As we have now entered into our New Liturgical Year B,
Our gospel passages will be primarily taken from the Gospel of Mark. This Sunday’s gospel seems to be a
continuation of last week as Jesus began to call his first disciples. Our gospel today is filled with a sense of Urgency! John has been arrested. Jesus is now urgently on the move, getting coworkers to join him, in his saving mission. As we begin this new year we are being challenged to respond to Jesus with a sense of Urgency. “Repent” and “Believe” in the Good News .
The repentance spoken of today is telling us what is required to be a true follower or disciple of Jesus. We are being asked to “turn away” from our own wants and “turn towards” the needs of others with a change of heart and perspective. The scripture passages we hear at mass are not simply words to hear proclaimed and then to be easily forgotten. The scripture passages we hear are to be listened to so deeply, that they make a real difference in our daily lives. We are being asked to make gentle lifestyle changes where necessary , as we try to live the gospel. Perhaps we could try to listen to others without allowing our minds to wander.
As I visited our school children before the pandemic I gave them a challenge. I asked them to try to live out their entire day by only speaking positive thoughts and words, and not mentioning anything negative. It is not an easy task to do, but as Catholics, may we try to always be positive, bringing the “Peace of Christ” to others. Pray that as God sees our daily acts of Faith, Hope and Charity, this pandemic, will soon cease, to be among us .
God Bless.
Deacon John
Celebrating the Sunday of the Word of God
The Sunday of the Word of God was instituted by Pope Francis with the Apostolic Letter, Motu proprio “Aperuit illis” issued on September 30, 2019. This clarion call by the Pope to celebrate the word of God on every third Sunday of Ordinary Time is to remind ourselves to get acquainted with the Lord in the Scriptures to enhance our dedication to the Christian life’. Though at the liturgical celebrations every Sunday readings are taken from the holy scripture, “the Pope intended it to be a day dedicated to the celebration, reflection and dissemination of the Word”. Today’s celebration of the word, will make us appreciate the gift of the knowledge of our salvation in our Lord Jesus Christ. We shall embrace our responsibility as followers of Christ to know the demands of our master. Thereby putting aside the idea that the scriptures are meant to be studied by the Priests and interpreted for the Parishioners. Everyone is expected to own a copy of the bible and spend time to reflect on the inspired words of God and begin to live out the Gospel values everyday.
According to Cardinal Robert Sarah, “the Sunday of the Word of God is a means to help people reawaken an awareness of the importance of Sacred Scripture for our lives as believers, beginning with its resonance in the liturgy which places us in living and permanent dialogue with God”. When God speaks to us, we have an obligation to listen to him in order to fulfil his desire for us. Therefore, everyone of us responsible for the proclamation of the word: Priests, Deacons and Lectors, are reminded of “specific interior and exterior preparation, familiarity with the text to be proclaimed and the necessary practice in the way of proclaiming it clearly, avoiding all improvisation”. At the proclamation of the word, the Spirit of God works on the listeners who reverently dispose themselves to receive God’s message. The more we attune ourselves to his word the more spiritual benefits we gain from it. Let us make efforts in befriending the word of God for enlightenment and strength in our faith. May God send his Spirit to teach us the importance and value of his word in our lives through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Father Augustine
