Students are excited to share their progress and their
work with you at fall conferences. Conferences at
Erwin are student-led. Please plan to drop in with
your student for 30-45 minutes any time during the
during conference hours: Wednesday, October 9, from
4:15 p.m.-7:45 p.m. or Thursday October 10, 8:00 a.m.
-6:30 p.m.
In the days before conference time, students will be selecting work to share, and
reflecting on their personal work habits. During conferences, students will walk
you through their class schedules and share their accomplishments and struggles.
At the end of the conferences, we invite you to write some goals that we can then
support together.
Teachers will be available in their classrooms or pod areas to support students in
sharing their work and answer any questions you might have. Electives, special
educators and counselors are also available. We hope that you can join us for this
opportunity to focus on your child’s academic and personal success.

October SAC and PTA Meeting
Please join us for our first official SAC
(School Accountability Committee) and
PTA (Parent Teacher Association )meetings
for the 2019-2020 school year. The first
meeting will be held on October 28, 2019
from 6:00p.m.-6:45 p.m. for SAC and from 6:45 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
for PTA. Come learn about Lucile Erwin school data and focus
for the 2019-2020 school year. These organizations are open to
all! We can’t wait to see you there!
Student Handbook
All students will be reviewing the Student
Handbook in their grade level classrooms
this school year. In addition, we are asking
parents and students to sign off that they
have read a copy of the Student Handbook.

IB Learner Profile Traits Of The Month
Every month at Lucile Erwin we fo-
cus on an IB Learner Profile Trait.
In September we focused on Caring.
For the month of October we will fo-
cus on what it means to be Reflec-
tive. The focus on these profile
traits support students in making
positive contributions to the school
and community.
Caring: They show empathy,
compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of oth-
ers. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to
make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the envi-
ronment.
Reflective: They give thoughtful consideration to their own
learning and experience. They are able to assess and under-
stand their strengths and limitations in order to support their
learning and personal development.

After School Tutoring
LEMS Tutoring
Program
After-school tutoring will
begin on Tuesday Septem-
ber 3rd, and will take place
from 4:15-5:15 each Tues-
day and Wednesday in the Media Center throughout
the school year. Attendance is on a “drop in as needed
basis”, but parents must read and agree to our policies,
and must contact a staff member to sign up their stu-
dent, before their student will be allowed to attend.
To sign your student up for tutoring, please e-mail one
of the following staff members and ask for a policy
sheet: your student’s counselor, one of your student’s
teachers, or the tutoring coordinator, Mrs. Marvin

LEMS Choir
Choir students have been working on team building and getting
to know each other as well as finding their "sound" these first
few weeks of school.

8th Grade Team
LEMS 8th Grade Team
Greetings from the 8th grade team!
We have some information to help you
know what is happening, academically,
with your student here at Lucile Erwin
Middle School.
Science - Students are working on scientific process skills,
learning how to design investigations, and will soon be exploring
matter & physics.
Math – The district has adopted a new math resource: textbook,
student
workbooks, online website, and mobile app called Big-
IdeasMath.com.
Students can log in using their school email address and pass-
word
choosing the option "login via google" or via clever.com. Algebra
I students are also using Big Ideas Math, but will shift to a sec-
ond textbook (Envision) as part of a district pilot program.

8th Grade Continued
Individuals & Societies (History) – Students are examining
the geography of the eastern region of the United States & vari-
ous explorations. In mid-to-late September, we will begin study-
ing Jamestown and the various challenges those settlers faced.
An essay project will accompany this unit so watch for student
work involving Jamestown in the very near future.
Language & Literature (English) - Students are doing a nov-
el study of The Outsiders. Feel free to listen to some of your fa-
vorite Elvis tunes help your son/daughter get into the time peri-
od.
We can still use Kleenex & paper towels if students are willing
to “deliver” to their 1st hour teacher.
It's been a great start to the school year. Thank you for sending
your students prepared, positive, and ready to learn!!

National Junior Honor Society Induction
On September 19, 2019, Lucile Erwin was proud to induct 42 stu-
dents into the Lucile Erwin Middle School Chapter of the Nation-
al Honor Society. These students were selected on the following
set of criteria:
Scholarship: A minimum grade point average of 3.5 out of 4.0 scale
Service: Voluntary contributions made to our community or school
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem
solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from
school or community activities while working with or for others.
Character: The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high
standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for
others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record.
Citizenship: The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the
importance of civic engagement; has a high regard for freedom and justice;
respects democracy; respects the law for all citizens at the local, state, and
federal levels; and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility in
activities such as scouting, community organizations, or school clubs .
