From The Deputy Principals

Dear Parents and Carers This term has certainly begun with full speed ahead! We have had quite a busy few weeks since our last newsletter and have had lots of exciting things happening. We are so proud of our school and the enormous effort that our staff dedicates to ensuring that our school is an innovative and exciting place for our students. We are extremely honoured to lead such as great team of people. 50th Anniversary Celebrations You will read more about this momentous occasion later in the newsletter. Without our fantastic staff, students and community, this event would not have been the success that it was. We would like to thank each and every person involved. In particular, can we take this opportunity to thank our staff on the Events Team: - Miss Melanie Thomas, Mrs Danielle Bussell, Mrs Sue Riley, Mrs Anne Marie Nott, Mrs Rebecca Norris, Ms Kerry Thorley, Mrs Tiffany Barnaby and Ms Chez Whyles. Uniform update Our students are all wearing their complimentary polo shirt and hat with pride. It was great to see all of our students wearing their uniforms on the first day of Term 4 at our morning assembly. It was definitely an accomplishment seeing this occur after an extensive process to get to this point. Further information on stock availability is overleaf. Quality Teaching This term, our staff will be involved in many more professional discussions about what quality teaching and learning looks like in their classrooms. Throughout the term, our staff have the opportunity to meet in their stage teams and undertake professional learning in the areas of Best Start and Focus on Reading. This is a great opportunity for our teachers to reflect on their teaching practice, share ideas with colleagues and continually strive for improvement. Our aim is to continue to deliver the highest of educational programs to all students. Until next time… Lauren Dunlop and Lisa Stipanovic Deputy Principals

50th Anniversary Celebrations

On Tuesday 16 of October, Lurnea PS celebrated the anniversary of 50 years since the official opening of the school in 1962. It was a full day of celebrating, commencing with a short whole school assembly where each class presented an item to be stored in the time capsule for future generations. The time capsule will be buried at a later date near our new Anniversary Garden. The school captains along with Mrs Lloyd and Aunty Jennie, the longest serving staff members, cut a huge cake for the school to share. Later in the afternoon, official guests including local Principals, our School Education Director, Mrs Maria Serafim, our Liverpool Mayor Mr Ned Mannoun, Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) representatives, community members and school staff gathered to officially open the Anniversary Garden and unveil the original school bell. It was also a time to reminisce about the official opening and the school’s history to date. After school, classrooms were opened to allow past students and staff to come and see what the Lurnea of 2012 looks like compared to the school that they remembered. A vast memorabilia collection was displayed in the new hall showcasing the school’s history and achievements over the past 50 years. Stories and memories were shared with the community of today including the original construction and the early years. One of the stories heard on the day was about how two students began Kindergarten in 1961 and have gracefully matured together as a married couple. Thanks need to go to all of the school community for their part in making the day such a wonderful event. The support and interest for this significant event was outstanding. Lurnea Public School sure is the place to be!

50th Anniversary Mural Our mural was installed just in time for our anniversary celebrations. Every child and staff member in the school created their own tile with their portrait and name to commemorate 50 years of education at Lurnea Public School. The new mural is located outside the Computer Lab, so be sure to stop by and see who you can spot. A big thanks to Chez, our friendly General Assistant, for all her work during the school holidays to ensure the mural was just perfect. What a fantastic momento for everyone who contributed a tile to come back in another 50 years time to look back on.

Anniversary Garden Our 50th Anniversary Garden has been a huge success with many students, families and staff purchasing a commemorative paver. We are extremely grateful for all the support in making this such a beautiful asset to our school. The garden was officially opened last Tuesday 16 October by Mrs Mary-Lou Halloran, one of our longest serving staff members and Mackenzie and Rayanne our 2012 school captains. They had the honour of cutting the red ribbon and officially opening the Anniversary Garden to the public. If you ordered a paver, please make sure you pop down and visit our garden, which is located out the front of the office. To ensure that no one misses the opportunity to purchase a paver, we have offered a second release of orders. Order forms are available on our website or from the front office. Please complete the form and return all money to the front office by Friday 30 November. The second release will be added to the garden during the summer holidays. Please direct any enquiries to our Community Liaison Officer, Mrs Leanne Hedger on 0467 960 428.

Uniform Update

Yesterday all students received their complimentary school hat. Our students and parents loved the choice between a legionnaires hat, slouch hat or a cap. If for some reason your child requires another size or style, please do not hesitate to contact Leanne Hedger our Community Liaison Officer on 0467 960 428 who will be more than happy to assist you. From this point forward, all students are expected to wear a school hat and no other hat will be accepted. All parents and carers, who have placed an order, please be advised that we are currently processing all orders. We have most items from the summer uniform available for sale and all winter items are still in production. We thank you for your cooperation and patience during this process. We would like to take this opportunity to remind families that students are still required to wear black school shoes for safety reasons. We have had quite a few students wear footwear that is inappropriate for school. Should you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to contact the office.

Stage 2 Visual Arts Workshop Stage 2 were incredibly lucky to have Year 12 Visual Arts students from Lurnea HS visit for a Creative Arts workshop. The students used artworks as inspiration to create their own special pieces based on our HSIE unit National Parks. Stage 2 thoroughly enjoyed the experience and produced some very interesting artworks. Special thanks must go to Mrs Banerji for all of her tireless efforts in organising such a great event.

Anaphylaxis Awareness To minimise risk to students with possible Anaphylaxis reaction, we would like to draw your attention to nut allergies. It is very important that all the community is aware that some students at our school have nut allergies. As a precaution could you please eliminate nut products such as Nutella, peanut butter and other snacks that contain nuts from your child’s lunch box.

Every week all of our students participate in interactive lessons that focus on our school rules and social skill of the week. This term, our Stage 3 students are participating in Peer Support activities and will be leading parts of the lesson. This is a great opportunity for the Stage 3 students to develop their public speaking and leadership skills. Here are 2S participating in last week’s lesson on Anti-Bullying.
