become happier and healthier, would you want to do it more?” It’s interesting how such a simple question changed the way millions of people now spend their time, energy and resources.

Back in 1969, gyms were in poor condition and exercise classes were sparsely attended. Someone taking a survey then might have asked people questions like: “Would you subject yourself to strenuous activity while one person is yelling and everyone else is sweating and panting? Would you interrupt your busy schedule to face traffic and other inconveniences, and then pay money to be subjected to this kind of treatment? Would you be foolish enough to invest in a ‘fitness center,’ as a business owner or a customer, when everyone knows it’s free to exercise at home or outdoors?”

Of course, most people would have answered “no” to these questions. But then Judi came along and asked a different question, and people began saying “yes.” Now there are over 58 million Americans who pay dues and fees to fitnesscenters, generating over $21.8 billion in revenue for thefitness industry in this past year alone. We could certainly call that a revolution, and it’s possible that something like this is about to happen again.

In recent months, Jewish professionals have been worrying about a recent Pew Study which indicates that AmericanJews, especially young people, are less engaged in Jewishinstitutions than ever before. I’m not worried because I can see that we’re in a situation almost identical to what we saw back in 1969. The problem is that we haven’t been asking the right question.

Jewish institutions, like our Temple, are under-utilized today for the same reasons that gyms and dance studios wereunder-utilized back in 1969. The Pew Study attempted to shed light on those reasons by asking questions like “do you practice religious rituals?” and “do you pay dues to be a member of a synagogue?” But the $100 million question is this: “If a combination of Jewish learning and spiritual practice could help you become happier and healthier, would you want to do it more?”

Many Jews have never seriously considered this question. Most young people, in particular, never learned from their parents or experienced first-hand the satisfaction that comes from Jewish learning or spiritual practice. Instead, when they come into a synagogue, as rare as that may be,

classes had a 90 percent dropout rate. Then it dawned on her that some of her students attended the class to lose weight, have fun and get in shape. As an experiment, she turned them away from the mirrors and became less critical of their movements. Her students enjoyed the classes and attendance soon doubled and then tripled, until her studio was packed.

Her husband, Jack, would sometimes drop by and see 8-10 women with scarves around their necks sitting on chairs knitting, reading and watching their daughters. “One day,” he recalled, “Judi turned and looked at the mothers and said she had to do something to get them up on their feet and experience the joy of movement.” She soon had the parentsmoving with a little music and some easy, up-tempochoreography.

A few years later when Judi and her husband moved toCalifornia, she started teaching classes for the Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department. Word spread and the program exploded with women from all over the area. To keep the number of participants to a manageable level, the department limited participation to individuals with a Carlsbadstreet address, but that didn’t stop some women. Theybegan signing up for P.O. boxes at the Carlsbad post office so they could attend her classes.

One day, a student suggested that she call her technique “Jazzercise” because it combined jazz dance and exercise. A couple of days later, Judi went to the copyright office and registered the name.

Today, “Jazzercise” is a household name. The organization now earns about $100 million each year and, in the past 20 years, has raised more than $25 million for charitable causes. Judi started a revolution and subsequently improved the lives of millions of people when she asked this question: “If acombination of jazz dance and exercise could help you Continued on page 22

Creation

Rabbi Mitchell ChefitzScholar-in-Residence

PRESIDENTIAL NEWLY INSPIRED

Joan L. SchaefferPresident

We complete the book of Genesis this month in our annual cycle of the readingof Torah and begin thenarrative of Moses in the book of Exodus.

Rashi begins his commentaryto Genesis by quoting Rabbi Isaac. “It was not necessary to begin the Torah except from

Exodus 12:2 – This month will be for you (the first month. Each of your years will begin with it).”

This commandment concerning the calendar is the first of the 613 commandments given to the children ofIsrael, and that’s what the Torah is all about, according to Rabbi Isaac – the commandments.

All of the book of Genesis and the first 11 chapters of Exodusare narrative. They lay the foundation for the commandmentsto follow.

What is the purpose of the commandments? Fulfillment of the commandments might be considered the ultimaterebellion against creation. It is the last in a long history ofrebellions, if we choose to read our creation stories that way.

The first rebellion came when Adam, the original earthling, complained to the Creator. “Everything has a mate, except for me. Take me back! I don’t want to be out here alone.” But, taking Adam back would have annulled the purpose of creation. There was work for this Adam to do. The Holy One put the earthling into a deep sleep and separated one side from the other – male and female. The male side the Holy One called by the original name, Adam. The female side was called Eve.

Adam and Eve might have been content to roam about the Garden of Delight, but they lamented their separation from the Creator. They tried to eat their way back, first by eatingthe fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. When their eyes were opened, they became aware of the Tree of Life. Lest they eat from the Tree of Life and become immortal, the Holy One exiled them from the garden and put a guard at the gate. Had they eaten, they would have nullified time. The process of creation would have collapsed.

The people of the generation of Noah discovered anotherprocess by which they might reunite with the Divine. Their sexual union with angels confused immanence and transcendence. Men began to increase their numbers

I am gradually becoming familiarwith our new prayer book and I have found it to be a tool tore-awaken my awareness. AlthoughI appreciate many of the readings in our “old” prayer book, they hadbecome rote and lost some of their impact. As I sit on the Bimah and

connect with the congregation, different readings capturemy attention and sometimes move me to new insights.Frankly, sometimes while I am sitting on the Bimah I look ahead and read some of the prayers on my own. One of the readings which resonated with me the first time I saw it and continues to resonate with me is found on page 55:

Disturb us, Adonai, ruffle us from our complacency:Make us dissatisfied. Dissatisfied with the peace ofignorance, the quietude which arises from a shunning of the horror, the defeat, the bitterness and the poverty, physical and spiritual, ofhumans.

It goes on…

Make us know that the border of the sanctuaryis not the border of livingand the walls of Your temples are not sheltersfrom the winds of truth, justice and reality.

…let not Your Shabbat be a day of torpor and slumber;Let it be a time to be stirred and spurred to action.

When I first read this, I WAS ruffled a bit. It challenges mynotion of Shabbat. Now I have to use it to be shaken? Disappointing at first, inspiring ultimately. My Shabbat nap has become shorter- I more readily face the confrontation ofliving my life actively seeking to make changes wherever I find myself.

I am excited to be on a new path yet again. There isrenewed purpose to my rest- both individually and as part of our social justice activities. I look forward, with delight, to the next chapter on this journey and thechallenges it may bring. As always, I am grateful for theTemple Israel community, which always supports me on my path towards growth and expansion.

NOTES FROM THE ECC

...........................................................................................................................................................................................

YOU ONLY GET ONE CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRSTIMPRESSION

In the book House Thinking, Winifred Gallagher takes the reader on a psychological tour of the American home. Room by room, she conveys the power of

Religious School News

place, examining spaces from looking right, to feeling right. Starting from the entry way, she provokes the reader to examine what that space conveys.

Using educational and design principles, we updated our Early Childhood Center entry way to convey ta message of “welcome.” We want our current and future families to feel that the space is as current and vibrant as our families are; a space that is well kept, updated, and is comfortably and respectfully shared by educators, parents, and children. A space that is playful and exciting, one that states: “We’ve been waiting for you.”

Using our existing resources, old chairs received a fresh coat of paint, dark walls now look bright and cheerful, warm lights balance thetypical office fixtures, and natural elements remind us of how beautiful our world is.

Unlike many schools with standard commercial looks, we learned from Loris Malaguzzi, founder of the Reggio Emilia schools, that “the environment should act as an aquarium which reflects the ideas, ethics, attitudes, and culture of the people who live in it.” Displaysdepicting stories of the experiences children encounter at the Joni and Stanley Tate Early Childhood Center will bring the walls to life soon. Although the space is not fully completed yet, here are some quotes our parents sent us:

Stefan writes: “Quickly wanted to reach out to let you know howexcited me and my wife are about the recent changes in the lobby and daycare in general. We hope that the fresh new bright colors are a sig-nal of the bright future ahead.”

Bill adds: “The reception area at the ECC is very warm and inviting.”

Maayan asserts: “How beautiful the front office looks. It is so much more inviting and up to date.”

Sarra shares: “The colors make the place alive, refreshed and bright. It looks beautiful.”

Lauri expresses: “I absolutely love the new entrance to the ECC. It is bright, cheerful and most of all, welcoming.”

We thank the many supporters who genuinely care and guide us with conviction in the important work we do, providing valuable constructivefeedback: From the families who trust us with their children, to Mr. Tate who is a passionate supporter of quality early childhoodeducation, and everyone in between: all are enthusiastically looking forward to seeing the ECC grow.

People talk about Jewish life: Jewish traditions, Jewish customs, etc. and we believe that children will learn all about Judaism in the coming years. But what do children understand at four or five years old about what makes someone a Jew? Our class has searched and discussed what it means to be a Jew. From their perspective, they expressed these meaningful points of view:

Harper: ”We do not need to look any way to be a Jew. You do not need to have a special skin color. You need to be kind and nice. Let the children play with you, ask their names and help them. I like Shabbat because I dunk the challah in the grape juice. I like Chanukah because you get presents and I like Yom Kippur but I forgot what it is about.”

Jared: “Being a Jew is helping others. Sharing is important. I like Chanukah, I like looking for the matzo that is hiding. I like the prayers, the challah and Sunday school.”

Abigail: “Being a Jew means to be kind, loyal and friendly. You can share. When somebody is crying you can also help them out. My big sister helps me a lot but my little sister does not. She is so cute you can never get mad at her. I like to be Jewish because on Chanukah we light the candles and also I like the crunchy matzo at Passover.”

Eitan: “My Abba speaks Hebrew. He says ‘Shalom’ and also speaks English. Jews live in different countries and different lands. They may speak different languages, what matters is to communicate and care about people. I like the Temple because I like the way that they sing about the Torah.”

Jordan: “I love my mommy. I take care of my brotherJonathan. Being Jewish is eating challah.”

Sora: “To be Jewish is to be respectful and kind to others. Always include everyone, no matter who it is even if they are not your friend. I like to be Jewish because I like to sing “Dovid Ysrael”, I love that one! My mom was born Jewish

If you know any families with children between the ages of 3 months to 4 years who are not yet in preschool, please ask them to come visit us. We’ll give them a warmwelcome! Our dedicated staff cares about children and families, and we are looking forward to seeing ourenrollment rise.

FIRST AND SECOND GRADE RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

What a busy year we are having. We gather at 9:15 a.m. for breakfast, Wheel of Mazel and Mystery Guest and then, as a group, go into our very own Tefilah (Prayer Service). This is followed by Hebrew and class learning consisting of Holidays, Prayers, Blessings, and concepts of God. We also have snack, usually related to our topic or a holiday, giving us the opportunity to practice the blessings appropriate to the foods we are eating. Our morning ends with Music taught by Ms. Jen, who is new to us this year.

We have been discussing Tzedakah from the point of view of community, class and individuals. Our class is very committedto our Bravery Heart project. Ethan Zindle’s mom, Megan, has been making and selling bracelets with the proceeds beingadded to our Tzedakah Project. These have been very popular. Our class Tzedakah project, a Snow Cone sale, will be held inconjunction with our Purim Carnival on March 16, 2014.

As part of our class discussions we have given the followingquestions much thought: What is your favorite prayer and why, what is your favorite holiday and why, and what do you like most about Religious School? Here are our student’s personal thoughts in their own words.

RABBI COLMAN A. ZWITMAN RELIGIOUS SCHOOL 2013-2014 TZEDAKAH PROJECT

BRAVERY HEARTSWhen a child begins their difficult journey with cancer or other life- challenging illnesses, they are given a necklace with their name on it. As they undergo difficult treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, they receive special plastic or wooden beads, called Bravery Beads, to add to their necklace to commemorate these milestones.

The collection of beads gives children and families hope as well as a tangible way to share their story. Over 10,000

children with cancer and other life challenging illnessesparticipate in the Bravery Beads Program each year.

Most Children’s Hospitals rely on the support of donors to provide the funds to acquire these beads. The Rabbi Colman A. Zwitman Religious School of Temple Israel has chosen this project for their 2013-2014 Tzedakah Project. It takes $50.00

to supply a child with beads for a year. Won’t you help us meet our goal of providing this wonderful visual of bravery to as many children as possible? You may contact Donna Seldes, Deborah Sherman or Phyllis Littman for additional information or to make a donation. Thank you

in advance for your support.

but my dad was not. He always says the prayers with us. So we celebrate Christmas and Halloween because we said we would. I like lighting the Shabbat candles with my mom; my dad and I say the prayers.”

Alan: “Being Jewish means to be kind and treat your friends nicely by not hitting them. I help my brother when he tells meto get something for him. I love my brother Richie becausesometimes we play video games together. My favorite part of coming to Sunday school is blowing the shofar.”

am involved with the theater program as I handle the TEK (lighting and sound) responsibilities for all the theaterproductions held at the school, the latest being the critically acclaimed Seussical the Musical show.

I also love to play sports. At Ransom I have played on thefootball team (offensive line), baseball team (pitcher anddesignated hitter) and most recently the golf team. Golf is my favorite sport. I love to practice and play, and I can see theimprovement in my game nearly every day. I live on KeyBiscayne and have access to one of the nicest golf courses in the country. I love playing with my dad and look forward to the day I can beat him, which I know will be very soon!

My other passions in life involve anything that is thrilling. I am an accomplished Snowboarder and spend as much time as I can with my grandparents at their house in Vail. I like biking, trail riding, motorcycling, wake boarding, kitesurfing, skateboarding, and rollercoasters just to name a few. The party theme for my Bar Mitzvah is car racing and I can’t wait to start the partycelebration which is being held at the K1 Speed race track.

Steven Becker is an avid sports fan and a terrific athlete. Heenjoys competition and is always trying to get everyone around him involved with the activity he is involved in. Steven is also a strong student. He has excelled in all of his academics and recently won an award for third best essay amongst Junior & Senior High school students throughout North Miami. In addition, Steven has earned Principals honor roll 5 out of 6 years while attending school.

Steven enjoys being around his family and loves to laugh. Heparticularly enjoys funny movies and quoting lines from these films. He is a great brother and wonderful son and we are proud of him and all he has achieved. We are excited for Steven and look forward to seeing him grow into a man.

Hi. My name is Nikolas Futernick, my friends call me Nik. I am 13 years old and getting prepared for my Bar Mitzvah, which is to be held here at Temple Israel on January 25th, 2014. I have 2 siblings, Zander and Elle, who were both Bnai Mitzvah here at Temple Israel.

I am in the 7th grade and attend Ransom Everglades middle school. At Ransom I

Sarah Glick is in 8th grade and attends a local charter school for the arts. She has performed for many years as a dancer through her school and dance studio. Sarah enjoys spending time with friends, reading, musicals, skiing, hiking, wake boarding and scuba diving. She is the granddaughter of Ellen Kempler and Kenneth Rosen, longtime members of Temple Israel, and the daughter of Mia and Bobby Glick.

KaddishMay God’s name be exalted and hallowed throughout the world that He created, as is God’s wish. May God’s sovereignty soon be accepted,

during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen.May God’s great name be praised throughout all time. Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, exalted and honored, extolled and

acclaimed may the Holy One be, praised beyond all song and psalm, beyond all tributes that mortals can utter. And let us say: Amen.Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life’s goodness for us and for all Israel. And let us say: Amen. May the One who brings peace to

they often look silly to themselves wearingyarmulkes and holding prayer books. “And why,” they ask, “are we doing this?”

If we are to learn anything from Judi SheppardMissett and the fitness revolution she inspired,we might try turning ourselves away from the mirrors and being less concerned withappearances long enough to discover that, inaddition to having a good time, we’re actuallyengaging in the paramount task of self-examination and self-improvement.

on the earth, and daughters were born to them. The sons of God (angels) saw that thedaughters of men were beautiful. So theymarried any of them they chose. (Genesis 6:1,2). Such unions were contrary to the purpose of creation. All but the family of Noah and theanimals on his lifeboat were wiped out in the flood.

Then came the generation of the Tower of Babel. There was only one language, a clear language, so each person understood not only the meaningbut the nuance of every word. Using this clarity, they began to build a tower to connect earth to heaven. An esoteric understanding is theyattempted to create a ladder of divine names. Either way, the process of creation would have come to an end. So, the Holy One confused their language and scattered them to the corners of the earth.

Generations passed until Abraham set up his tent and began to bring people, one by one, into the covenant between the Creator and creation. He completed the foundation upon which thecommandments might be given.

Should we, as individuals, as a people, as a world, fulfill the commandments, and, through that process refine our souls to such a degree that

JOSEPH’S TABLE Judith A. Frankel in memory of Maurice Frankel Dr. Ian Reiss in honor of Joseph’s Table

we walk with God – that is, we walk with the image of God, the Divine Name inscribed within us – then the purpose of creation will have been fulfilled. Creator and creation will have beenreunited.

This is the kavannah, the intent, with which we perform the ritual commandments, that we do them to unify the Yod-Hey and the Vov-Hey of the Divine Name – transcendence merging with immanence.

This is the purpose of living according to the ethicalcommandments, that we create heaven on earth.

So, fulfilling the commandments is a rebellion against the separation between ourselves and the Holy One. The greater one’s spiritual sensitivity, the more one chafes because of that separation. The result is refinement of one’s actions and one’s interactions.

Our tradition teaches this to be the ultimate purpose ofCreation, refinement of soul - a holy rebellion, if you like, to work ourselves back to Eden and the Tree of Life.
