“Actions speak louder than words”

Ascribed to St. Francis of Assisi “ Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary use words.”

We are bombarded with words each and everyday. We hear campaign speeches, political slogans, activists of all stripes proclaiming their view points – so much noise.

What we often don’t “hear” or “perceive” is the silent witness of the good that is being done by many. Not good being talked about, but good ac-tually being done.

So much talk, so little action.

In our readings from sacred scripture this weekend we hear from the prophet Ezekiel that it is by our actions that we are judged. “ When the wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is lawful and right, they shall save their life….because that person considered and turned away from all the transgres-sions that they had committed, they shall surely live…” We notice the words “turns”, “does” – verbs – action words. There must be a response to God’s call to conversion, not just words but actions.

Our Gospel shows the difference between words and ac-tions. Here in this parable of the evangelist Matthew, two men are approached by their Father,” Son, go and work in the vineyard today”. One says, “I will not” but thinks better of it and goes. The other says, “ I am going sir” but doesn’t. In this little story who did the Fathers will ? The first. Our actions show our will, our intention. The first son says no but changes his mind and “goes” and “works”. He doesn’t talk about work – he does it.

People can profess the Creed, belief in Christ but their ac-tions loudly deny him.

Let us pray that amidst all of the shouting and protesting, all of the turmoil of hurricane and fire and natural disasters that afflict us; the silent threat of the pandemic, that we will be given the grace to “see” and “hear” the silent witness of all the good that is being done in our midst, all around us.

Saint of the Week:

Oct. 1: St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus (1873-1897), also known as the “Little Flower” became a Carmelite nun in Lisieux, France at the age of 15. She called her path of holiness the “Little Way” referring to her belief that every act, no matter how small done with great love brings us closer to God. Thérèse left behind her

autobiography memoir “The Story of a Soul” which has inspired faith in skeptics and strengthened the souls of believers. She said “I will spend my heaven doing good on earth. I will let fall a shower of roses.” St. Thérèse is the patron saint of missions and was declared a Doctor of the Church 1997.

FOLLOW ME

Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John

What does your relationship with Christ look like? Do you see

Jesus as simply a great teacher? A Prophet? A man of great wis-

dom? Or do you see him as more? Jesus calls us to be more than

simply believers—he calls us to be his disciples and friends. Do

you consider yourself a disciple and friend of Christ? The Gospel

of John shows us that God became like us; he became a man so

that we could become like him and grow closer to him. Follow

Me: Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John is your guide to a

personal encounter with Christ.

If you want to know what it means to really follow Christ, and if

you would like to have a deeper relationship with him, then I

invite you to join us for Follow Me, beginning on Wednesday

September 23rd, at 7:30pm at St. Francis Church in the parish

hall. You will not only benefit personally from being part of this

study; you will also help us to grow in fellowship as a parish as we

grow closer to Christ together.

Follow Me invites you to experience the joy of a renewed friend-

ship with Christ. You will learn what it takes to follow him. You

will experience the joy of divine friendship, and you will see how

God—and only God—can satisfy the deepest desires of your heart.

Participants of Follow Me will receive a workbook and will meet

every week to view an engaging video presentation followed by a

time of lively group discussion and fellowship. The eight

30 minute videos, presented by Dr. Edward Sri, will guide you

through the Gospel of John. Dr Sri will explain how Christ’s

encounters with his disciples, the Samaritan woman, the man

born blind, and others, are examples of how he lovingly and

persistently calls each of us to a more intimate and life-changing

relationship with him.

We will begin Follow Me on Wednesday September 23rd

at 7:30pm at St. Francis Xavier Church parish hall. You

will be asked to sign in when you arrive at the hall, sanitize your

hands and you will be seated socially distant. Masks are

strongly recommended. For more information and to register,

see OUR PARISH WEBSITE or register at our parish office. I

hope you can join us. You will love it.

During these challenging days that we live in, wouldn’t it be comforting to experience less anxiety and a greater sense of peace? In order to achieve a greater sense of peace we need to look deeper into the relationship we have with Jesus: to get

to know Him more, and ourselves. You can do this through the “Rediscover Your Faith” series which will present the

Truths of the Catholic Faith as well as an enlightening approach to enhance your relationship with Jesus. Please join us in a safe environment on Thursday beginning October

1st at 7:00 pm in the hall at St. Francis Xavier Parish. (Masks are mandatory)

***Please note date change above***
