LUID 2021 Director’s Welcome

Welcome and thank you for your interest in Liberty University’s Indoor Drumline! Becoming a member of LUID will be a rewarding challenge. Our website is a great place to look for more information regarding audition materials, audition dates, and locations. Please be proactive and communicate any conflicts with the staff immediately.

LUID is a professional percussion ensemble, in which you will be expected to behave in a professional manner, both on and off the floor. Since we are a Christian university, we will always display a Christ-like attitude to all. Sponsors provide us with high quality instruments, so we need to treat our equipment with the utmost respect and care.

This packet contains our current exercise regime and warm-up package. It is a representation of the techniques and styles that will be reflected in our 2021 presentation. When preparing for auditions, keep your hands/arms relaxed, play rhythms accurately, be confident, keep an open mind for learning new ideas/techniques, practice correctly, and have access to the internet for virtual sessions. Perform each exercise at a variety of tempos with a metronome. AND, have a pencil with you at ALL times!

Membership in LUID is reserved for LU students only. To be considered, please pay the one-time, non-refundable audition fee. This will include a staff member’s detailed feedback from your video submission, virtual clinic/session, and consideration for 2021 membership.

LUID 2021 Audition Information

With the current challenges surrounding COVID-19, we have revised our traditional audition process into one that appears slightly different, but will still offer the same educational experience. We will be sending out email reminders, but please also request to join “LUID 2021 Interest Group” on Facebook for more details as the process unfolds. Also, membership in LUID is reserved for LU students only.

Audition #1 - Video Submission Submit a Video Audition by 2pm EST, Sunday, October 25th.

Upload your “Unlisted” video to YouTube and email the link to tpgoddard@liberty.edu. Each applicant will receive detailed feedback from our staff via email. If you are open to playing multiple instruments, articulate your preferences in your video or email. Please see the audition information below regarding video requirements for each specific section.

Front Ensemble Audition Demonstrate ALL audition exercises from your respective audition packet with the following 2 tempos, 2x each:

EIGHTS: 100, 120

DIRT: 90, 120

CHROMATIC & MAJOR SCALES: 80, 100 (only 1st 1/2 to downbeat of bar 48)

‘TEYSH’21: 90, 120

TRIPLET BROCCOLI: 80, 100

Please record this video in one take, with NO editing. This should replicate a live audition.

*Mallets: In addition to your audition packet, please prepare a 30-second excerpt from a solo, DCI/WGI show, or virtuosic improvisation.

Drumline Audition Demonstrate ALL audition exercises from your respective audition packet with the following 2 tempos, 2x each:

EIGHTS: 120, 130

SINGLES: 112, 118

FF: 118, 122

STORM: 154, 164

6 ROLLS: 154, 164

*Snare & Quad Audition: In addition to your audition packet, please prepare a 30-second excerpt from a solo, DCI/WGI show, or virtuosic improvisation.

Audition #2 - Virtual Rehearsal via TeamsAttend a virtual Microsoft Teams rehearsal on Sunday, November 8th, from 2-6pm.

All applicants will attend the virtual rehearsal on November 8th. This will include a combination of a full ensemble meeting, drumline/front ensemble rehearsal, and sectional via break-out rooms. You will receive the link to our Teams rehearsal via email or on our Facebook “LUID 2021 Interest Group.”

Each applicant must have access to a device with a webcam, reliable internet access, and provide their own metronome (on a separate device from the one you plan to use for our virtual rehearsal). Applicants should be prepared to play along with tracks, play along with a metronome, and play individually.

Audition #3 - Final Audition at LU’s SOM Attend an invitation only, in-person audition on Sunday, November 22nd, from 2-6pm in the School of Music at Liberty University.

All appropriate safety measures and protocols will be followed, including, but not limited to: 

๏Self check prior to arrival - If you have symptoms, please notify Mr. Goddard and

do not attend this audition. A make-up audition will be scheduled.

๏Masks required at all times

๏Social Distancing required at all times

๏Remaining outside as much as weather allows

๏No sharing of sticks/mallets

๏Continual equipment disinfecting

๏Designated Entrance/Exit only interior doors for Social Distancing
