LUIS URIBETXEBARRIALuis nace en Ondiz, un barrio de Leioa cerca de Bilbao, el 12 de febrero de 1955. A los trece años, dos años después de la muerte de su padre, a la vez que estudia, inicia su temprana formación como aprendiz de orfebre en el taller Rotaetxe Viziola (Bilbao).

Son estos años donde Luis se refugia en los montes y los ríos encontrando en la naturaleza todo lo que cree perdido. “Nunca tuve miedo durmiendo en mitad del bosque, allí siempre me siento protegido”, dice el artista. Más tarde, compagina la labor de orfebre con las clases de dibujo artístico en la Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Bilbao.

A finales de los 70, crea su taller-estudio en Las Arenas, diseñando y creando piezas para la pujante burguesía vizcaína.

Luis se sumerge con intensidad y pasión en la naturaleza a través de deportes extremos, la pesca sin muerte o su amor a la mar y los barcos.

Su estilo, más allá de escuelas o movimientos artísticos, bebe directamente de la naturaleza con la que convive a diario.

LUIS URIBETXEBARRIALuis was born in Ondiz, a district of Leioa near Bilbao, on 12th February 1955. When he was thirteen, two years after his father died, he began his training as a goldsmith’s apprentice in the Rotaetxe Viziola workshop (Bilbao), fitting this around his schooling.

These are the years when Luis used to escape to the hillsides and the rivers, finding in nature everything he thought he had lost. “I was never afraid when I fell asleep in the middle of the wood, I always felt protected there”, said the artist. Later on, as well as working as a goldsmith he began taking drawing classes in the former School of Arts & Crafts in Atxuri.

At the end of the Seventies he set up his studio workshop in Las Arenas, designing and making fine jewellery pieces for Biscay’s burgeoning upper middle classes.

Luis immerses himself in nature with intensity and passion: he enjoys extreme sports, catch and release fishing, the sea and boats.

His style, over and above artistic schools or movements, is deeply influenced by nature, with which he lives daily.

EL ESCULTOR DE LA NATURALEZAToda la obra de Luis es un homenaje a su padre. Padre que ha proyectado en la naturaleza.

Como en los mitos antiguos, el poder y la fuerza del viento, las olas y el trueno resultan para Luis elementos protectores, símbolo de lo masculino, que le ha adoptado y le ha hecho su hijo predilecto.

Desde ahí se entiende su confianza, su admiración, su amor ciego y apasionado por la naturaleza en su estado más puro y salvaje.

Al tiempo que este maestro de la talla y la orfebrería ganaba en precisión técnica, su admiración por las formas y colores de la naturaleza se volvía más apremiante y su deseo de plasmarlas encontraba en la joyería el medio de expresión de este torbellino de sensaciones y pasiones.

Cada joya es, en las manos expertas de Luis, un homenaje de amor filial a su padre.

Mientras escala montañas y practica la pesca sin muerte en el Cabes (Asturias), su alma se relaja y se desborda en el río, serpentea en sus aguas y atraviesa los bosques para alcanzar las cimas. Y es a la vuelta, a su diminuto taller de Las Arenas, cuando volcado en las piezas homenajea lo eterno, lo infinito, lo sublime de sus experiencias únicas. Para dejarnos acompañarle, al contemplar su obra, en ese viaje iniciático.

THE SCULPTOR OF THE NATURE All Luis’ work is a tribute to his father. A father whom he has projected onto nature.

As with the ancient myths, the power and force of the wind, the waves and lightning are protective elements for Luis, symbol of masculinity, which he has adopted and made his favoured son.

From that starting point one understands his trust, his admiration, his blind and passionate love for nature in its purest, wildest form.

At the same time as this master of carving and gold work was honing his technique, his passion for the shapes and colours of nature became more urgent and he found a way of capturing their essence in jewellery, his means of expressing that whirlwind of feelings and passions.

Every jewel in Luis’ expert hands is a tribute to a son’s love for his father.

While he is climbing mountains and catch and release fishing in Cares (Asturías), his soul relaxes and overflows in the river, snakes along its waters and crosses the woods to reach the peaks. On his return, in his tiny workshop in Las Arenas, he pours into the pieces his tribute to the eternal, the infinite, the sublime, his unique experiences… To allow us to join him, in contemplating his work, on that rite of passage.

EL ALQUIMISTA INTEGRADOR El arte, como la vida, es cíclico. Tras un periodo de pureza de formas, hasta llegar a su expresión más mínima, la aparición de obras de arte que acumulan recursos creativos índica el final de una época y el inminente inicio de un movimiento nuevo.

Así es la obra de Luis, fusión de formas, culturas y materiales aparentemente opuestos, generación de diálogos sutilmente contundentes que inquietan nuestra alma aburguesada deseosa de un orden forzado que nos mantenga dormidos en la quietud de las líneas.

Los ángulos redondos y envolventes de la obra de Luis, el uso de maderas de Oriente y Occidente, la comunión de culturas y texturas nos hablan de un artista de su época.

Luis encarna la maestría de los grandes orfebres que florecieron en Europa tras la ruptura del Imperio Romano. Heredero directo de las técnicas de orfebrería propias del Imperio Bizantino por sus “calados de encaje”.

La de Luis es una técnica que si bien bebe de las fuentes clásicas de Europa se extiende hacia Oriente, con cuyas formas, texturas y colores se siente profundamente identificado.

A la vez, el artista vasco aúna un espíritu creativo e innovador que, ávido de experiencias, incorpora materiales variados, como maderas, piedras, cuernos, crines o plumas de todos los rincones del mundo, que han sustituido en su obra a los tradicionales esmaltes para aportar color.

Del fondo de su obra surge a la vez una profunda reverencia por su tierra, sus raíces, sus gentes y desde allí se impulsa para cruzar el mundo y abrazar con pasión lo de fuera.

Every time an artistic period ends, just before a new one is born, a Baroque movement emerges.

Luis is the 21st Century’s Baroque alchemist.

Luis’s way of looking is shared by a small number of human beings who do not see frontiers wherever they look. His gaze is one that brings together, that unites: materials, edges, cultures, disciplines…

Luis embodies the mastery of the great goldsmiths who flourished in Constantinople after the fall of the Roman Empire. He is direct heir of the Byzantine Empire’s art of gold working, for its lace fretwork.

Luis’ technique, while inspired by Europe’s classic sources, stretches towards the Orient with whose shapes, textures and colours he feels profoundly identified.

At one and the same time, the Basque artist blends in a creative and innovative spirit whose longing for experiences incorporates materials as varied as woods from all the corners of the globe, stones, animal horns, feathers, manes…all these have taken the place in his work of traditional enamels in providing colour.

From the depths of his work there arises a profound reverence for his land, his roots, his people, and from there it is impelled, crossing the world and embracing `the other´ with passion.

TÉCNICA Y ESTILO Luis trabaja solo el oro que él mismo elabora, como todos los alquimistas desde tiempo inmemorial.

El profundo conocimiento y respeto del artista vasco por la talla y la orfebrería se respira en la precisión de la técnica que contiene el genio creador que inspira toda su obra.

Luis es el eslabón de una cadena que nos conecta con las grandes civilizaciones de la humanidad.

Egipto y los imperios Romano y Bizantino han logrado mantenerse vivos hasta nuestros días en el respeto a la tradición y las técnicas que desarrollaron y que Luis aplica fiel y pacientemente en su trabajo día a día.

El “calado de encaje” propio de Florencia y Bizancio alcanza en el artista vasco una de sus manifestaciones cumbre.

Sus cadenas combinan magistralmente eslabones ancestrales con exquisitas incrustaciones de marquetería, sus tallas se enriquecen con plumas y brillantes aportando novedad a un arte milenario.

Egypt, the Roman Empire and Byzantium have succeeded in living on in our times because of the respect for the tradition and the techniques they developed and which Luis faithfully and patiently applies in his work every day.

The lace fretwork characteristic of Florence and Byzantium reach one of their highest manifestations in the work of the Basque artist.

His chains combine ancestral links with marquetry. His carvings are enriched with feathers and brilliants, bringing innovation to an art that is a thousand years old.

EL MOVIMIENTO El movimiento es otro de los elementos recurrentes de la obra de Luis.

“Lo que está vivo en la naturaleza se mueve”, dice el artista. Se mueve la hoja con la caricia del viento, se mueve el río al deslizarse un pez entre sus aguas, se mueve la flor sacudida por la gota de rocío.

Las piezas de Luis tiemblan, tintinean, se agitan, tienen vida propia a cada paso.

MOVEMENTMovement is another recurring theme in Luis’ work.

“Everything alive in the natural world moves”, observes the artist. A leaf moves with the caress of the wind. The river moves as a fish flashes through its waters, the flower moves, shaken by the dew drop.

Luis’s pieces tremble, tinkle, shake; they have their own lives every step of the way.

CALADO DE ENCAJE BIZANTINO Una de las señas inconfundibles del trabajo de Luis Uribetxebarría es el reverso de su obra.

Luis trae hasta nuestros días la tradición bizantina para regalarnos delicados calados de encaje en el reverso de sus piezas. El alma paciente del artista se vuelca en el oro y labra con manos expertas formas orgánicas de una delicadeza infinita.

Así es la naturaleza y así es Luis: excéntrico.

En el exquisito y minucioso trabajo de orfebrería que nos regala Luis en el envés de cada una de sus obras, se reconoce al gran maestro orfebre que honra y respeta la tradición.

Luis recuerda a las grandes sagas de orfebres italianos. Para él cada milímetro de su obra es un espacio en el que desplegar su inspiración.

BYZANTINE LACE FRETWORK One of the unmistakeable identifiers of Luis Uribetxebarría’s work is the reverse side of his work.

Luis has upheld the Byzantine tradition by offering us the gift of delicate lace fretwork on the back of his pieces. The artist’s patient soul concentrates on the gold as, with expert hands he works on the organic shapes with infinite delicacy.

As is nature, so is Luis: eccentric.

In the exquisite and delicate gold working which Luis presents us, on the reverse of each of his works, can be recognised the great gold working master who honours and respects tradition.

LA TALLA DE MADERAS EXOTICAS “Aunar el arte de la orfebrería al de la talla, hace de Luis un artista único. Es difícil encontrar a lo largo de la historia a alguien que haya dominado las dos disciplinas”. Didier Viltart, Dtr. Opera Gallery, Mónaco.

Pero Luis amaba el mar y con ella la carpintería de ribera vasca. En su familia hay ebanistas. La madera, las maderas, estaban presentes en su casa desde su niñez.

Y es así como Luis desde joven recompuso barcas y construyó botes. Conoció las vetas al tacto de las maderas.

“Una madera es un material vivo que no se puede tallar de cualquier manera. Debes pegarte a su alma, entenderla... si no, se abrirá en el momento que menos te lo esperas”, dice el artista.

Todo el saber hacer de la talla y la marquetería lo traslada Luis a su trabajo para expresar lo que lleva dentro.

But Luis loved the sea and its Basque shoreline carpentry. There are cabinetmakers in his family. Wood and woods have been a presence in his surroundings and in his home since he was a child.

This is why Luis has been putting together boats and building dinghies, since he was a young man. He understood the grains as he touched the woods.

Luis takes all his expertise in carving and marquetry to his work in order to express what he carries inside.

MATERIALES INNOVADORES Su alma inquieta le hace experimentar ininterrumpidamente con nuevos materiales.

“Tomar un nuevo material entre mis manos es excitante porque intuyo lo que puede surgir de él. Experimentar con un nuevo material es una apuesta que a veces acaba con un martillazo y una palabra gruesa, y otras en algo que me emociona”, confiesa el artista.

Al engaste de diamantes, perlas australianas y barrocas y gemas preciosas y semipreciosas, Luis añade el de maderas de todos los rincones del planeta o materiales del mundo animal, como el cuerno de búfalo, el de mamut o el colmillo de tiburón.

La orfebrería de Luis es la técnica que aúna todos los elementos vegetales, animales y minerales tal y como aparecen en la naturaleza. Crines, pieles, piedras, plumas, traídas éstas de la pesca sin muerte que ayudó a implantar en su día.

Cualquier elemento de la naturaleza adquiere una nueva vida, una vida inmortal en manos de este artista del siglo XXI.

INNOVATIVE MATERIALS His restless spirit makes him experiments with new materials steadily.

“When I take a new material in my hands I am excited because I have an intuition about what might come out of there. Experimenting with a new material is an adventure which sometimes ends with a blow of the hammerand an oath, and other times in something which moves me”.

Luis adds woods from all parts of the globe and noble materials from the animal kingdom, such as buffalo, mammoth and shark, to the diamonds, Australian and baroque pearls, and precious and semi-precious stone setting.

Luis’ gold working brings together all the animal, vegetable and mineral elements just as they appear in the natural world. Manes, skins and feathers, the latter brought from the world of catch and release fishing which he helped to popularise back in the day.

All natural elements take on a new life, a life that is immortal in the hands of this artist of the 21st century.

En esta etapa la obra se centra en la talla.

Todo el saber hacer de la ebanistería, le delicadeza de la marquetería, el dominio de las diferentes vetas le permiten extraer de un bloque las formas escondidas que esperan nacer de nuevo a la vida.

Es el momento en el que el artista domina la técnica y se recrea de un modo soberbio y preciosista, haciendo gala de su dominio sobre los elementos.

Luis no se conforma con honrar a los maestros de los que ha aprendido el oficio a lo largo de cuarenta y cinco años, el artista vasco además innova y aplica la técnica en el manejo de nuevos materiales como el cuerno de búfalo africano, o el mamut y diferentes maderas traídas de todos los rincones del mundo.

In this phase Luis concentrates on the carving.

All the expertise of joinery, the delicacy of marquetry, the mastery of different grains, enable him to extract from a block the hidden shapes which are waiting to be born again into life.

This is the moment in which the artist is master of his technique and experiments, soberly yet ornately, using to full advantage his control of the elements.

For Luis it is not enough to honour the masters from whom he learned his trade over the course of forty five years; Luis also innovates and applies technique to handling new materials such as African buffalo and mammoth horn, and different types of wood brought from all the corners of the world.

En COSMOLOGÍA Luis se embarca en un diálogo de silencio y vacío para rendirse a la magia que encuentra en plena naturaleza.

Su serie COSMOLOGÍA es un canto a la desnudez de la obra cumbre del universo: “¿Qué más podría yo añadir tallando aquí?” se pregunta, ante la textura exquisita de una piña australiana o las curvas perfectas de un tejo vasco.

En COSMOLOGÍA Luis solo añade a la naturaleza muerta el homenaje de la orfebrería y las perlas, sus amadas perlas barrocas, a lo que ya es en sí la mayor obra de arte del universo, para hacer de ellas piezas inmortales.

In COSMOLOGÍA Luis embarks on a dialogue of silence and emptiness to surrender himself to the magic he finds in the midst of nature.

His COSMOLOGÍA series is a hymn to the nakedness of the universe’s greatest work. “What more could I contribute by carving here?” he asks himself, when looking at the exquisite texture of an Australian pineapple or the perfect curves of a Basque yew tree.

In COSMOLOGÍA Luis adds to the still life only his gold working tribute and pearls, his beloved Baroque pearls, to what is already in itself the best work of art in the universe, to make of them immortal pieces.

En abril de 2009 Luis aterriza en Ullanbaator, capital de Mongolia. El artista quedó impactado por el contraste entre la riqueza cultural e histórica del país y la tragedia humana encarnada en los “niños rata” que sobreviven a los cincuenta grados bajo cero en la noche, abrazados a las tuberías de agua caliente bajo las alcantarillas.

Entre moles de cemento, encuentra un niño de 10 años con un bebé en brazos pidiendo limosna. Sobrecogido, le da unas monedas al tiempo que ve moverse un bulto a sus pies. “Cuando levanté la tela descubrí un niño de unos tres años que me miraba asustado. Esa imagen se me ha clavado dentro y hay días y noches que no consigo apartarla de mí”. Luis Uribetxebarría.

La adoración de la naturaleza por el chamanismo y la fusión de budismo con el universo chocan frontalmente con la crueldad de la realidad que contempla Luis en las calles de la capital.

El dramatismo de esta polaridad se plasma en las piezas del artista vasco de esta época, cuyo cromatismo rojo, negro y blanco invoca las fuerzas de la vida, la muerte y la sangre.

Las obras realizadas durante los tres años posteriores a su viaje honran elementos tan mongoles como el pelo de caballo Przewalski, el oro que inunda el sur del país, o el rojo intenso que los mongoles usan en sus obras de arte en madera o textil. Las piezas de esta época están cargadas de una dramática belleza.

In April of 2009, Luis landed in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia. The contrast between the country’s cultural and historic wealth and the human tragedy, embodied by the “rat children”, who survive at night-time temperatures of fifty degrees below zero, by clinging to the hot water pipes under the drains, impacted the artist strongly.

He found a ten-year old boy with a babe in arms begging among blocks of concrete. Deeply moved, he gave the child some coins and as he did so he saw a bundle moving at his feet. “When I lifted up the cloth I discovered a three year old child looking up at me, frightened. That image has stayed with me and there are days and nights when I cannot push it away”. Luis Uribeetxebarría.

The adoration of nature in shamanism and the fusion with Buddhism are brutally inconsistent with the cruelty of the reality that Luis saw around him in the streets of the capital.

The drama of that polarity is captured in the pieces made by the Basque artist from that period, with colours of red, black and white evoking the forces of life, death and blood.

The works made in the three years after his trip honour essential Mongol elements such as hair from the. Przewalski wild horse, the gold inundating the country’s southern plains, and the intense red the Mongols use in their wood and textile art works. The pieces from that time are charged with a dramatic beauty.

Luis Uribetxebarria explora el territorio de la escultura, como varios escultores vascos a lo largo de la historia, estableciendo conexiones desde y hacia la función. Su mirada personal, como en la relación con la orfebrería, propone transformar la materia para convertirla en material.

La acción de la escultura esta presidida por el volumen y el significado, dando relevancia a la forma. Esta posición silenciosa, permite que la materia transmita mensajes y connotaciones que actúan sobre nuestra percepción.

Sugiere un viaje, que transcurre entre acciones y transformaciones, con un fragmento de naturaleza discontinua y contenida. Sus realidades imaginarias establecen una profundidad de significados, anclándose en sus raíces con su propia cultura.

Las transformaciones operadas en el seno de la materia, permiten tratar este sustrato y su condición, ofreciendo una apertura de alternativas y posibilidades. En definitiva, se puede pensar que su escultura retoma una intensidad dialéctica entre forma y función, entendiendo ésta como un sistema de lenguaje y conocimiento. Los límites que surgen de su propia estructura, de las relaciones formales existentes, constituyen un orden de su universo.

Su acción de la escultura se realiza con el esfuerzo por determinar cómo se ven alterados los procesos naturales, cuya presencia sobrepasa el ámbito individual, adentrándose en el del arte. Para Luis, la mano es un aliado del cerebro y gracias a ella consigue convertir las ideas en objetos escultóricos.

Luis Uribetxebarria explores sculpture as several other Basque sculptors have done over time, forging connections to and from function. His personal view, like in his craftsmanship in precious metals, proposes transforming matter to convert it into material.

The action of sculpting is presided by volume and meaning, giving shape relevance. This silent position enables material to transmit messages and connotations which act on our perception.

It suggests a journey which elapses between actions and transformations, with a discontinuous and contained nature. Its imaginary realities set a depth of meanings, anchored in the roots of its own culture.

The transformations rendered in the core of matter, enable this substrate and its condition to be treated, opening up alternatives and possibilities. In short, one can think that his sculpture resumes a dialectic intensity straddling form and function, understanding this as a language and knowledge system. The limits which arise from its own structure, of the formal relationships that exist, represent an order in his universe.

His sculpting action is performed with the endeavour to learn how natural processes are altered, the presence of which surpasses the individual sphere and enters that of art. For Luis, his hand is an ally of his brain and thanks to this, he manages to convert his ideas into sculpted objects.

La obra de Luis forma parte de colecciones privadas de un lado a otro del planeta.

Ex-presidentes de Estado, Casas Reales europeas, actrices y una larga lista de coleccionistas privados poseen piezas del artista vasco.

Su obra se ha expuesto en museos, facultades de Bellas Artes y hoteles de lujo (Arts de Barcelona). Sus esculturas se han convertido en premios de instituciones públicas y privadas.

Luis no sólo es un gran maestro orfebre, ha integrado la talla en la orfebrería y ha innovado con materiales nunca antes usados en este arte.

Su amor por el uso de nuevos materiales le convierte en uno de los orfebres más innovadores a nivel mundial.

Luis’ work forms part of private collections from one end of the planet to the other.

Former heads of state, European royal house, actresses and private collectors possess pieces by the Basque goldsmith artist.

His work has been exhibited in museums, Fine Arts faculties and luxury hotels (such as Arts Hotel in Barcelona). His sculptures have become prizes in public and private sector institutions.

Luis is not only a great goldsmith master; he has restored the artisan’s carving to gold working and has introduced materials which had never been used in this art.

His love of experimenting with new materials makes him one of the most innovative master goldsmiths in the world.
