    The President’s Letter de W5DNT

    Greetings to all LSDXA members!

Hopefully, this newsletter will find you well and having a great summer, with at least some DXing sandwiched

between travel, cookouts and all the other summer fun. For many of us, the summer has brought some fantastic 6

meter openings to Europe and the Caribbean. These openings certainly reinforce the “magic” of six meters.

Summer is also a good time to be thinking about antenna projects, particularly 160 meter antenna systems, either

transmit or receive. It won’t be that long now until the nights get longer and cooler, and the “top band” starts to

    heat back up!

Cycle 24 just can’t seem to take off, however there is still DX to be worked. After weeks of solar flux in the 70’s,

recently flux numbers have been up into the mid 80’s. That is at least encouraging. Hopefully as the weather cools

down we will begin to see activity on 15, 12 and 10 meters.

Ham Com was certainly enjoyed by all this year. From an LSDXA perspective, the DX Dinner was a real success.

Tom Harrell, N4XP, provided an excellent after dinner presentation on the “K4M” DXpedition to Midway Island.

The food was good and a number of nice door prizes were won by attendees. Besides just an enjoyable evening,

LSDXA was able to net about $XXX from the dinner, which will be put directly into DXpedition funding. Special

thanks go to Rick Barnett, NØRB, who coordinated facility and catering arrangements for this year’s DX Dinner,

Dave Jaska, WØVX, who served as master of ceremonies and Tim Pearson, K5AC, who arranged for the door prizes. Pete Hicks, N5KD, did a great job keeping the web site up to date for Ham Com.

During the DX Forum, excellent presentations were provided by Dave Jaska WØVX, San Hudson K5YY, Tom

Harrell N4XP and John Devoldere ON4UN. Mike Krzystyniak, K9MK, and company did a great job checking

QSL cards. Thanks to this year’s team of card checking volunteers, who processed 45 applications. Special thanks

to Carl Luetzelschwab, K9LA, for representing the ARRL DXCC desk and his wife Vicky Luetzelschwab,

AE9YL, for making the trip from W9 land and supporting our award checking efforts. The LSDXA Board of

Directors would like to thank all of the many individuals that worked so hard to make Ham Com 2010 a success

    for LSDXA and its members!

As you know, LSDXA’s primary mission is to provide financial support for DXpeditions, without which our

hobby would be a lot less exciting. To achieve our mission requires money, a subject we generally do not like to

talk about. Over the past couple of years, about 100 members have not renewed their LSDXA membership. In a few cases, some may have dropped out of the hobby altogether. In many cases, however, folks may have simply

forgotten to renew or not had a convenient opportunity to renew such as at Ham Com. To help address this, Jerry

Karlovich, KD5OM, our Secretary Treasurer, has worked with Pay Pal to provide yet another way for new folks to

join and members to renew. Jerry and Pete will be adding a link to our web site, www.dxer.org , and sending out

an email regarding membership renewals. Our dues are the primary source of funds that allow us to support

DXpeditions. One benefit of being an LSDXA member you may not be aware of is that with some of the

DXpeditions we support, LSDXA member QSOs are downloaded into LOTW as a donor benefit. We hope that if

you have not yet renewed, you will take a moment and do so. Dues are essential for our ongoing success!

In 2010, LSDXA has already supported:

    3D2CR Conway Reef 3CØ Annobon 3W6C K4M Midway Island : YI9PSE Iraq/Kurdistan T31X Canton Isl etc TX3A Chesterfield Isl CYØ Sable Isl.

The Jan/Feb 2011 VP8O trip to South Orkney Island is a very high cost ($300,000) effort to activate this #12 most

wanted DXCC entity. We are happy to report that LSDXA has made a $1,000 contribution to this effort.

We hope to see you at the September 18th meeting. If you have any input or suggestions for the LSDXA Board to

consider, we would love to hear from you. For now, good DXing!

    73, Dan [email protected]

    DxPeditions: Sable Island October 2010

At the last meeting our speaker was Randy, NØTG who briefed us on plans for the Sable Island DXpedition this

October. The other day he provided an update:

It seems like a long time, but, finally we are beginning to really sense that the reality of the Dxpedition is nearing

quickly. Initial shipping to Nova Scotia has begun to our take-off point, including The Battle Creek Special and

other items. Operations are on track for Oct 22-31. QSL ALL callsigns via NØTG or the ONLINE QSL Request

Service. Reference our web site for details and updates.

Looking forward to working all. www.CY0dxpedition. com 73, Randy - CYØ/NØTG

    2010 W5DXCC DX Dinner

I was going to attempt a summary of HamCom and the DX Dinner but Webmaster Pete N5KD is far ahead

of me on that one so I’ll just point you all in his direction for a good summary and link to many photos of

both the dinner and HamCom in general from Sec/Treas. Jerry KD5OM

International Exhibition for Radio Amateurs Friedrichshafen, Germany 2010

The 34th Ham Radio Show was held last June with approximately 17,500 attendees, making it the largest show in

Europe and of a size comparable to Daytom Hamvention in recent years.

In sharp contrast to HARA Arena, this show is held in a large modern facility with covered fleamarket space and

the town itself is in a pretty setting on Lake Constance with Switzerland a short boat ride away. Friedrichshafen is

also home of the Zeppelin to this day.

Rick NØRB was fortunate to attend this year’s show and a few of his photos follow.

    Dayton DX Dinner 2011

Southwest Ohio DX Association (SWODXA) is happy to announce plans for the 26th annual DX Dinner™. This

dinner, which is held in conjunction with Dayton Hamvention®, will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011.

Because we realize many attendees make their plans well in advance, we want to let you know that our location

for the dinner has changed. It will be at the Dayton Marriott located at 1414 S. Patterson Blvd., Dayton, OH

    45409.

We are excited about our new venue. While it is less than five minutes from our previous location, it has a much

larger capacity, has been recently renovated, and we will have a new menu selection. Other advantages are that

there are no steps as the dinner will be held on the ground floor, and there is ample, free, on-site parking. In our

planning meetings, the staff has been very receptive and is anxious to meet the needs of our attendees and gra-

    ciously welcomes SWODXA.

When tickets become available, more information regarding the dinner will be posted on our website
