    FourastonishingmonumentscomposetheDuomo

complex:theCathedralofSantaMariaDelFiore, theGiottoBell Tower, the Baptistery and the Brunelleschi Dome.LocatedinPiazzaSanGiovanni, intheheartofFlorence, thecomplex istheresultofcenturiesofworkrealizedbythegreatestItalianarchitects, sculptorsandpainters.

The History of the Duomo starts on the 8th ofSeptember1296,withtheplacementofthefirststoneofthecathedral.TheCathedralofSantaMariadelFiorewascommissioned by the commune of Florence to replaceSantaReparata, thepreviousbasilicaof Florence.Giottostarted constructionof thebell tower in1334,after thebodyofBishopStZenobiuswasfoundinSantaReparata,.WhenGiottodied(hisbodywasburied inthecathedral),many eminent architects continued his vision andcompleted the bell tower in 1359. At the same time, constructionofthecathedralcontinuedwithgreateffortsof resources and talents: sculptors and artists such asDonatello orNanni ilBartolo (known as the Red) addedtheircreations to thecathedraland to thebell tower; in1420,FilippoBrunelleschiopenedtheconstructionsiteofthe Dome. The cathedral, instead, was solemnlyinaugurated in1439.Michelangelowascommissioned tocarvethetwelvestatuesoftheApostlesforthechapel in

1503andGiorgioVasari,from1572totheyearofhisdeathin1579,startedthedepictionoftheLastJudgmentintheDome.Aftercenturiesofimprovementsandretouches,thisnever endingmasterpiece came to uswith a lot of theoriginalworkspreservedinthemuseumoftheOperaoftheDuomo, whichcontainsmostoftheoriginalpartsthemajormonumentsofthecomplex.

Suchalonghistoryusuallybringsmanystoriesandlegends. One of the curiositiesworth mentioning is thebad relation of the complex with lightning storms. In1492, lightning seriously damaged the Dome and theFlorentines immediately considered this as a bad signthatpresagedthedeathofLorenzotheMagnificentthreedayslater.Anotherthunderepisodehappenedonenightin1601,whenthecopperballandthecrossonthehighestpoint of the Dome realized by Verrocchio was hit bylightningandtornoff.Thelegendsaysthattheballhittheground sohard thatallofFlorencewaswokenupandahugecrowdgatheredinthepointwheretheballfelldown.Thatpoint isrememberednowadayswithawhitemarbleplateplaceddirectlyonthegroundofSanGiovannisquare.

LaPortaDelParadiso(Heavensdoor),oneofthemonumental doors of the Baptistery and so called byMichelangelo for itsbeauty, givesus another interestingstory. Realized by the sculptor and goldsmith LorenzoGhiberti, thisdoorrepresentsthemainstoriesoftheBible.Despite the importance and the solemnity of thismasterpiece,Ghibertidecidedtocarvehisselfportrait inthedoorasasignature.HeaddedalsotheportraitofhismasterandfosterfatherBartoluccio.

"Outsidemafia groups have operated in Rome for along time.Therehavealwaysbeen representativesofallthe clans," said Raffaele Cantone, the president of theNationalAntiCorruptionAuthority.

In a separate investigation, a member of America'snotoriousGambinomafiafamilywasarrestedintheUnitedStates on the request of Italian authorities.
