Kane’s a Harley-DaviDson® fixture in Calgary for 57 years

When you are looking for another piece of machinery to enhance that collection of luxury motor vehicles your garage, the choice of many is a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle.

business profile

ADvertoriAl

“For the person who has the high-end house, who has a Lamborghini or Porsche

parked in the garage, it’s likely they have a high end Harley®,” says Mick Cawthorn,

owner of Kane’s Motor Cycle Shop.“There are a lot of people in Alberta with good incomes,

who are willing to pay for the best, which is why they want a Harley-Davidson®.”

And it’s likely they purchased it at Kane’s – a fixture in Calgary for 57 years. Founded

by its namesake Robert Kane, an avid motorcycle enthusiast and Harley-Davidson®

rider, Kane’s originally sold bikes from various manufacturers, but has sold Harley-

Davidsons® exclusively for more than 25 years and is the only exclusive Harley-Davidson®

retailer in Calgary. It also recently went through an 18,000-sq.-ft. expansion making it

one of the largest Harley-Davidson® dealerships in Canada, in addition to being Alberta’s

oldest.

“We enjoy a large clientele and they come from all walks of life from new drivers and

retirees to blue collar workers to executives,” says Cawthorn, who speaks from experience

as he’s been with Kane’s for the more than 40 years starting out as a mechanic before

buying the shop.

A key factor that draws so many people to Kane’s is that it can customize any bike

and make it to whatever the buyer desires, Cawthorn says, noting that not all Harley-

Davidson® bikes are expensive – it’s often the customization and accessories that up

the ante.

“Those who want luxury or something custom will spend thousands of dollars to

personalize their bikes,” he says, adding features that will make it a one of such as chrome,

by HeatHer Ryan

paint, seats, handle bars, decorative components and more.

“They really want to make it unique so that when it’s parked

in a row of a lot of other bikes – theirs will stand out and

make a statement.”

For example, Kane’s currently has a 2013 Street Glide

bike in its showroom that was customized in-house with

loads of upgrades and a custom red and black paint job that

pushed the cost of the bike upwards of $40,000.

Cawthorn says for those customers with really discerning

tastes they want a bike that features a custom Harley-

Davidson® paint job. These Harley-Davidson® custom

paint jobs are available for 75-200 bikes worldwide so they

definitely offer “a look that goes well beyond the

standard.”

From high-end to basic, Kane’s offers wide selection of

bikes for sale in its showroom and upstairs you’ll find a vast

array of accessories that carry the iconic Harley-Davidson®

brand from jackets, boots and helmets to clothing, luggage

and more.

In addition, it offers a full service and parts department,

rentals and operates the iconic Kane’s Harley Diner adjacent

to the dealership in Inglewood.

To learn more about Kane’s Motor Cycle Shop,

LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2014 [7]

Renovations that Inspire

EDITOR’SNOTE

Luxury marketLast summer there was speculation as to where the luxury market in Calgary was

headed, while reports of record-setting deals began to wane in light of the fl ood. A look at the renovation and building industry in and around the city confi rms the luxury market is doing well and, in fact, booming as rebuilding continues and new projects are launched. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation announced recently that a slew of new developments, including condos and rental properties, are being built to support a demand in housing for high-income professionals moving to the city. With an array of new and renovated projects on the go, the luxury market is defi nitely healthy and competitive. Although construction costs have risen sharply over the last few years, the competition to fi nd trustworthy renovators, tradespeople, builders, Realtors and other related talent, is fi erce.

For a look at some of the top experts in the business, check out this issue’s Business Profi les which spotlight a few of Calgary’s best.

When choosing a resource, be sure to look for people and businesses that can o er awards, testimonials and endorsements from accredited a liates and associations. And if you’re in the market for a custom builder or renovator, be sure to ask for referrals from actual clients to help gauge a company’s creditability .

Also ahead in this issue, a salute to two hometown heroines, Kallie Humphries and Cheryl Bernard, who talk about their likes, their loves and their favourite luxuries that make living in Calgary a joy.

Another must-read, Elisa Krovblit’s Staying in Style story on page 40 details the latest luxury hotel brand to come to Calgary, the Aloft Calgary University by W, and takes a look at an old favourite, the Fairmont Palliser, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

There’s plenty more luxury and good reading ahead. We hope you enjoy our latest issue. If you have any questions or comments, please write to us. We love hearing from you!

HEROES

LUXURY LIVING: What do you love about living in Calgary? CHERYL BERNARD: People who live here and the culture they create are amazing. We are relaxed individuals, but driven. We have strong individual and corporate philanthropy and we are a city that cares for others. I see it every day in the charities we support and the volunteers who step forward. This was never more evidenced than during and after our 2013 fl ood

– I was never more proud to be a Calgarian. I love that we put on the greatest outdoor show on Earth, I love the Bow River, I love that we are a city that wears jeans on Fridays! And I love that I can see the Rocky Mountains every day.

LL: What do you fi nd ‘luxury’ about living in Calgary? CB: Luxury to me is having access to parks and greenspace, pathways and the river. I think you pretty much have it all when you have those things. I have spent many years biking, running, walking my dog Hugo and riding my horse on Nosehill – it’s incredible how you can fi nd so many spots up there that make you think you aren’t in the city anymore! We don’t realize what a luxury that is.

LL: How would you describe your home? CB: Welcoming – warm. I love my home – it’s the place I go to get away from the public side of my life.

LL: What are your favourite neighbourhoods and why? CB: Well, we are just looking at moving to Hillhurst/Kensington because it’s one of our favourite areas in the city – we want that ‘walkabout’ lifestyle. I also love Bowness, Bridgeland and Inglewood. I think for me it’s because they are all river communities and they have an amazing walkability score and community feel.

LL: How has living in Calgary shaped your development and career as an athlete? CB: I have three very good friends who are very prominent in the business community, and in the years when I was pursuing my Olympic dream, they kept me believing. That’s the type of people this city produces. We support the athletes, more than in just a monetary way – this city believes in being the best we can be and I think that has always propelled me to want to do everything I could to make Calgary proud.

LL: You’ve inspired so many people. What do you want to tell young kids with Olympic dreams?CB: That you don’t achieve success in life by default, you achieve it with strong relationships, belief in your dreams and a healthy perspective. No one is born an Olympian, it takes hours and hours of belief and preparation. But success is available to anyone who wants it. But don’t play a sport just because you want to get to the Olympics – play it because you love it. I may have never made it to the Olympics in curling and I would have been just fi ne with that because I loved the game for so many other reasons.

My favorite quote is by Muhammad Ali. It’s on my website cherylbernard.com and it’s pasted to my mirror. It’s what I try never to forget. He said ” The fi ghts been won or lost, far away from witnesses, behind the lines, in the gym and out there on the road long before I dance under those lights.”

Our team clearly understood that the game had been won long before we stood under those lights on that Olympic stage in Vancouver… That it had been won in the weeks and months and years before.

Skip of the Women’s Olympic Curling Team, Cheryl Bernard brought home a Silver medal from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics

Canadians have a lot to be proud of when it comes to our Olympic athletes. They’ve performed extremely well and brought home many medals. Hometown heroes swell us with a special kind of pride. Luxury Living caught up with Cheryl Bernard and Kaillie Humphries, to fi nd out more about the life of an Olympian and the comforts of home. After all, gold and silver are some of the fi nest luxuries there are!

COVERSTORY

LL: What do you love about living in Calgary? KH: I am very proud to say I am a true Calgarian, born and raised here. Living so close to the mountains and having access to the prairies has given me an outlook many people don’t get to experience. My sister and brother-in-law are huge into the ranch life, with my family owning numerous horses. I have grown up riding. I currently live in the city, and as I watch it grow and diversify, I am amazed at how well we manage to accept yet transform newcomers into our Alberta roots.

I also grew up in the heart of the Rockies, driving every single weekend to the mountains either for skiing or hiking. Banff and Canmore have become a huge part of where I was raised, spending so much time in and around that area.

LL: Favourite neighbourhoods in Calgary? KH: I have always lived in the S.W. and N.W. areas. I currently own a house in Tuscany (N.W. part of Calgary), but grew up in Signal Hill and Strathcona area.

LL: What is your personal decor style like? KH: My decor style is the antique look with a modern twist. I absolutely love shopping at Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn. I enjoy neutral colours (black, brown, white, tan, beige, with a little splash of a softer colour mixed in, usually turquoise or light blue.)

LL: Favourite childhood memories related to Calgary? KH: The Calgary Zoo is still one of my fondest memories as a child growing up here. My mom use to take us to the zoo every week.

LL: What do you find “luxury” about living in Calgary? KH: I think living in Calgary offers many luxury options – it honestly depends on your style. Wether you live directly in the city, or surrounding areas, there is something for everyone.

Calgary is unique in its location and heritage. We are cowboy country, with the option of being a city slicker.

The city has grown very large in land mass, we have yet to grow upwards.

The rocky mountains being 45 minutes away.

LL: How has living in Calgary shaped your career development as an athlete? KH: Living and growing up in this city has shaped me as an athlete in every way possible. I am a child of the ’88 legacy. All my training has been based around Canada Olympic Park and the Oval. Without those facilities, I would have never had the same opportunities to try sports and find out what I loved best and what I was good at. Options open doors.

LL: You’ve inspired so many people, what do you want to tell young kids with Olympic dreams? KH: I love speaking to young kids about sport and the Olympics. I tell them that having fun is the first rule. The second rule is to do your best.

Being inspirational isn’t about what you say, it’s more about being exactly who you are, working hard for your goals and achieving them. I choose to be inspirational with actions – it has a more lasting effect.

I tell kids that sport will teach them lots of life lessons. It’s not going to be easy, but they have to believe in the power of their dreams and never give up.

I tell them to trust in their family (whether that’s parents, brothers/sisters, grandparents, friends) because when it gets hard they will need help.

I tell them to never stop learning and growing. To be humble when you win, and be respectful to all other people always.

LL: Having experienced what it’s like to train and work and strive, what do you want to tell their parents? KH: I instill the fact that sport is a safe place for everyone, and that no matter what anyone says, nothing is impossible. If I can do it, so can you. It’s about finding something you love to do, working hard and making sacrifices for it, so that you can be your very best.

LL: Why Calgary? KH: Who I am as a person and an athlete is shaped by my surroundings. The city I live in and the people I surround myself with are all major players. I am very fortunate to have grown up and lived here in Calgary.

Pilot of the Women’s Olympic Bobsledding Team, Kaillie Humphries brought home her first Gold from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and her second Gold from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

KH: I have always lived in the S.W. and N.W. area. I currently own a house in Tuscany (N.W. part of Calgary), but grew up in Signal Hill and Strathcona area.

LL: What is your personal décor style like? KH: My decor style is the antique look with a modern twist. I absolutely love shopping at Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn. I enjoy neutral colours (black, brown, white, tan, beige, with a little splash of a softer color mixed in, usually turquoise or light blue.)

Calgary is unique in it’s location and heritage. We are cowboy country, with the option of being a city slicker.

The city has grown very large in land mass, we have yet to grow upwards.

The rocky mountains being 45 minutes away.

LL: How has living in Calgary shaped your development career as an athlete? KH: Living and growing up in this city has shaped me as an athlete in every way possible. I am a child of the ‘88 legacy. All my training has been based around Canada Olympic Park and the Oval. Without those facilities I would have never had the same opportunities to try sports and find out what I loved best and what I was good at. Options open doors.

Previously a numbered Alberta company, newly named Screentech Inc., it has been

a distributor and installer of Phantom Screens in Southern Alberta since 1992.

Phantom Screens carries three types of screens: Phantom, which are the “original”

retractable door screens that open side-to-side; Serene, which are manual top down

screens for windows; and Executive, which are motorized remote-controlled screens for

large openings.

“Our Executive Screens are a luxury item; we’re putting them on a lot of high-end

homes in Calgary and on acreages in Springbank, Bearspaw and De Winton,” says Ron

Belt, president of Phantom Screens of Calgary.

“By installing these large powered screens you can extend the amount of time you

can enjoy the outdoors because they not only block out mosquitoes and other pests, they

block the wind and sun,” Belt says. “Often they become the difference between using

your deck or not.

“When the screens down you can also have your gas heater running and enjoy the

outdoors longer into the evening and in early spring or fall because the heat is more

contained,” he adds.

As well, Belt notes, they are getting more requests for screens to be installed over

garage doors by homeowners who want to use their garage as a patio or a man cave.

by HeatHer Ryan

The Executive Screens are all custom fit to the opening

and can be as large as 25-ft. wide with a 16-ft. drop. They

come in a variety of types and colours – they can also be

custom coloured including a wood grain finish to fit any

exterior – so they’re attractive as well as efficient.

“We just installed three units around a covered deck on

a showhome in southwest Calgary, and we added seven –

four on an upper deck and three on the lower level to a

luxury home in Springbank,” Belt says. “One of our biggest

projects was the installation of nine units to screen in an

eating area at a golf club.”

Installing the Serene screens over windows are a popular

upgrade because they also are available with sunscreen

mesh so “they can keep your home cool in the summer

reducing the need for air conditioning, and they keep it

warmer in the winter so you save on energy costs,” Belt says.

“They also block UV rays reducing the damage sunlight can

do to fine furniture and hardwood floors.

“A lot high-end homes have great rooms with double

height windows and they can really heat up from the sun,

but with a screen in place you can block out that sunlight

so you can use the room in comfort.”

What's new and exciting inOutdoor Living Spaces

The designers and manufactures are working overtime creating new, better and prettier items every day for us to add to outdoor spaces. I spent some time today with Jennifer from Wicker Land Patio discussing the newest items in outdoor furniture and kitchen components. According to Jennifer the latest outdoor living area furniture is the C-shaped sectional, also popular indoors, as opposed to the L-shaped sectionals. Personally I think it has a softer, cozy look and that shape will probably fi t better on some of the curved patios I design and Escapes creates. When it comes to dining room table sets Jennifer says there are extendable tables available now which are perfect for the smaller family that entertains larger groups at times. They also have counter height tables, again similar to indoors. They also have a large selection of fi re tables with either propane or natural gas fi re pits or bowls. The fi re tables are a plus for Calgarians just as the outdoor heaters are as our evenings are so cool despite daytime highs. I have two propane heaters, one on my patio and one on my deck and love them as they really extend the time we can be outdoors. Jennifer said they also have infrared electric heaters for those of you that do not want to be bother with propane or gas.

The Andironack or Muskoka chairs made of 100 per cent recycled materials and with stainless steel hardware are a classic coming in 17 different colours now! I love mine, they are comfortable even without cushions and I leave them outdoors all year round although they are black! I just found out today from Jennifer that they have breathable, weather proof covers for outdoor furniture that I will invest in this year for some pieces. You can mix and match pieces at Wicker Land and choose which of the many Sunbrella fabrics you want your cushions in, creating exactly the look you want!

The demand for outdoor cooking stations or kitchens increases every year. We normally construct them from a precast material using natural stone or concrete for the counters. I was so excited when Barkman Concrete Products came out with a collection of eight prepackaged modular kits that can confi gured in many variations and include everything from built-in burners and barbecues to fridges and cutting stations. These units allow us to give you a custom outdoor gourmet cooking centre like no other! While in Phoenix this winter I found stainless steel outdoor kitchens which always look fabulous in

Jennifer shared that Wicker Land Patio has two displays of barbecue islands in their store and can custom order for you not only those islands but outdoor fridges, drawers & sinks. The components come in stucco, brick or stone with tile, granite or marble counters and options such as under counter lighting and counter top burners for your side dishes! Of course, if you have the space, custom designing and building your outdoor kitchen on site gives you the most options

in custom-designed furniture. Guided by Rossini’s team of experts, Val was able to design a sectional and chair perfectly tailored to meet her needs.

As southern Alberta’s specialist in leather upholstery, Rossini’s Furniture gave Val the opportunity to choose from among hundreds of genuine top grain Italian leather and designer fabric options.

“I was able to feel and handle all the leather samples,” says Val. “I had been worried that I was going to have to order something online without having the chance to see or feel it, so this was a wonderful experience.”

While her new furniture is all about comfort, what is really turning heads is the exquisite pony brindle Val selected to adorn the sectional and chair. Made from genuine calf hair in natural colouration patterns, this unique feature truly makes Val’s furniture one-of-a-kind.

For Todd Markin, sales and marketing manager, Val’s experience exemplifies the dedicated customer care and limitless possibilities clients can expect from Rossini’s Furniture — all at an affordable price.

“Your furniture is just that: your furniture. When you walk into Rossini’s showroom, you are treated to a unique selection of home furnishing you just don’t find at conventional furniture stores,” says Markin. “With a little direction and encouragement we help you become your own designer and create the exact look you are trying to achieve. Your dream room is only limited by your imagination.”

Val couldn’t agree more. Her fully customized sectional and couch has helped transform her basement into the home theatre she’d envisioned: the perfect place to entertain friends, relax with a glass of wine or snuggle up to watch a movie. And, with Rossini’s Furniture’s recent addition of bedroom and dining room products,

Val is already looking forward to bringing that personalized flare to the rest of her home.

“Sometimes just simply refreshing your home furnishings is all that is needed to create the room of your dreams,” says Markin.

“Whatever your custom renovation consists of — whether it’s new flooring or paint or a complete demolition and rebuild — you don’t have to settle for the same old outdated or boring furniture. Be unique. Be creative. Make it yours.”

there was no room in the house left untouched during the massive renovation. The main floor and staircase originally had engineered bamboo flooring, which the family found did not stand up to the rigors of a three-year-old boy and two dogs. It was replaced with a fumed oak plank with a hand planed finish for a rich, aged look, while the entry got a glamourous marble slab floor.

They kept the original kitchen layout, but transformed the dark, confining feel into a bright welcoming style with lighter paint and the addition of new walnut cabinets and honed Calacatta slab countertops. The island was given special attention by adding a stunning waterfall design for dramatic effect. The kitchen also serves up all new professional appliances including a fridge that blends seamlessly into the cabinetry and a stainless steel, built-in wall oven, microwave, wine fridge and hood fan.

One of the most outstanding rooms is the master bedroom, which offers an inviting retreat and a luxurious spa-like ensuite that includes an awesome free-standing tub, walk-in glass shower and long vanity with dual vessel sinks.

Going through the home, you’ll appreciate the added architectural touches to the stairwells, dining room, living room, family room and master bedroom with applied mouldings, panelling and other custom millwork and details, which are defining features in the home. The decorative ceilings, such as the Art Deco-style faux cove ceiling in the dining room, are simply stunning.

The basement is also fully developed in this home including a media room.

The renovations even extended to the backyard where, with the help of a landscape designer, Jacqueline took a very basic inner-city backyard and turned it into an extension of the living area with an outdoor dining area and lounge area, complete with a towering wood-burning stone fireplace and water feature. The backyard won the Alberta Landscaping Award of Excellence in 2011, and the property was featured in Canadian House & Home Magazine’s Best Decorating issue in 2012, on the Alberta Ballet Home and Garden tour in 2010 and also on the Marilyn Denis television show.

Customized to Your LifestyleHVAC control, and much more – all custom designed to meet your lifestyle needs. The offering is something for every homeowner to consider when renovating or building new, and Three 60 believes that they have married the perfect business partners and systems to provide a seamlessly coordinated project.

An important focus for all of Three 60’s projects is the final esthetic, and the ability to leave new and retrofit homes looking elegant and high-tech without 6-gang switch plates (otherwise known as wall acne) throughout the home. Furthermore, the mechanical room becomes an area that homeowners will want to show friends and family where the wireless switches are conveniently housed along with the centralized storage of all of the equipment that brings the home to life. Three 60’s neatness and attention to detail is a great source of pride, with a consistent demonstration of quality of workmanship from start to finish on all projects.

A Three 60 designed system will cater to the lifestyle of each client – imagine lying in bed, knowing your kids have decided to turn their lights on late at night (you will be able to tell without getting up!) and simply pressing an “All Off” button from your control device. If you have your cleaner at home while you’re out, you can check that all systems are off and doors are locked after they have left. Hit the ‘Entertain’ button on your in-wall keypad or mobile device and immediately have lighting optimized for a bright, vibrant setting and your favourite music channelling in high traffic areas. Coming home after a sunny vacation and want to turn the heat back on before you get there? No problem. Run the sprinklers while you are away camping for the weekend? LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2014 [31]

Page 32: Luxury Living in Calgary and Area - Jun., 2014

4) What’s your favourite vacation spot?We go to Maui and Palm Springs a couple of times a year. We love Maui because of its energy and the ocean. Palm Springs is an amazing place. I love being in the desert when it’s -30 C back in Calgary, and it’s close to home so it’s a quick flight to get there.

5) Based on your experience as a Realtor what luxury item/feature do people most want in a home?I see a huge emphasis on people wanting some very unique items. The kitchen gets the most focus because people are looking for high-end features. They want SubZero and Wolf appliances and custom cabinets. But, I also have a number of clients who are car collectors who want the over-size triple garage and others want the ability to put in a wine room and a media room. With larger properties, they want a sports court – I had one client who spent a quarter-million dollars on one. Some want a swimming pool; and even some put in panic rooms. But what they all have in common is they look for ways to customize their home to meet their needs.

6) Has the luxury real estate market grown in Calgary, and why?The luxury market has absolutely grown. This city is energy centred and oil and gas have fuelled the high-end market and brought in people from around the globe who desire luxury homes.

7) Who had the most influence on your life?My wife Jacqueline. We met in high school and we’ve been together 25 years. She’s an interior designer with an impeccable eye, great taste and she really knows quality. She’s a high-end designer so, work-wise, she has taught me a lot about quality. She’s also the most ethical person I know and a smart business person. I’ve learned a lot from her.

8) A book or a movie?I’d love to say book, but with my schedule I’m lucky to catch a movie. I have an amazing media system in my home, but with a seven-year-old son I’ve seen more Treehouse and kids’ shows than movies.

9) What’s your favourite sport to watch?Golf. I play once a week at Priddis and I love to watch it; it helps me unwind. I’m also a Flames fan and have season tickets.

10) What’s the best dish you cook?I love to barbecue. I do it year round regardless of the weather, so my best dish is anything on the barbecue. One of my hobbies is sailing and I even barbecue on the boat.

10 Questions with Sam Corea

Calgary RealtoR® Sam Corea is celebrating 20 years with Re/MaX House of Realty. He

specializes in luxury properties; his average sale price is $943,000 and he sold 128 homes last year – that’s one home every 68 hours.

builderQ&a

1)What do you love most about Calgary?I was born and raised in Calgary so it’s home to me and I watched it grow from a small town to a big city. I love how it’s a young, vibrant city, with such high energy and that my friends and family live close by. Where I live is where I work – I work within a five kilometre radius – so that makes it special.

2) Which community do you live in and what makes it attractive to you?I was born in Altadore and that’s where I live. It’s such an great community and it’s interesting because of how it’s changed over the years. Homes were $80,000 when I was born and now lots go for $800,000 and some homes sell around the $2 million mark. It’s really been an extreme change and the prices keep going up every year. But the community has maintained its vibrancy. I’m selling my Altadore home now, because we want a larger home, but I won’t move very far away.

3) What’s the most unique or largest home you have ever sold?About 12 years ago I got a call from a bank holding a mortgage for a home in Turner Valley; it was a 10,000-sq.-ft. house on 100 acres and it was priced over $1 million, which was unheard of for the area at that time. It was very unique because it was so ahead of its time. It overlooked the Sheep River and was very high end. That property would probably go for $4 to $5 million now.

LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2014 [35]

Page 36: Luxury Living in Calgary and Area - Jun., 2014

“With our winters being so long and summers so short, we don’t always get to enjoy the back yard that long before it’s too cold outside,” says Jeff Wyndham, co-owner of Calgary’s Four Seasons Sunrooms. “A sunroom really allows you to enjoy the outdoors year-round; it brings the outdoors indoors and adds to your quality of life and even your health as it brings the sunlight in.

“Sitting in the comfort of your sunroom and watching the snow fall on a quiet winter’s evening really gives you a tranquil feeling,” he says, adding it’s a lifestyle that homeowners’ cherish.

A big benefit to a sunroom is it allows you to enjoy your property without worrying if it’s too windy, hot, cold, buggy or rainy outside; you can be inside surrounded in your glassed-in sunroom and feel like you’re sitting outside.

“Also if you’ve spent a lot of time, money and energy on your landscaping, or if you have a scenic view, most times you can’t enjoy it once you move inside and close the door,” Wyndham says. “So adding a sunroom means you can enjoy your hard work or that picturesque setting anytime.”

Four Seasons can add a sunroom to any home and there are a number of different product lines that offer a variety of styles and sizes that meet most people’s budgets.

“We deliver a high quality product and have a long list of styles available in our collection,” he says, noting that people can choose from different models, but they also do custom-built sunrooms, so homeowners can get them in any size, and they can get upgraded features such as fireplaces, high-end finishings and in-floor heating.

“The most popular designs made of wood are Victorian and Georgian conservatories and we see that trend continuing into 2014,” he adds. “But homeowners can choose from aluminum, vinyl or wood interiors and between aluminum or vinyl exteriors.

The Four Seasons sunrooms also come with an exclusive tempered glass that features a protective coating so the rooms are cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, he says.

“Sunrooms are totally versatile,” he says. “The majority we add are off the kitchen because that’s typically where people gather and entertain and a lot of homeowners like to extend the kitchen space.” But they’re also used as garden rooms, home offices, sitting or family rooms and hot tub areas.

“Adding a sunroom is definitely a luxury item and we build a number of high-end sunrooms on some of the finest homes and acreages in Calgary and area,” Wyndham says. “We have installed a number of them to $1-million-plus homes; people who are spending a lot of money to have a luxury home see the value in adding a sunroom because it extends their enjoyment of their home, plus they’re increasing the footprint of their home so they see it as an investment.”

One of the most expensive sunroom additions Four Seasons did was to a home in Springbank that cost about $400,000. “It was a huge multi-level home and we actually were replacing an atrium. It

LUXURY LIVING SUMMER 2014 [39]

Calgary has some of the fi nest brands of hotels in the world. With the newly opened Aloft Calgary University, a vision from the W brand, the new luxe of boutique-style indulgence and contemporary chic has arrived. In distinct contrast, the Fairmont Palliser, one of the city’s oldest and most prestigious, marks 2014 by celebrating 100 years of hotel luxury.

With these two luxury brands, it’s not simply a contrast of old versus new. It brings more options for luxury, more to appeal to the wants and lifestyle expectations of guests.

The Fairmont Palliser may be 100, and the benchmark for luxury is certainly different now than it was in 1914, but this gorgeous Grande Dame of the city’s hospitality scene has kept up with modern innovation, bringing its decor, offerings and amenities into the height of each new era.

The Palliser is sophisticated and elegant. It defi nes traditional luxury and elegant comforts, where Aloft’s appeal capitalizes on the ‘cool’ factor and edgy style. The Fairmont Palliser is steeped in historical relevance, Aloft’s cachet is in its modernism and hip, tech-savvy vibe.

Prestige comes in many levels. The front desk of the Fairmont Palliser is fi ne for checking in to most of this hotel’s offering of sumptuous suites. But taking luxury to the next level, the Palliser offers its guests the Fairmont Gold Club and Fairmont Presidents Club. An upgrade not to be missed by those in the know, an elite clique pays for preferential treatment including an exclusive boutique lobby in the penthouse, with a breathtaking view clear to the mountains. Guests are treated to additional comforts, from upgraded suites and hospitality gifts to WiFi, food and a bar to help unwind and start their stay. With renovations to the tune of $11 million in 2011, the Gold Club is also cutting edge, with elements like larger rooms, new fi xtures and phone chargers next to beds.

The vibe at Aloft indulges in a different way – it’s the social scene and the action. The open-concept design lets energy fl ow. The video wall and digital scrolling news ticker-tapes keep information fl owing, too. This is a crowd that’s always plugged in. It’s distinct from the soaring ceiling and opulent chandelier of the Palliser’s main lobby.

Relaxing and unwinding doesn’t mean shutting down and turning off. WiFi is free throughout Aloft. The lobby features touch-n-go kiosks so that there’s no need for waiting or lines to the counter while checking in or out.

The Palliser has many well-heeled spaces. The art and history can’t be missed. The Crystal Ballroom and Canadian Pacifi c Ballroom are renowned for their splendour. Events in these spaces cater to a refi ned crowd. The Pavilion has a glass domed ceiling and a +15 to where the trains are stored – a signifi cant part of Calgary’s history, as the Palliser was built right on the railway line to connect the city with outlying communities.

What Aloft doesn’t have in history, it makes up for in hipness. Pet owners can indulge their pampered

pooches. ARF – the pet-friendly program for dogs – features an Aloft bed and bowl, plus some ‘woof-alicious’ treats and toys. The buzz at the Palliser is no less intriguing. Literally. With its two bee hives managed by local beekeepers, the Palliser has its own honey, a treat served in the Oak Room.

Aloft is a stage. Music, innovation and life take part, infusing a community element into the hotel. Their commitment to local talent and promoting unsigned artists has serious appeal to the new music scene. And building on its digital vibe, Aloft has created a multichannel platform. Guests can enjoy the music and respond online.

While the Indie scene flourishes at Aloft, the Palliser has seen a most notable list of guests pass through their halls, from Hillary Clinton and Oprah Winfrey to Sophia Lauren and, of course, HM Queen Elizabeth and HRH, Prince Philip. Marilyn Manson, Bill Cosby, Brad and Angelina and more fame and fanfare have stayed there, too. In fact, for many years, the Palliser was home to Canada’s 11th Prime Minister, The Right Honourable R.B. Bennett.

Aloft has just opened its doors, and Calgary residents and visitors have given it a warm welcome. The Fairmont Palliser, now celebrating 100 years of hospitality, has started up the festivities. Trademark crafts luxury renovations

trademark renovations’ passion to provide quality workmanship and customer satisfaction has resulted in not only winning the Consumer Choice Award five consecutive years, but having many homeowners trust it to craft their high-end renovation projects.

“Our customer service is something we’re proud of,” says Blair Foisy,

owner and president of Trademark Renovations. “Receiving the Consumer

Choice Awards is important to us because it’s voted on by real people

and I think it says we’re doing something right, that we’re offering quality

work and service that people want.”

Trademark’s emphasis on quality, transparency, value and customer

service has resulted in many repeat customers and over the years; a

consistent 72 per cent plus of its business is derived through referrals.

“That tells us people are so proud of their home and the job we did,

they talk about it with people and refer us to those who need a reno or want

a custom build,” Foisy says. “We want our customers to be happy when the

job is done and that we’ve met their expectations and beyond.”

Among their long list of satisfied customers are the owners of a 1940s

inner-city bungalow. Trademark first undertook a complete interior and

exterior renovation to the home in 2009, updating everything from the

siding and cabinetry to the plumbing and electrical.

The homeowners loved their fresh and modern design, but as the

family grew they needed more space and sought out Trademark once

again to add two storeys while preserving the original renovations.

Trademark spent the next nine months transforming the modest

two-bedroom, one-bath bungalow into a magnificent three-bedroom,

two-bath multi-storey home. But what makes this house spectacular is

the addition of an ultimate playroom that encompasses the entire third

floor providing ample space for toys, games and to have friends over. And,

during the summer months, the family can relax on the adjoining third-

storey deck.

More importantly, Trademark designed this room with an eye to the

future by including plumbing rough-ins, so it can easily be converted into

a media room and wet bar — enabling the house to keep up with the family’s

changing needs.

“It may have started out as a small bungalow, but we transformed

into a fabulous open, modern three-storey home and the owners love it,”

Foisy comments.

With more than 30 years’ experience in building and renovating Calgary’s

luxury custom homes, Trademark Renovations can help every homeowner

bring their unique vision to life — whether that’s updating a kitchen ,

building an addition, developing a basement, doing a complete makeover

or building new.

“Luxury homeowners want to make their home unique and personalized;

they want to incorporate high-end products and that’s where we shine,”

Foisy explains. “We do all styles of fully customized renovations from

traditional to contemporary, or build that luxury dream home. To put it

simply, we love what we do.”

When deciding which landscape company to hire, it’s benefi cial to do your research.

Landscape luxury

systems are an excellent way to conserve water and reduce your yard maintenance. This will allow home owners to maximize the amount of water their landscape requires. An irrigation system is a far more effective way to provide your yard the water it craves, as opposed to running the sprinkler for a few hours.

Custom woodwork is one of many options to incorporate into your landscape. Decks, Pergolas, Fences, Retaining walls can all be built a number of different ways. Like most aspects of Landscape construction choosing the right material is key. Your options include Spruce which can be used for decks and fences but is a lower grade lumber and typically requires a solid or semi solid paint or stain. Pressure Treated is another great option which is Spruce or Pine chemically treated with wood preservatives. This provides the lumber with protection from the elements and provides greater longevity of your wood. Pressure Treated lumber is excellent for retaining walls and fences. Cedar is strongly recommended for decks, pergolas and privacy screens/walls. It withstands our climate and has an extraordinary natural beauty. Cedar needs to be treated with stain or oil to prevent the wood from turning grey. Cedar requires more maintenance than your other options but the sacri ce we feel is worth it. You should expect to stain your cedar deck every other year depending on sun exposure, traf c, pets and usage. Kayu is also an option for homeowners craving that high end deck. It is an exotic hardwood that is used throughout the world on docks, ships and many high traf c areas. Kayu withstands all weather conditions and is a perfect complement to any landscape.

Quality craftsmanship in woodwork is as important as the product you are choosing.

Many landscape companies do not address all aspects of landscaping. Find a landscape company that will complete the task from start to nish and handle any subcontracting required. Remember that there are many different approaches to outdoor projects. The nal result will fall between what you can plan and budget for and what your landscaper is capable of creating.

When deciding which landscape company to hire, it’s bene cial to do your research. Ask to see their portfolio, view their website, and look into some of the products yourself. Most importantly ask lots of questions. Landscape construction can be done very different. Hire a company who use quality equipment, utilize the best products available and have it installed professionally.
