one of which I recently circulated to members of ourcongregation. If you haven’t seen it yet and would like to measure your own spiritual health, contact our Templeoffice for a copy of (or link to) the questionnaire.

While it is the responsibility of most healthcare professionalsto focus on physical health, more attention is being given these days to the ‘interior dimensions’ of health; that is, emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being. Thisis bringing about widespread changes in the field ofhealthcare, but it could also have an important impact on synagogue life. Although we never thought about it in these terms, it has long been Judaism’s goal to bringmore attention to the interior dimensions of the humanexperience; that is, to our emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being.

Being scientifically-oriented, most Jews in this eradeveloped a misguided notion that Jewish spirituality is a recondite interest or hobby for the few who enjoy such things. But as the scientific community focuses moreattention on exploring the interior dimensions of ourexperience, we would do well to notice that this has

Rabbi M. Thomas Heyn

RABBI’S MESSAGEIs It Possible We Were Mistaken?

There were times when we could have said we just didn’t know any better; when cigarette ads claimed that doctors favored one brand over another; when we drove without seat belts; and when we enjoyed schmaltz and gribenes without knowing or caring about their effects on ourarteries.

These are only three examples of ideas and behaviors which we now know were not conducive to good health and safety. With a little reflection, we could probably come up with more examples. In most cases, however, there are only three reasons why such misguided thinking canpersist for long periods of time.

First, we might not have been presented with enoughevidence to convince us to think or behave differently. Secondly, if there was enough evidence, we might not have wanted to think or behave differently. And thirdly, admitting that we were mistaken is often considered a sign of weakness. For these reasons, attitudes and opinions are usually slow to change.

A growing body of evidence suggests that attitudes and opinions about health and healthcare are shifting in ways that will affect many institutions, including our own. There is an idea that was long disregarded in the scientificcommunity but is now under more careful investigation. It’s an idea that our rabbis spoke about in religious terms, while other Jewish thinkers -- such as Spinoza, Freud and Einstein -- spoke about it in non-religious terms. From a contemporary scientific perspective, the idea is this: the relationship between the ‘interior and exterior dimensions’ of the human experience are more complex and nuanced than we thought.

For the past few centuries, science concerned itself mainly with the ‘exterior dimensions’ of human experience; those dimensions we can measure, using any of our five senses– sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. In more recentyears, the social sciences have enabled us to learn andunderstand more about the ‘interior dimensions’ of the human experience, which include thoughts, feelings and other subjective phenomena.

Early in my career as a pastoral care professional, Ibecame interested in the work of researchers who were developing ways to measure the ‘spiritual health’ of their patients. A few questionnaires have since been devised,

which is correct? It’s up to you to choose.

So what other questions arise when we approach Chanukkah? (I am using this spelling from now on). Here is a list. You can choose your own answers.

1) Do you give one big gift or 8 small gifts, one each night? Our family has always debated this. As kids, I liked the one big gift. When I got older, I liked the small token of appreciation every night. What is your custom?

2) Apple Sauce or Sour Cream? What do you put on your latkes? Maybe you don’t put anything on them? Salt? Not sure. But people can always debate how to accessorize the best way to make latkes taste great. (I make a great latke by the way).

3) Do you put the candles in right to left or left to right? And when they are placed, how do you light them? Last candle first? First candle first? You can onlyimagine the variations on this one.

4) What about the Shamash? The candle that lights the others. Should it be higher than all the other can-dles or should it be at the same height? Should all the candles rise towards the culminating 8th candle?

5) And what about that electric menorah in thewindow. Should it be seen by you on the inside or by the people passing by on the outside?

So many questions and so little time. Chanukkah is a great holiday that should be shared by the entire family. Maybe make a new tradition this year. Maybe have everyone in your home design their own special Menorah to celebrate the holiday.

You can also join us on December 19th as we celebrate Chanukkah together at Temple Israel. Join us as we welcome our newest members and help us celebrate the 4th night together. Bring your own menorah and 5 candles to share the evening with us. Make your reservation in the office.

Hanukkah – A holiday of questions…

I always thought Chanukkah was a holiday of many questions. First of all, what is the “official spelling” of Chanukah. As you can now see, I have chosen 3 different versions already in this article. None are right and none are wrong. CH? H alone? Two “n’s”? It can go on and on. So

PRESIDENTIAL Perspective

Douglas M. JacobsPresident

I am still feeling the buzz of the holidays which passed back in October. I hope you are as well.

I was truly moved by the positive reception I received from everyoneand your generosity in supportingour High Holy Day appeal. I was a little concerned about coming

back as President for the 2nd time, but your “welcome back” to me was overwhelming. Thank you for making me feel great in coming back as your President.

So where do we go from here? We have a tremendous amount of programming coming up over the next few months. This Chai Lites is filled with event after event. We need you to come out and support our great activities and get involved. We always need more people to serve on committees, to roll up our sleeves and get involved. Let me know what you are interested in helping with. If there is a committee already in place, I will make sure you get on it. If there is not a committee, maybe you can be the new chair. We are only as strong as our members who get involved and help make Temple Israel the best Temple around.

At this time of year, I also want you to consider making a charitable contribution before the end of the year. Please consult your advisers but there may be good opportunities to make a year-end contribution that can benefit you for the future. If you need assistance, contact our Executive Director and we will help make all the arrangements.

On behalf of my entire family, I want to wish you and your extended families a happy and healthy New Year. May 2015 be a year of success and prosperity for you and your family!

Doctor of Musical Arts

I recently had the tremendousexperience and honor ofaccompanying Shabbat servicesat the Union for Reform Judaism National Biennial Convention in San Diego, California. There were 5,000 Reform Jews in attendance, packing the San Diego ConventionCenter, and services werebroadcast live on JLTV (Jewish Life TV), which also broadcast the 2013 Winter Jewish Music Concert last year.

What is Shabbat worship like at the URJ National Biennial? I have a great comparison: pretend it is Sunday morning, you are channel surfing on TV, you come across a huge Christian Crusade in a packed convention center, with great music on the stage, television cameras everywhere, dynamic service leaders, a 200 voiced choir, and a charismatic congregation fully engaged. Now in your mind make it Jewish, and that is what Shabbat worship is like at the URJ National Biennial.

The service leaders I played for are probably the two most significant Jewish clergy in the United States at this time: Rabbi-Cantor Angela Warnick Buchdahl, Senior Rabbidesignate of Central Synagogue in Manhattan, who currently serves the congregation as Senior Cantor, and Rabbi RickJacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism. Rabbi-Cantor Buchdahl is the first ever Asian to be ordained, and her newest appointment as Senior Rabbi designate ofCentral Synagogue in Manhattan has been publicized around the world.

The 2015 National Biennial Convention is taking place November 4-8 in Orlando, Florida, and I know many of us will take advantage of the close proximity and attend. It is a great way to meet 5,000 Reform Jews from across the country, and experience the newest and best offerings of the Union for Reform Judaism.

What started out veryunassumingly in 2009 as my Chai Anniversary Concert, has blossomed into one of thenation’s most highly regarded concerts of Jewish music. The Seventh Annual Winter Jewish Music Concert will take place on Saturday evening, January10, 2015 at 8pm, and willpresent a Bima full of singerswho are appearing on theconcert for the first time. It’s a bit risky for me to present 12 new singers, but I am confident of a fresh, exciting, beautifully sung,

and impressive evening of Jewish music from around the world. The roster is full of surprises, and include a JewishHaitian opera diva, an African American Yiddish singer, a conservative chazzan from Detroit, a guitar and violin duo from Boston, two Jewish choirs (one coming from Queens College in New York), and the world’s last great cantorial celebrity: Chazzan Alberto Mizrahi from Chicago.

General admission is $18, and this year we will offer, for the first time, a limited number of preferred seats priced at $100. Tickets are available at www.jewishconcert.org, or 1-800-838-3006.

RESURRECTIONBy Leo Tolstoy

The last of Tolstoy’s major novels, Resurrection tells the story of a nobleman’sattempt to redeem the suffering his youthful philandering inflicted on apeasant girl who ends up a prisoner in Siberia. At the same time, it is apanoramic description of social life in Russia at the end of the nineteenthcentury, reflecting its author’s outrage at the social injustices of the world in which he lived.

Temple IsraelRELIGIOUS SCHOOLPhilosophy“To live and teach the sanctity of Life”.....Elie Wiesel

This year’s class of 2nd/3rd Grade students is amazing: smart, enthusiastic, curious, collaborative, creative and challenging. Our morning begins in prayer integrated with music and Hebrew lessons. We have begun our Torah study with the Book of Genesis – a very good place to start! Of particular interest was our discussion of the 6th day of Creation when God made people. We gave our opinions of what it means to be created in God’s image: “To be like God, I should . . .”

Ariella Chacón-Bederson: To be like God, I should respect the world and Jews and plants.Kennedy Glinn: To be like God, I should do more mitzvahs.Julian Gorelick: To be like God, I should be kind, happy, and helping.Myles Heller: To be like God, I should plant a tree. Alexander Kolychkine: To be like God, I should be nice and help the poor get food. Zavian Schwartz: To be like God, I should be kind and helpful and also grateful. Ethan Zingle: To be like God, I should help the Jewish people. Jessica Engel: To be like God, I should be more helpful, kind and celebrate the Jewish holidays.Jamie Engel: To be like God, I should be loving, respectful and give to charity.

In line with our thinking is this year’s school-wide tzedakah project: Yad Eliezer. It is a project which reaches out to those citizens of Israel who would otherwise go hungry. Monthly food boxes and special holiday meals are providedto families and hot meals are delivered to the sick and to the elderly. We had some ideas of our own about different things we might do to help those in need:

Fix up old clothes and send them - or sell them and donate the money.Donate toys to charity.Plant seeds to grow food.

Help build a house and a shed with a generator – give building supplies.

Donate money we have saved and buy food to give to the needy.

Grow trees that produce food.

It feels good to do good things for other people. We are learning that the greatest gift of tzedakah is to help others, less fortunate, better their lives. It is going to be a great year!

SISTERHOOD CORNER

always been Judaism’s primary focus. It’s like being a heart-healthy doctor back in the days when other doctors were smoking, and eating schmaltz. Finally, people are becoming more open to what we’ve been teaching and practicing all along.

On Sunday, December 5th, renowned author andjournalist, Jay Michaelson, will lead us into a deeperdiscussion on the interior dimensions of the humanexperience from a Jewish perspective. Our rabbis and mystics had many insights that are now more relevant than in previous decades. We’ll examine these insights in relation to the emerging field of ‘spiritual health’ to gain a better understanding of what it is, how to measure it, and how we can improve it using the means we have at our disposal.

As more and more people bring their focus to the interior dimensions of the human experience, we Jews might try focusing our own attention there a bit more. In doing so, we may discover that Judaism has some valuable ideas and techniques to offer in this domain. If we had failedto notice them before, we were certainly mistaken.Fortunately, it’s not too late to notice them now.

KaddishMay God’s name be exalted and hallowed throughout the world that He created, as is God’s wish.

May God’s sovereignty soon be accepted, during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen.May God’s great name be praised throughout all time. Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, exalted and honored, extolled and acclaimed may the Holy One be, praised beyond all song and psalm, beyond all tributes that mortals can utter.

And let us say: Amen.Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life’s goodness for us and for all Israel. And let us say: Amen.

May the One who brings peace to His universe bring peace to us and to all Israel. And let us say: Amen.Zichrona L’vracha, May their memory be for a blessing.
