This is your chance to have a say on the proposed Biosecurity Strategy arrr: :
proposaI for a Southland RegionaI Pest N,lanagement PIan I his consuItalLdocument provides a basic overview, but you can read the luLI documer]l:and find oul more al www.es.govt.nz/pestpLan

Why do we need anew plan?
The current RegionaI Pest Management Strategy needs to be
reviewed to meet the netry requirements in the Government's
National PoLicy Direction for Pest Management To do this we
have undertaken a significanl review of the existirrg strategy and,
in consuttation with interested grcups and indtviduaLs, we have
developed a proposal lor a South[and Regional Pest N,lanagement
Plan, accompanied by a Biosecurity Strategy.
The strategy outIines how Environment Southland willoversee
the management of biosecurity over lhe next 10 years, lncIuding
key objectives and howthese may be achieved. t's ourvision for
biosecurity into the luture and, together rvlth the proposal for a
Southland Regional Pest Management Plan, teIls Environment
Southland's biosecu rity story.
The futu re ofregu Iatio it's about communities working TE
we manage a he
proposed strategy and plan sets out the vray we work, and witl
continue to work, to assist and support the indlviduals and groups
aLready doing their part for biosecurlty.
'. What's changed?
Our new proposa[or a Reglonal Pest f/anagement Plan Looks
dlfferent to our previous strategy. lt contarns fewer specified pests
and ruLes. This is largely because many harmfuIspecies do not
need regional ruLes for us to manage them.
A detailed process was used to consider each species and whether it
was appropriate to include it in lhe plan. This included considering any
nationaI rules aIready ln place, underlaking an impact assessment, a
cost benef ri anaLysis, and consideration on whether any potential rule
was likely to be effective, lair and enforceable. Only those spccies that
met the threshold in this process were included in the plan.
However, just because a harmfuL species is not specificaLly
menlioned in our pest plan does not mean we do nol have a
role to pLay in managlng it - our biosecurity team is abIe to offer
information, advice and assistance on all types of harmfuIspecies.
Envrronment Southtand manages and contributes to a range of
programmes and projects designed to protect and enhance lhe
naturalenvironment, people, property, business and investment -much of hor,v,le do things day-to-day will not change.
Biosecurity also corrlributes oirectly to the preservation and
enhancemeni of SouthLand's indigenous blodiversity. Envlronment
Southland's programrxes work together across the organrsation
to contrbute lo a lhriving Southland. Biodiversity is a key priority
for Envrronment Southland. Strong pest management has a major
parl to play in enhancing blodiversity, by reducing the impact of
harmful species lhat threaten native f Lora and fauna.
