Dear Lucile Erwin Parents and Guardians, This has been a wonderful semester at Lucile Erwin Middle School. As we continue through the holiday season, I reflect on how much of a gift it is to work here with such a wonderful staff, and for our wonderful students and families. This has been a great year so far. I have recently brought a focus group of students at each grade level to give me feedback on their impressions of Lucile Erwin Middle School (what we are doing well, and what improvements we can do to make us even better). From this feedback and feedback from the staff, we will develop action items on which we can work. I received great information from all grade levels and look forward to taking action on this (and staff’s) feedback. Please remember the following: 1. Parent drop off and pickup is on the SOUTH side of the building ONLY. It is dangerous to our students for our parents to drive among the busses. Please refrain from pickup and drop off in the bus lanes (WEST SIDE of the building). 2. Winter Break starts at the end of the day on December 21. Please have your students reach out to teachers if you and your families have plans to leave before this date. Our first day back from Winter Break will be January 9, 2017. Plugged In

Having multiple conversations with your child about what they are encountering online is necessary

Parents consider using the UKnowKids app as bridge toward independence It gives parents peace of mind on what internet sights your child is on Encouraging them to establish their own boundaries will help empower them and keep them from getting lost online The app allows kids to self-manage their social

media use while delivering regular reports to parents

Have you been wondering how to keep up with your childs use of technology Why not share about your own media use and let your child know that their use of technology is something that you want and need to hear about Ask them to walk you through their games and apps ask how they work

Remind you child that the internet is not private information and viewing habits are most likely being tracked which could lead to unwanted attention Take a look at website httpwwwdigitaltrendscomsocial-mediafake-news-and-filter-bubbles to understand how tracking effects what we gain access to

Remember stay connected by keeping the conversation going

Seventh Grade ELD

Seventh grade ELD (English Language Development) students concluded their unit on bilingualism in November The final project in the unit was to use all of the research to write an op-ed piece Originally we intended to print one op-ed selected by Mr Ridder in its entirety in the school newsletter Mr Ridder couldnrsquot choose just one though It was evident that each student had worked hard to compose their op-ed and each had a unique perspective Therefore it was decided that the four students would each

choose their favorite paragraph and have it printed Enjoy these op-ed excerpts on the benefits of bilingualism -Ms Corrigan

ldquoMy opinion on bilingual people is it helps them get a good job That helps lots people by going to your work and you knowing their language For example my mom sometimes has a lot of trouble when she goes to a place where they donrsquot know her language If that place had bilingual employees then it would go faster for my mom Bilingual employees would help many people in our community Companies want bilingual people Bilingual people make more money on average than monolingual people For example Bilingual Telephone Interviewer is a good job They pay you $272300 - 340400 per month or $3267600 - $4084800 per yearrdquo -Thania Pulido Martinez

ldquoIf you only speak one language and the school only speaks another language then you wonrsquot understand and you will feel worried Imagine you are a Chinese student who just arrived from China It is your first day of school and you speak Chinese but the other kids speak English so you takes classes to learn English There is this word called bilingual It means that you could speak 2 languagesrdquo -Luis Ramirez Baca

ldquoAnother reason being bilingual is beneficial is bilingual children have better concentration According to an article I read its important because you can learn better and focus better This makes these people more important and more special If you can learn better you can know more about life Things like history math and health make more senserdquo -Melisa Pulido Martinez

ldquoBilingual children tend to focus or pay attention better because they can get a higher education I got this information from an article I read called ldquoBenefits of Raising Bilingual Childrenrdquo This is important If you can focus better then you get good grades Good grades give you the opportunity of more education You also get better at creative thinkingrdquo -Juan Alcantara
