Tikkun Olam – “Repairing the World”No one knows for sure how God created the world. According to a book which is the
earliest extant book on Jewish esotericism called Sefer Yetizrah or Book of
Creation, this is what happened: In the beginning there was only God. God was in all
time and space and the light of God filled all that was.
When God decided to create the world, there was no place in which to do so –
because God was everywhere. So to create the universe, God had to pull back and
make a space where there was no God; to build a barrier between the light and the
space. This act of pulling back was called tzimtzum. In that space, the heavens and
earth and all that is, was formed. Yet now, in all of heaven and earth, there was no
God. So creation had to move into phase two, as God let some of this divine light
into the space.
Sefer Yetzirah says that God breathed a little light back in – as exhaling and
inhaling. This was called hitpashut. Special containers called kaylim (vessels) were
prepared to hold the light. But something went wrong. There was a cosmic accident.
We don’t know how or why. The universe was then filled with nitzotzot (sparks of
God’s light) and klipot (broken pieces of the kaylim). The accident was called
sh’virat hakaylim (the shattering of the vessels).
The world in which we live is filled with klipot – broken pieces of what should be a
beautiful existence. But our world also still has the nitzotzot – the sparks of God’s
light. The Sefer Yetzirah tells us that one of our reasons for livings as Jews is to
gather the sparks of God’s light and to do Tikkun Olam – repair the world – to be
God’s partner in completing creation.
The Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam is defined by acts of kindness performed to
perfect or repair the world. The phrase has origins in classical rabbinic literature and
in Lurianic kabbalah, a major strand of Jewish mysticism originating with the work of
the 16th century kabbalist Isaac Luria.
Both ethical mitzvot (righteous deeds) as well as ritual mitzvot are important to the
process of tikkun olam. In contemporary phraseology, tikkun olam has come to
involve social action and social justice work – honoring humanity – that drop of divine
that is within in each and every one of us, no matter what race or religion.
As we begin this New Year of 5777, may we as individuals and as a congregational
community work together to effect Tikkun Olam for humanity and for this marvelous
world that our Creator has gifted us to inhabit!
