnet

2. 100 amp power supply with extraction circuit

3. Magnetic Measurement-ready

4. Superfluid-ready preferred

• This review is for the LQ winding and curing tooling. It also includes a review of the coil end parts.

• Successful completion of this review will mark the beginning of detailed part drawings to be made from the completed solid model.

• The tooling design addresses concerns about possible misalignment of the inner and outer coils during fabrication. Although misalignment has not been confirmed at this time, alignment features have been incorporated nonetheless.

• Alignment using shoulder bolts can be maintained throughout the coil winding and curing fabrication process.

• Winding and curing tooling for LARP’s long quadrupole (LQ) is based on TQ tooling which uses some of the LHC IR Quad’s model magnet tooling.

• The 6 m LHC curing mold will be used for the long quad.

• The LQ coil length is 3.34 m and has a laminated mandrel made of 2” EDM blocks.

• The mandrel has a tight toleranced longitudinal slot (0.250” +/- 0.001”) used by the two shoulder bolts of each pole piece.

• Shoulder bolts are used to center the coil poles pieces in the winding mandrel’s longitudinal axis.

• One of the two alignment features of each pole piece will be slotted hole in the longitudinal direction to accommodate manufacturing tolerances.

LQ End Part Review April 9, 2007F. Nobrega

Fermilab performs both mechanical and magnetic analysis of coil ends. Mechanical analysis is done with programs developed at Fermilab and refined on the High Field Dipole base program. These programs are then used to create the end part surfaces.

Accurate, fast and reasonably priced manufacturing techniques for metal parts (water-jet technique) were developedin the high field base program and are used for the end parts on the TQ models.

4. Superfluid-ready preferred

Summary

• The LQ end parts are from the TQ design.

• The TQ end part design is satisfactory for the LQ.
