1. ISO 9001: 2000

• Specifies the requirements for a quality management system,

providing assurance about the ability to satisfy quality

requirements and aims to enhance customer satisfaction in

supplier-customer relationships.

• ISO 9001:2000 is the standard that provides a set of

standardized requirements for a quality management

system, regardless of what the user organization does, its size,

or whether it is in the private, or public sector.

• Without satisfied customers, an organization is in peril! To keep

customers satisfied, the organization needs to meet their

requirements. The ISO 9001:2000 standard provides a tried

and tested framework for taking a systematic approach to

managing the organization's processes so that they consistently

turn out product that satisfies customers' expectations.

The organization may engage the services of an independent

quality system certification body to obtain an ISO 9001:2000

certificate of conformity. This option has proved extremely popular in

the market-place because of the perceived credibility of an

independent assessment.

The production sites of the Turbon Group are ISO 9001

Certified, by an external organisation.

The benefits:

-> Quality and Service consistency

-> Quality Management System operating effectively and in

conformity with the Standard

Certifications

ISO standards that provide requirements or give guidance on good

management practice are among the best known of ISO's offering.

Of these, two have achieved truly global status and are now thoroughly

integrated with the world economy: The ISO 9001 and the ISO 14001.

2. ISO 14001: 2004

Specifies the requirements for an environmental management

system. Fulfilling these requirements demands objective evidence

which can be audited to demonstrate that the environmental

management system is operating effectively in conformity to the

standard.

ISO 14001:2004 is a management tool enabling an organization of

any size or type to: identify and control the environmental impact of

its activities, products or services; to improve its environmental

performance continually; and to implement a systematic approach

to setting environmental objectives and targets, to achieving these

and to demonstrating that they have been achieved.

The intention of ISO 14001:2004 is to provide a framework for a

holistic, strategic approach to the organization's environmental

policy, plans and actions.

ISO 14001:2004 gives the generic requirements for an

environmental management system. The underlying philosophy is

that whatever the organization's activity, the requirements of an

effective EMS are the same.

The Turbon sites are Certified to the standards of the

environmental management system ISO14001:2004 by

an external organisation .

The collection and remanufacturing processes comply to the strict

criteria of the standard required for environmentally friendly

production.

Within the certified companies there are clear responsibilities and

processes regarding duly use and disposal of materials.

The benefits:

-> Environmental Management System operating

effectively and in conformity to the standard

-> Documented disposal of unusable parts to fulfil

internationally established and required environmental standards

3. Nordic Swan

The Nordic Ecolabel's goal is a sustainable society through sustainable consumerism. To be

able to reach that goal it is important that more consumers choose ecolabelled products.

On November 6th 1989 the Nordic Council of Ministers decided to introduce the Nordic

Ecolabel for the Nordic countries. 20 years later it has become one of the most well-known

Ecolabels in the world.

This is done by a voluntary license system where the applicant agrees to follow a certain

criteria set outlined by the Nordic Ecolabelling in cooperation with stakeholders. These

criteria include environmental, quality and health arguments.

The Nordic Ecolabel checks that products fulfill certain criteria using methods such as

samples from independent laboratories, certificates and control visits.

The label is usually valid for three years, after which the criteria are revised and the

company must reapply for a license. In this way, it is ensured that products better suited to

the environment are constantly being developed.

Lyreco Laser Cartridges are produced in accordance to the strict Nordic

Ecolabelling directives.

The use of the “Nordic Swan” label is restricted to manufacturers who

can prove that their production methods conform to the strict

environmental criteria demanded by certification authorities.

3. Nordic Swan (contd.)

The criteria for the production of Remanufactured Laser Cartridges according to

Nordic Swan:

Toner cartridges certified with the Nordic Swan are remanufactured cartridges. Empty

cartridges are collected from users, they are dismantled, cleaned, reassembled with new

and reused parts.

Each cartridge is quality tested before it leaves the factory, and at regular intervals sample

cartridges are “life tested” to measure the page yield and to make sure that the print quality

is kept at a high level throughout the life time of the cartridge.

Swan-labeled toner cartridge have at least the same print quality and page yield as new

original cartridges, but they are better for the environment and cost less than originals.

The waste toner powder and other waste is collected and disposed of according to

local/national environmental legislation.

The toner powder is not harmful to health, neither does it contain any substances that are

dangerous for the environment.

In order to hold the Ecolabelling / Nordic Swan certification, all Turbon production sites

have NEN-EN-ISO 9001:2000 certification.

The benefits:

-> Combining highest quality with environment and health

-> Internationally accepted certification

4. BG

Certification marks for safe, health-friendly productsCertification marks from independent testing and certification

bodies such as BG-PRÜFZERT confirm certain product

characteristics. The BG-PRÜFZERT mark issued by BG-

PRÜFZERT bodies certify that safety and health requirements

have been satisfied.

Certification marks: excellent selection aidsBuyers often find it difficult to judge the safety of a product

correctly. Certification marks such as the BG-PRÜFZERT mark is

a good way of helping them choose a product that they know will

be safe. The BG-PRÜFZERT testing and certification bodies and

their good reputation are the guarantee that the product does

comply with the requirements.

The services performed by the testing and certification bodies

have an even further-reaching, long-term effect: the information

shared with manufacturers results in safe, health-friendly

products. This effect is repeatedly confirmed by the manufacturers

themselves and by studies.

To be awarded the BG mark, a product has to undergo

comprehensive type testing by a BG-PRÜFZERT testing and

certification body. The tests determine whether the product

complies with the safety and health requirements. A key part of

the certification programme is product inspection, which ensures

that the mark is not abused.

The BG-mark on a product is a symbol of safety - an

advantage for any buyer.

The Lyreco laser cartridges for HP LJ 1600/2600 (BK,

C, M, Y) have been awarded the BG Certificate.

The toner powder used in these cartridges has been tested for

harmful substances.

5. STMC

STMC stands for the Standardized Test Methods Committee.

This global committee was formed to find and promote standardized

test methods for the printer cartridge industry.

The test methods are used to evaluate toner printer cartridges

performance. Standardized test methods make it possible to

evaluate a cartridge anywhere and come up with the same test

results no matter who tests it.

The end-user needs a way to compare the value of the various

offers of remanufactured and OEM cartridges. Above all, everyone

in this chain needs an accurate and reliable way to describe the

performance of their product to the next link in the distribution chain.

The answer to these needs is STMC.

Standardized tests do not specify how a cartridge must perform;

they only measure it.

A company that is STMC certified is one that has had their

employees successfully trained by an authorized trainer in these

test methods, attests to using these test methods, and has

purchased the correct test equipment.

Vendors can use the test methods in their test cartridges and

provide the results to potential buyers, but that does not make the

purchaser STMC certified.

Certified companies can use that in their literature.

STMC uses certain ISTA and ASTM test methods, such as ASTM F

1856 for toner consumption, and ASTM F 2036 for image density

and background. Neither of these tests is used to evaluate toner,

drums, PCRs, mag sleeves, etc. The test methods are used to

evaluate a finished cartridge in comparison to another cartridge,

typically an OEM cartridge.

The bottom line is that every printer cartridge remanufacturer is

encouraged to become certified to make our industry stronger and

more quality and value conscious.

The Turbon Group is STMC Certified.

6. ISO 19752:2004

Method for the determination of toner cartridge yield for monochromatic

electrophotographic printers and multi-function devices that contain

printer components

ISO/IEC 19752:2004 is limited to evaluation of toner cartridge yield for toner containing

cartridges (i.e. all-in-one toner cartridges and toner cartridges without a photoconductor) for

monochrome electrophotographic printers.

ISO/IEC 19752:2004 is only intended for the measurement of toner cartridge yield.

In 2005 testing criteria according to the ISO 19752 method were

established at all production plants of Lyreco Laser Cartridges to

determine the cartridges yield where applicable.

This internationally valid standard was created with the support of several Original

Equipment Manufacturers, such as Canon, HP, Epson and Lexmark, and defines

procedures and test areas for monochrome laser cartridges page yield measurement.

Until then, printer manufacturers had used a variety of methodologies to measure toner

yield, making it challenging for customers to accurately compare yield measurements from

leading suppliers.

Some companies used ISO 10561,(Dr. Grauert letter) which was accepted by the industry,

but there was no information about what the OEMs were using, apart from knowing that

their testing methods were based on a 5% coverage test page.

The commitments demanded by ISO 19752 expand on ISO 10561 by agreeing on a new

and consistent standard print test to measure cartridge page yields by simulating current

modern print requirements including diagrams, drawings, logos and standard print.

6. ISO 19752:2004 (contd.)

Technically Robust Testing Criteria:

• Standard test document: Use of a standard page printed in a controlled environment

with printer default settings;

• Number of cartridges tested: A minimum of 9 of each cartridge is tested until they stop

printing, allowing reliable estimates of lowest predicted yield with 90 percent statistical

confidence;

• Source for cartridges: Cartridges and printers used represent those available to

customers on the open market;

• Clear, objective, end-of-life criteria: Determines cartridge yield through measurements

that establish an end-of-life criterion;

• Number of printers: A minimum of 3 cartridges are tested on 3 different printers to avoid

bias due to printer variability;

• Controlled environment: Printing environment is controlled and consistent because

temperature and humidity variations affect yield;

• Objectivity: Because of worldwide and industry-wide participation, the testing criteria

reflect objectivity in developing a reliable and rigorous standard.

The test results are documented at Lyreco Laser Cartridges production

plants.

More details of the ISO standard can be accessed on the ISO website www.iso.org.

The benefits:

-> Practical and reliable yield test methodology

-> Helps customers to more objectively and accurately evaluate cartridge yields

7. ISO 19798:2007 and ISO 24712

Method for the determination of toner cartridge yield for colour printers

and multi-function devices that contain printer components

ISO/IEC 19798:2007 defines a method for testing and calculation of average yield

measured in the number of standard pages for a colour toner cartridge and specific printer,

printing in a semi-continuous mode under a defined set of conditions. It uses the test page

suite defined in ISO/IEC 24712.

ISO/IEC 19798:2007 is only intended for the measurement of colour toner cartridge yield.

The test suite is not focused on printing of photographs, but is intended to be a sampling of

typical office consumer pages.

In 2007, testing criteria according to ISO 19798 and ISO 24712 Standards

were established at all Lyreco Laser Cartridges production plants to

define the yields of our Colour Laser Cartridges.

7. ISO 19798:2007 and ISO 24712 (contd.)

Technically Robust Testing Criteria:

• Standard test document: Use of standard pages printed in a controlled environment

with printer default settings. These test pages are separately defined on ISO 24712;

• Test setup: All printer settings set to factory pre-set configuration;

• Number of cartridges tested: A minimum of 9 cartridge sets are tested until they stop

printing, allowing reliable estimates of lowest predicted yield with 90 percent statistical

confidence;

• Source for cartridges: Cartridges and printers used represent those available to

customers on the open market;

• Clear, objective, end-of-life criteria: Determines cartridge yield through measurements

that establish an end-of-life criterion;

• Number of printers: A minimum of 9 cartridges sets are tested on 3 different printers to

avoid bias due to printer variability. An equal number of cartridge sets must be tested on

each printer;

• Controlled environment: Printing environment is controlled and consistent because

temperature and humidity variations affect yield;

• Objectivity: Because of worldwide and industry-wide participation, the testing criteria

reflect objectivity in developing a reliable and rigorous standard.

The test results are documented at Lyreco Laser Cartridges production

plants.

ISO/IEC 24712:2007

Colour test pages for measurement of office equipment consumable

yield

ISO/IEC 24712:2007 defines colour test pages for the measurement of consumable yield.

The test page suite includes four "customer" type documents and one "diagnostic" page

that is used to determine end of ink or toner consumable life.

ISO/IEC 24712:2007 provides a set of test pages in a common file format that would be

used in the testing of consumable yield. The procedure for using these pages is detailed in

ISO/IEC 19798 and ISO/IEC 24711.

These pages are intended to represent some of the document types that are used in the

office and home. They are not intended to represent special applications such as photo

printing.

8. Safety Information Sheets according to the

EC 1907/2006 Regulation (REACH)

REACH is the Regulation on Registration, Evaluation,

Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It entered

into force on 1st June 2007 and everything that comes

into the scope of REACH must be registered by 2018. It

streamlines and improves the former legislative

framework on chemicals of the European Union (EU).

The main aims of REACH are to ensure a high level of

protection of human health and the environment from the

risks that can be posed by chemicals, the promotion of

alternative test methods, the free circulation of substances

on the internal market and enhancing competitiveness and

innovation.

REACH makes industry responsible for assessing and

managing the risks posed by chemicals and providing

appropriate safety information to their users. In parallel, the

European Union can take additional measures on highly

dangerous substances, where there is a need for

complementing action at EU level.

The law covers producers and importers of chemicals, as

well as any other user within the supply chain.

Products do not need to be registered; however they may

contain single substances which do come within the scope of

REACH.

The Turbon Group has been evaluating REACH

requirements regarding all products offered and are

therefore in close contact with raw materials suppliers to

request the registrations where applicable.

8. Safety Information Sheets according to the EC 1907/2006 Regulation(REACH) (contd.)

NEW Safety Information Sheets, in accordance with the Regulation (EC) 1907/2006

REACH, are now available and replace the previous MSDSs for each laser cartridge of the

Lyreco range.

The Safety Information Sheets give you important information regarding environment and

health compatibility as well as security advice for the use of a product. Criteria of content

which are mentioned on this sheet are settled by EU-Rules.

Development & Production standards

The benefits:

-> Traceable security information for each product, for health and environment

protection.

Page 17: Lyreco Laser Cartridges€¢ISO 19752:2004 •ISO 19798/24712 •ISTA –Droptest •DIN 33870 •ISO 10561 •AMES Test •Archive Standard ... have been awarded the BG Certificate

10. ISTA - Droptest

ISTA Performance Tests result in a Pass/Fail assessment and are

used to determine the viability of a packaged-product to survive normal

shipment.

This test method pretends a drop test according to which a packed item

falls from a certain level of height, on the edges of the packaging. This

so called ”drop test” ensures the transport security of Lyreco laser

cartridges.

The benefits:

-> Ensures Lyreco Laser Cartridges transport security

-> Packaging Development takes this test into consideration

Development & Production standards

9. AMES Test

The Ames test is a biological assay to assess the mutagenic potential

of chemical compounds. A positive test indicates that the chemical

might act as a carcinogen. As cancer is often linked to DNA damage,

the test also serves as a quick assay to estimate the carcinogenic

potential of a compound since it is difficult to ascertain whether

standard carcinogen assays on rodents were successful.

The procedure is described in a series of papers from the early 1970s

by Bruce Ames and his group at the University of California, Berkeley.

A positive result in an Ames test does not indicate by itself that a

particular chemical is capable of causing cancer. It does suggest that a

chemical can produce mutations and that more extensive testing is

needed to determine whether the chemical is likely to produce cancer

in humans. The test is useful as a screening tool for setting priorities

because it is an inexpensive and quick way to help single out chemicals

that should be targeted for further testing. It is also used in industry as

a primary preventive approach to eliminate potential carcinogens early

in the process of developing new commercial chemicals.

For the toner formulations used in the Lyreco laser cartridges, the

results of AMES-tests were negative. It means that in the toner

formulations of the Lyreco laser cartridges no substances are used

which could harm human genotype.

The benefits:

-> A proof that our laser cartridges are not harmful for the human

genotype

Page 18: Lyreco Laser Cartridges€¢ISO 19752:2004 •ISO 19798/24712 •ISTA –Droptest •DIN 33870 •ISO 10561 •AMES Test •Archive Standard ... have been awarded the BG Certificate

11. ISO 10561

Method for measuring throughput -- Class 1 and Class 2 printers

Until some years ago, printer manufacturers have used a variety of methodologies to

measure toner yield, making it challenging for customers to accurately compare yield

measurements from leading suppliers.

Some companies used ISO 10561, which was accepted by the industry, but there was no

information about what the OEMs were using, apart from knowing that their testing

methods were based on a 5% coverage test page.

According to the ISO 10561 standard, the page yield of each cartridge is analysed in terms

of fertility and quality of the print image. The pattern is the ”Dr. Grauert Brief”, a fictitious

sample letter written in standard typewriter script.

The Turbon Group uses ISO 10561 for the older cartridges, where the ISO 19752 does

not apply (old printers) and/or for the brands that did not adopt ISO 19752 as a yield

test methodology.

Development & Production standards

Page 19: Lyreco Laser Cartridges€¢ISO 19752:2004 •ISO 19798/24712 •ISTA –Droptest •DIN 33870 •ISO 10561 •AMES Test •Archive Standard ... have been awarded the BG Certificate

12. DIN 33870

Requirements and test for the preparation of refilled

toner modules for electrophotographical printers,

copiers and facsimile machines

DIN standard is an international standard for quality and reliability of

manufacturing cartridges.

DIN 33870 standard ensures a perfect print quality while meeting

the requirements of standards of environmental protection in the

manufacture of our cartridges.

DIN 33870 standard lays down criteria for the composition, storage,

packaging and labeling of toner cartridges and toner.

All toner cartridges supplied by Turbon comply with

this standard.

To satisfy DIN 33870 requirements toner modules are subjected to

extensive tests and must fulfill stringent conditions. The tests begin

with examinations for genetically harmful effects, toner adhesion,

yield, test in climate chambers, obligatory declaration of contents

and appropriate safety instructions.

Each cartridge bears a barcode label, so that it is possible to identify

when the cartridge was produced, which toner batch it is filled with

and which operator produced it.

Each cartridge has to undergo exhaustive tests. The basis for

comparing test values is the results per type of five original

cartridges made by the printer manufacturers.

All Turbon cartridges comply stringently with the

requirements of DIN 33870. In fact they go even

further: The standards by which the Turbon products

are manufactured are even stricter than those of DIN

33870.

Development & Production standards

13. Archive Standard

To warrant that the printed image can be recognized even after long periods of storage

the Turbon Group asked the German institute Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS) to perform

tests with certain products which simulate environmental influences.

The focus of the tests lies on the toner fixation and the quality of the printed image.

The procedures are focussed on:

-Pressure by mechanical devices (rubber)

-Influence of chemical fluids ( e.g. spiritus, acetone)

-Fixation of toner

o by the use of adhesive tape

o by wiping tests

o by folding the printed paper

-Simulation of long storage periods (aging)

Lyreco Laser Cartridges fulfil the criteria to perform print outs on laser

devices which meet the standard of sustainability for creation and

recording of notary documents.

14. RoHS and WEEE

The RoHS directive aims to restrict certain dangerous substances

commonly used in electronic and electronic equipment. Any RoHS

compliant component is tested for the presence of Lead (Pb),

Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), Hexavalent chromium (Hex-Cr),

Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and Polybrominated diphenyl ethers

(PBDE).

RoHS, also known as Lead-Free, stands for Restriction of

Hazardous Substances.

RoHS, also known as Directive 2002/95/EC, originated in the

European Union and restricts the use of six hazardous materials found

in electrical and electronic products. All applicable products in the EU

market after July 1, 2006 must pass RoHS compliance. RoHS impacts

the entire electronics industry.

Any business that sells applicable electrical or electronic products,

sub-assemblies or components directly to RoHS countries, or sells to

resellers, distributors or integrators that in turn sell products to these

countries, is impacted if they utilize any of the restricted materials.

This Directive is closely linked with the Waste Electrical and

Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC which

mandates the treatment, recovery and recycling of electric and

electronic equipment (90% ends up in landfills). All applicable products

in the EU market must pass WEEE compliance and carry the

"Wheelie Bin" sticker.

Those companies should establish an infrastructure for collecting

WEEE, in such a way that "Users of electrical and electronic

equipment from private households should have the possibility of

returning WEEE at least free of charge". Also, the companies are

compelled to use the collected waste in an ecologically-friendly

manner, either by ecological disposal or by reuse/refurbishment of the

collected WEEE.

The Turbon Group declares that all the replacement parts used

in the laser toner cartridges range of products supplied by us

fulfill the RoHS requirements as defined in RoHS 2002/95/EC.

Similarly, The Turbon Group also declares that laser toner

cartridge products supplied by us comply with WEEE

requirements of the directive WEEE 2002/96/EC.

15. Zero Waste Concept

The Turbon Group and Lyreco are determined to minimize the amount of

material which ends up in landfill.

In addition to being one of the world’s largest remanufacturer of laser toner

cartridges, the Turbon Group is further developing its “Green” credentials

by devising systems for recycling materials and components that would

otherwise end up as waste.

The empty toner cartridge is the essential starting point for the

remanufacturing process. Turbon has worldwide schemes for collecting

the empty cartridges and within its factories in Thailand, Romania and the

USA, these empty cartridges are carefully disassembled into their

component parts.

Certain components are automatically replaced with new ones, but other

non-critical components are carefully cleaned and inspected to check

whether they can be re-used. Wherever possible Turbon will re-use the

cleaned component, provided always that the quality of the re-used

component will not detract from Turbon’s enviable reputation for the quality

of its finished products.

Inevitably in such a process there is a percentage of components that

cannot be re-used. In Turbon’s case around 10 % of all empty cartridges

are rejected. Added to this are the components which are replaced in the

finished cartridges, and the two together represent by weight around 30 %

of the collected cartridges.

The re-usable waste can be broken down essentially into 3 basic

ingredients, namely aluminium, steel and plastic.

The entire quantity of rejected plastic components is ground into

molecules for use in the manufacture of plastic products with low melt flow

indices.

The steel and aluminium components are forwarded to the metal

manufacturers for blending into their production processes.

The total of the components which cannot be used is approximately 7 %

with the main ingredient being the toner powder.

The Group is actively seeking uses for the waste toner powder, but

meanwhile it disposes of the powder to certified waste management

companies under license.
