Now in its ninth year, The Lulaworld festival brings together Toronto’s finest world, jazz and Latin musicians performing alongside and collaborating with, celebrated international guests. In anticipation of the Toronto 2015 PANAM games, Lulaworld will focus on artists with cultural roots in Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad, Guadalupe and Brazil and include influences from Angola, Israel, Portugal, Turkey and Italy.

The 2014 Lulaworld festival will highlight the incredible breadth and calibre of the Toronto live music scene while providing local artists the opportunity to work with visiting musicians from outside Toronto. For the very first time, the festival will conclude with a full day of free outdoor programming at the Lulaworld stage presented by CBC Toronto as part of Dundas West Fest.

The festival also launches with two free events. Join us at Lula on Saturday, May 17 at 2:30 pm for a workshop exploring the roots of changui and son, led by ethnomusicologist Lani Milstein and Cuban dance instructor Dailyn Martinez.

On the first night of the festival, Sunday, May 18, we’re inviting everyone to join us for free before 9 pm. Please help us launch the festival by attending these opening concerts and all night dance party!

Lulaworld is presented by Lula Music and Arts Centre with the support of the Toronto Arts Council, The Ontario Arts Council, The Government of Ontario, Canadian Heritage, Business for the Arts, media sponsor CBC Toronto, Telelatino, Mill Street Brewery, Barocco Coffee Company, Toronto Hispano, MGSMarketing Print Graphics and our many presenting partners.

After many years exploring the standard jazz repertoire, members of the Tel-Aviv-based Vanunu Ethno-Jazz Ensemble have styled their own unique and contemporary fusion of traditional Jewish folk music (nigunim) with ethnic Middle-Eastern influences and classic jazz. Led by Eli Vanunu on saxophone, the band features three of Israel’s hottest jazz players: Dor Heled on piano, Igor Kogan on double bass, and Uri Seelig on drums. Co-presented with Jewish Music Week in Toronto which runs May 18 to 25.

Building upon his successful Symphronica Lula residency, pianist Ron Davis (“one of the great minds in jazz!”, according to JAZZ.FM91), collaborates with visionary taiko drumming group Nagata Shachu. While rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, Nagata Shachu’s principal aim is to rejuvenate this ancient art form by producing innovative and exciting music to create a new voice for the taiko.
