DUAL LINECentralized Greasing System

PrefaceLubricating appropriately without spending human labor is

becoming an important issue for lubrication in recent years. The

advancements of machines and devices are making the structure

more and more complicated, increasing the lubricating points,

and its operation is becoming high speed, along with advancing

toward automation. Therefore, instead of performing manual

lubrication which associates with many labor and dangers, high-

level lubrication management that will lubricate appropriate amount

of grease to appropriate points periodically is becoming necessary.

What answers to this is the IHI centralized greasing system.

IHI centralized greasing system has been manufactured since 1939,

contributing to the automation of greasing mounted at the rolling

plants.

It has been marketed as an individual product from 1946, and it

is used in various industrial machines, transportation machines,

chemical machines, construction machines, water turbines, etc.,

achieving good reputations.

IHI, who has the longest history and superb technologies as a

centralized greasing system manufacturer, recommends the

adoption of this equipments with a full responsibility.

Outline

Features

OperationGrease that is pushed out of the pump will pass through the main pipe via the switching valve reaching the distributor, pushing the pilot piston of the distributor. This will open the passage to the main piston, and grease will push down the main piston. At this point, the grease that was pooled at the bottom side of the main piston from the previous lubrication will be pushed out to the lubricating point

through the branch pipe. Next lubrication will be performed in the opposite procedure of this time by switching the switching valve. Amount of lubricant is adjusted by the stroke of the main piston by the adjustment screw on the distributor. Also, lubrication can be confi rmed from outside by the indicating rod.

Its major structure is pumps, distributors, and pipes. FIG. 1 shows these structures and the principle of the operation of lubrication, which is a simple structure and an assured measurement and distribution function.

There are following merits using the IHI centralized greasing system. (1) Labor-saving for lubrication

Labor-saving for lubrication can be achieved by shifting to the centralized greasing from the manual greasing.

(2) Down time for lubrication is not necessary

Appropriate lubrication can be performed while the machine is operating by automating the lubrication.

(3) Preventing dangers

There will be no need to approach the lubricating points, preventing the accidents accompanying lubrication.

(4) Preventing missed lubrication

There will be no missed lubrication by the negligence by mechanizing the lubrication.

(5) Appropriate amount of lubrication

Appropriate amount of lubrication is performed by the distributor, preventing excess or defi ciency of lubrication and waste of grease.

(6) Saving power

Power of the machine can be saved by appropriate lubrication.

(7) Prevent foreign objects mixing into grease

Grease is not exposed to the atmosphere, so there is no degradation or mixture of foreign object, allowing clean grease to be supplied

constantly.

(8) Extended life of bearings

Lubrication is performed appropriately and securely, so the life of the bearing is extended signifi cantly, reducing the replacement fee and

labor, and enhancing the operation rate of the machine.

As you see, lubrication system will pay off itself in a short time by the reduction in the labor and power, saving of grease, extension of the life of bearings, and enhancement of operation rate. It is also an effective device from the operation management, safety management, and quality control points of view.

IHI centralized greasing system can be applied to following machines.

Various rolling facilities, iron manufacturing and casting machines including its ancillary facilities, press / crane / conveyer and its ancillary facilities, chemical industry machines, mining machines, paper manufacturing machines, machining tools, construction machines, textile machines, rubber and vinyl processing facilities, and other industrial machines.

IHI centralized greasing system is classifi ed by the drive method and piping method, and lubricating pump and distributor are standardized in accordance with the capacity. Outline of these are shown in the table below.

Manual Greasing SystemThis is the most simple and lowest cost lubricating device. This device is constructed with a grease reservoir, manual switching valve, manual lubricating pump with a pressure gauge, two main pipes connected to this, and distributors matching the lubricating points. Manual greasing system is used at the departments with maintenance personnel, and it is most appropriate for various cranes, water turbines, industrial furnaces, paper manufacturing machines, and other industrial machines.

This device is an automatic greasing system that combines a motor-driven lubricating pump with a controller, and main pipe is a loop type that comes out of the pump and returns to the pump. Pump has a grease reservoir, motor, reduction gears, hydraulic change over valve, pressure gauge, and relief valve on the common base, with microswitches checking the lowering of the grease level and completion of the lubrication. Distributors matching the lubricating points are connected to the main pipe, and the fi xed amount of grease is performed by the pump. With this method, the pump will be operated automatically according to the time intervals set by the controller, and the pump will be stopped and accident will be displayed when there is a problem with the operation. Since the main pipe is installed drawing a loop, it is used often when the lubricating points are relatively gathered in one location (rolling stands, leveling machine, water turbine, etc.).

Motor-driven Loop Type Greasing System

Motor-driven Loop End Type Greasing SystemThis device is an automatic greasing system that combines a motor-driven lubricating pump with a controller, and main pipe is a loop end type (short loop type) that does not have a return pipe. Structure and usage of this device is same as the motor-driven loop type (hydraulic change over valve is a loop end type), but the piping method is appropriate for relatively small facilities.

Motor-driven End Type Greasing SystemThis device is an automatic greasing system that combines a motor-driven lubricating pump with a controller, and main pipe is an end type that comes out of the pump and ends at the pressure adjustment valve. Pump has grease reservoir, motor, reduction gears, solenoid valve, pressure gauge, and relief valve on the common base, with microswitch checking the lowering of the grease level. Distributors matching the lubricating points are connected to main pipe, and constant amount of greasing is performed by the pump. Also, a pressure adjustment valve is mounted at the end of main pipe, checking the completion of lubrication. With this method, the pump will be operated automatically according to the time intervals set by the controller, and the pump will be stopped and accident will be displayed when there is a problem with the operation. Since the main pipe is installed as a dead end coming out from the pump and mounting the pressure adjustment valve at the end, the end type is used often when the lubricating points are relatively aligned in a line for long distance (rolling table line, etc.).

Direct Type Greasing SystemSince the direct pump (motor-driven lubricating pump) used with this device is set directly on the commercially available pail can as its reservoir, there is no need of fi lling using pump. It is also equipped with a lift, so the replacement of the pail can is done easily. Piping method is the loop end type (short loop type) that does not have a return pipe.

Either steel pipes or copper pipes are used as the piping depending on the scale of the device and installation location, and a rubber hose is used for the moving parts. Polyethylene tubes can also be used as the grease supply pipe.

Consider the following when selecting the pump model.

1. Type of the lubricant (grease, oil) Structure of the reservoir is different for grease or oil. Use the appropriate one for centralized lubrication of NLGI Specifi cation No. 00 to 1 for grease.

2. Discharge pressureIt is possible to lubricate to a wider range with a narrow pipe using the 20.6 MPa specifi cation lubricating pump.

3. Discharge capacityIt is possible to perform fast and easy lubrication using a lubricating pump with large discharge amount due to less handle operation.

4. Reservoir capacityCalculate the grease consumption from the number of lubricating ports and lubricating frequency, and select the lubricating pump with reservoir capacity for appropriate fi lling period.

5. Reservoir material Remaining amount of grease can be seen from outside with the plastic reservoir, and has a merit such as small and light. And when a cover is necessary, it uses smaller cover than the steel reservoir. However, it is not appropriate to use at the location that may be damaged by object hitting it or at the location with high temperature.

6. Mounting location Use this lubricating pump indoors. When using this outdoors, place it inside a cover so it is not exposed to rain water, or use the simplifi ed outdoors specifi cation with a level rod case mounted on the reservoir.

7. OtherDifferent name plate language (standard is Japanese and English adscript) and color of paint (standard is Munsell code 2.5G6/3) for exporting will be an option. M10 x 40L bolt, nut, and spring washer are attached.

Structure of the Motor-driven Greasing Pump

(1) Motor-driven greasing pump is constructed from motor, reducer, lubricating pump, grease reservoir, and switch valve, and they are mounted on a base. The loop type uses hydraulic, and the end type uses electromagnetic for the switch valve.

(2) Pump drive is the plunger method, and the EPA model uses the double plunger method which has an exceptional reliability and past records. Pumps have a specifi ed rotational direction, but even if it is rotated in reverse during the test run or something, pump is prevented from damage with the unique structure. EP model is a single plunger twin method, using highly reliable check valve, and pump can be rotated in either direction.

(3) There is a fi lter on the lubricant fi lling port of all the models, preventing contamination by foreign objects.

(4) Switching pressure for the hydraulic switch value mounted on the pump for loop type can be adjusted between 3.9 and 20.6 MPa. Pressure of main pipe can be set higher depending on the device, making the lubrication more secure. It is also possible to design a piping for layered (master, secondary, third) distributor method.

(5) The grease reservoir has a follower plate with a level rod, structured to know the capacity of the grease.

(6) FIG. 8 and FIG. 9 (Page 9) are pump circuit diagrams of the basic loop type and end type.

• Adopted the common hydraulic switch valve for loop type and end type so you can select the piping method most reasonable for your machines.

When Using with Loop End Type (Short Loop Type) (EP-11L, EPA-25L, 4L Models)

This is delivered as the loop piping method. To use it with the end piping, modify the hydraulic switch va l ve as fo l l ows be fo re piping. (1) After removing the R1/8

plug ① at the both sides, remove the shorting screw cap ② and the seal ③ using a fl athead screwdriver, and then reattach the plug ①.

(2) Then attach R3/8 plug ④ (prepare separately) to the external piping connection port (Ⓐ or Ⓑ).

(3) Readjust the switching pressure to the pressure higher than that is applied when distributors will operate.

Electrical Wiring Diagram (EP-11L-C Model)

(1) The pump can be operated just by connecting the power supply since all the internal wirings are connected for the EP-11L-C model with electrical controller.

(2) Operation will automatically startup every time when it becomes the time specifi ed by the timer, and automatically stop when it fi nishes lubricating. It can also be started manually.

(3) When the abnormal alarm “Lubricating time extension,” “Reservoir empty,” or “Motor overload” occurs, the lamp will light up and the pump will stop.

Pressure cotrol valve is used to stop the motor-driven pump and output switching signal for the electromagnetic switch valve of the pump when the grease pressure of main pipe has reached the pressure setup on the pressure control valve for the greasing system that use the end type motor-driven greasing pump. In general, one will be installed around the end of the main pipe. (Refer to FIG. 5 and FIG. 17) Pressure control valve is constructed with the switching mechanism and limit switch that is linked to the piston that operates by hydraulic, and switching pressure can be setup by the adjusting screw.

Distributor is a valve that will discharge constant amount of the grease that is sent via piping from the lubricating pump to each lubrication point, and model is defi ned by the number of lubricating points, amount of lubrication for each lubrication, and operating method of lubrication. VS model and VW model distributors are using the method where lubricating pistons operate in parallel, operation indicator rod is mounted per each lubricating piston, and amount of lubricant can be adjusted in a specifi c range. KX model distributor is using the progressive method where lubricating piston moves in order of sequence, operation indicator rod is attached on the last piston for each distributor unit, and it will lubricate in a fi xed amount. Either distributors are using the measured discharge mechanism not using springs or similar, so they are distributors with high durability and reliability.

Operation of the Dual Line DistributorOperation

① High pressure grease fl ows in from the grease supply main pipe. ② The pilot piston will move to this position. ③ Grease is pooled in this chamber from the previous operation.

① Grease will go into the main chamber through this hole. ② Main piston will go down due to the grease pressure. ③ Grease inside the main chamber is pushed out. ④ Grease will be discharged to the bearing though this hole.

Discharge will continue until the movement of the piston is stopped.

Precautions of Handling1. Maximum operating pressure is 20.6 MPa. It will be 9.8 MPa or lower when used for oil. 2. Operating temperature range is -20ºC to +70ºC. Inquire when you need to use out of this range. 3. Operating pressure is 1 MPa or lower. 4. Adjustment of the amount of discharge is done by the adjustment screw inside the indicating rod case. Amount of discharge will become

lower when the stroke of the main piston is reduced by tightening it. Fix the screws using a lock screw after the adjustment. 5. Attach the protection cover against outdoors, dusts, radiation heat, etc. 6. Operation of the SUS VWS model distributor is same as the VW model. However, the shorting plug for upper and lower port is attached on all

discharge ports.

KX model distributor is a progressive type fi xed amount distributor that will operate the internal pistons progressively with hydraulic. This distributor is used as a secondary distributor for the progressive series lubrication method, and it is also a distributor suitable for commercially available greasing gun or centralized lubrication for 4 to 10 bearings using a small lubrication pump (SKA-214 model: Refer to IHI Auto Greastar catalog). For the structure, refer to the above drawing.

Spray valve is a valve to spray an appropriate amount of grease or oil evenly to the gears, face of tooth of racks, wires, chains, and sliding surfaces of machines using the compressed air by combining centralized greasing system with an air supply line. There are two types of spray valves, SN-O model valve that will spray a fi xed amount of grease or oil discharged from the distributor by opening the air line, and SN-2 model valve that will spray the lubricant with the compressed air by the operation of air electromagnetic valve mounted externally during the lubrication operation of the distributor. Also, there are two types of spray patterns, vertical and horizontal.

Note 1. Above air consumption is the atmospheric pressure conversion value for 0.4 MPa. 2. Relationship between the nozzle direction and spray pattern will be crossed. 3. Use grease with consistency of NLGI. No. 00 to No. 1 (ASTM #430 to 310). Grease

with high viscosity cannot be sprayed suffi ciently. 4. Set the distance between the nozzle and spray area to 100 to 400 mm. 5. Mount an air fi lter and decompression valve on the air supply pipe, and adjust the

pressure to 0.3 to 0.5 MPa. Spray particles of the grease become larger when the air pressure is low.

6. SN-2B, 2H model spray valves do not have a built-in air valve, so mount the electromagnetic valve separately.

7. Timing of grease and air spray on SN-0 model is adjusted with the air valve itself. Readjustment of the air valve may be necessary depending on the brand of the grease or length of the pipes.

8. When spraying to a wide gear, multiple spray valves are necessary. In general, distributor and spray valve are mounted on a panel, creating a spray panel set.

9. SN-0H (RK719000) is a built to order product.

Grease fi lling pump is a pump to transfer lubricant from the 16 kg can or drum can to the reservoir for the lubricating pump. By using this fi lling pump, fi lling operation becomes simplifi ed and it prevents contamination of grease by air or dirt, so be sure to use this fi lling pump when supplying grease into the reservoir of the lubricating pump.
