Luis Ayala, Intl. Assoc. AIA, LEED AP. Designer

Luis studied architecture at Universidad Catolica de Asuncion, Paraguay and Istituto Univeristario di Venezia, Italy. He graduated as an architect in 1998.In 1994, Luis became a professional photographer by Asociacion Paraguaya de Fotografos and in 1995, studied Interior Design at San Diego State University, CA. He founded “Gabinete de Arquitectura” with Solano Benitez and Alberto Marinoni in 1995 and worked as a principal of this firm for several years. Gabinete worked intensely on architecture as a sustainable whole, from the exterior envelope to interior design, they reinvented the way construction and design should be when resources are scarce. Out of hundreds of firms in Latin America, Gabinete was selected as one of the 5 finalists for the Mies Van der Rohe award in Barcelona, Spain. In 2000 their work was presented at the Biennale de Venezia, Italia and Sao Paulo bienal in Brazil. In addition, their work has been published in several architectural books and magazines. From 1999 to 2006 Luis taught architecture design at Universidad Nacional de Asunción and Universidad Catolica de Asunción. In 2007, he is invited by SHW group to work as a designer in Houston, TX. Since joining SHW, Luis has become a LEED Accredited professional and recently won the RDA Buffalo Bayou charette competition with SHW’s design team. Luis gave lectures about his work at Universidad Catolica de Asuncion in 1999 and 2006 and at the University of Houston in 2008. He was a jury member for the USGBC Houston chapter’s 2008 Environmental Building awards.

What initially began as a “repeat” school design resulted in one of the greenest elementary schools in the state of Texas without adding any costs to the district’s capital budget. When SHW Group and Spring ISD first began exploring the goals for the new school, conversations quickly turned to daylighting, energy efficiency and water conservation. This led to an original sustainable, high-performance school designed as a teaching tool that will educate generations of students about resource conservation. Pacesetting sustainability The school was designed to achieve LEED Gold certification and has already been accepted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to receive an ENERGY STAR rating due to its energy-efficient building design. In addition, SHW Group designed the school to meet criteria for Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), the nation’s first green building rating program especially designed for K-12 schools. The building will also be the first school in Houston to use geothermal heating and cooling, which is expected to save at least 25 percent in energy consumption over the current code. Once complete, the school will be a two-story rectangular building oriented with long sides facing north and south. Each classroom will have natural light and the south-facing classrooms will take advantage of daylight harvesting. In addition, the building was designed to have lights off in the classrooms 75 percent of the time, so each room will have sensors that turns the lights on and off based on levels of natural light. Teaching tool Before the school opens, Spring will work with Cambridge Strategic Services to design an environment-focused, project-based curriculum. This will ensure that the entire school and its sustainable elements are teaching tools. For example, the entry to the building will be alongside a science garden and eco-pond that includes an above-ground cistern and a water trough. These can be used to teach children integrated concepts about math and science that allow for real-world experiences. Under the parking lot and playgrounds is a geothermal well field that will house a system of tubes and valves that take hot and cold water in and out of the building. Through the use of a web-based learning tool, students will be able to interact with the building systems and know the temperature of the water as it leaves the building and when it returns from deep in the earth. Additional green features include: A highly reflective white-colored roofAn on-site wind turbine, 10,000-kilowatts of roof-mounted photovoltaic cells which will convert sunlight directly into electricityA butterfly garden along a walking trailAn underground cistern that will collect rainwater from the roof and be used to flush toilets and urinalsTrees from the existing site will be reused in the building as desks, benches and conference room tablesMany of the materials used for its construction will be made with recycled content or made of rapidly renewable resourcesThe school will also use less water by having no irrigation

Located in Fort Bend County and approximately 30 minutes southwest of Houston, the Needville community and its school district officials have a 20-year partnership with SHW Group. They trusted the firm to develop a design for the high school that will arise on a 250-acre site, defining the area’s independent and agricultural nature. Envisioned as an assembly of smaller structures integrally connected with the landscape, the desire for the facility was a design that avoided the conventional brick-box style of most schools, evoked the agrarian traditions found throughout Needville, and allowed students to be in grade-level, small learning communities.These goals allowed the design team the opportunity to explore Needville architectural character from Main Street to the rural countryside and to study, document and photograph the different elements that make up its community. In this exploration, the design team noted in the structures the emphasis on function over aesthetics that is prevalent in rural life. From this came the inspiration of Needville High School’s design – a machine aesthetic with an agrarian theme.At the facility’s heart is a central student gathering space designed as a silo feature and flanked by two academic wings housing the small learning communities. These communitites are organized around a courtyard that frames the view to the science building – a distinctive campus feature with exhaust hoods and a green screen in the form of latticework and vines on the west façade. Transparency is carried throughout the facility’s interior spaces, with ample glass framing the landscape and serving to acknowledge the land’s integral role within the community. Other agrarian-themed features:- a field wall of stacked stones in the library- corrugated metal panels on the curved auditorium walls that along with natural light, frame the auditorium stage- exposed steel trusses in the gymnasium, which is flooded with natural light and features a glass encased weight room on the second floor overlooking the basketball courts- a cupola and exposed trusses in the dining room reminiscent of a pavilion
