ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES AT THE MEDICAL COLLEGE OF WISCONSIN 1988 - 1999

Professor and Chairman, Department of Dermatology

In 1988, Dr. Diaz became the first Chairman of the newly established Department of Dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Under his direction the department expanded to become one of the leading academic programs in the Midwest. The initial faculty of 3 full time members increased to 12, including clinical dermatologists and basic scientists. NIH and the VA Central Office continuously funded the Dr. Diaz’s basic research since his arrival (1988-1999). The residency program grew from 6 to 12 residents. Several research fellows completed their training in the department and currently hold faculty appointments in different universities around the world. Some of Dr. Diaz’s academic activities at the Medical College of Wisconsin are listed below: 1) Administration: Medical College of Wisconsin and Affiliated Hospitals a) Chairman, Internal Review Committee, Preventive Medicine Department b) Chairman, Internal Review Committee, Neurosurgery Department c) Member, Search Committee, Neurosurgery Chairman d) Co-Director Dermatology Residency & Post Doctoral Research Program

. f) Administration of the dermatology clinical activities: The number of patients attended at the Dermatology Clinics (see below) increased from approximately 12,000 visits per year in 1989, when Dr. Diaz assumed the position of Chairman to approximately 38,000 during the 1997-1998 fiscal year. Patients were seen in the following facilities:

* Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital * Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin * VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI * Sixteenth Street Community Health Center, Milwaukee, WI * Harwood Medical Associates (Multi Specialty Group), Milwaukee, WI * Family Health Plan (Capitated HMO), Milwaukee, WI * Quadraphics Health Plan (Multi Specialty Group)

2) Patient Care and Community Service: Since his arrival at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1989, Dr. Diaz was involved in direct patient care at the FMLH-West Clinics, VA Medical Center and Harwood Medical Associates Clinics. In 1989, Diaz started an indigent clinic for Hispanics in the south side of Milwaukee (16th St. Community Health Center). He supervised the treatment of patients by dermatology residents and medical students. 3) Teaching Activities: Dr. Diaz was involved in the training of medical students, residents and postdoctoral fellows in clinical dermatology and immunological research. Under Dr. Diaz’s leadership the “International Dermatology Exchange Program” was established between the Departments of Dermatology of the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, the largest Dermatology Department in Latino America. As part of this very successful program, dermatology residents from Brazil spent 1-2 months in Milwaukee and Medical College of Wisconsin dermatology residents spent 2 months in Sao Paulo. The visiting resident was fully incorporated into the residency program of each department. This exchange program was one of the reasons that the Department of Dermatology received the prestigious Award for Excellence in

8

Education from the American Academy of Dermatology in 1993.

Dr. Diaz has also facilitated the exchange of medical students from the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Facultad de Medicina in Trujillo, Peru. 4) References: Michael Dunn, M.D. Dean and Executive Vice President Medical College of Wisconsin Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA 2000 – To date

Upon his arrival to UNC in January 2000, Dr. Diaz assumed the position of The CE Wheeler

Jr. Distinguished Professor and Chairman, Department of Dermatology. To fulfill the education, patient care and research mission of the department he began recruiting clinical and basic science faculty. The major challenges faced during the first few years were the result of a nationwide crisis of dermatologist-academicians. The pool of physician-scientists and clinician-educators in Dermatology is extremely small and the need to fulfill the clinical, research and educational demands are overwhelming. To address these issues and as President of the Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID), in 2001 Dr. Diaz started an annual National Retreat for Dermatology Residents interested in academic medicine (Rubenstein et al, J Amer Acad Dermatol, 47:300-3003, 2002). This innovative program apparently is producing some early positive results as shown in our recruitment efforts at UNC. Additionally, as President of the SID, Dr. Diaz testified before Congress requesting that the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) convene a workshop on “the burden of skin disease”, which was held in September 2003 (Quereshi et al, J Invest Dermatol, 9:111-119, 2004). All these activities were aimed at enhancing support for our dermatology specialty in clinical, educational and research endeavors. The following paragraphs outline Dr. Diaz’s activities at UNC:

1) Administration:

Administrative duties as Chairman of the Department of Dermatology (2000) Chairman, UNC Minority Cohort Recruitment Program (2000) Member, Search Committee, Department of Cell & Physiology (2001-To date) Member Search Committee, Curriculum for Reducing Health Disparities (2001) Chair, Advisory Committee, Minority Cohort Recruitment Program (2000) Chair, Five-year review, Chairman of Ophthalmology at UNC (2005) Leading the fundraising effort, assisted by the UNC Medical Foundation, to endow the Irene

and Robert Briggaman Chair. Completed in 8 months (February, 2005) Recruitment efforts (2000-2007): Dr. Diaz hired 12 of 17 of the current faculty members,

which include 4 physician scientists and 5 Ph.D. basic scientists. 2) Patient Care and Community Service: Dr. Diaz is currently involved in patient care activities, staffing outpatient clinics and the in-patient and consultation service. 3) Teaching Activities: Dr. Diaz is involved in the teaching program for UNC medical students, dermatology residents and postdoctoral fellows. Since January 1, 2002 to June 30, 2005 Dr. Diaz was the Director of the UNC Dermatology Residency Program. The ACGME-RRC site visited our program in the spring of 2003 and approved the program without citations for five years in August

9

25, 2003 for 12 residency positions (up from 9 positions previously approved). There are two international programs that Dr. Diaz has transferred from the medical College of Wisconsin to UNC:

The International Dermatology Resident Exchange Program with the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Our UNC dermatology residents are able to spend 1-2 months as part of the teaching program of the Dermatology Department of the University of Sao Paulo.

The International Exchange Program for Medical Students. This ongoing program allows our UNC students to rotate in the clinical services of the Faculty of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals in Trujillo, Peru.

4) Research Interest: Human Cutaneous Autoimmunity

Following his postdoctoral fellowship at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Diaz started his research career in dermatology at the University of Michigan in 1976. He continued his investigative work at Johns Hopkins University from 1982 to 1988, at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1988-1999, and at the University of North Carolina from 2000 to the present. He has focused his studies on defining the immunopathological mechanisms involved in three human autoimmune diseases: Pemphigus Vulgaris, Pemphigus Foliaceus and Bullous Pemphigoid. The following major scientific contributions are credited to Dr. Diaz’s research team: * Development of the first animal model of Pemphigus Vulgaris by passive transfer of human anti-epidermal autoantibodies. N. Engl. J. Med. 306:1189-1196, 1982. * Development of the first animal model of Pemphigus Foliaceus by passive transfer of human anti-epidermal autoantibodies. J. Invest.
