Rabbi M. Thomas Heyn

RABBI’S MESSAGEThe Message of Sukkot

I love Sukkot, which falls this year during the first week inOctober. I enjoy decorating and spending time in ourcongregation’s sukkah, and shaking the lulav is a pleasant ritual. But it’s the spirit of the festival I love most because, aside from being a season for rejoicing, it draws our attention to the transient nature of all things.

My appreciation for this odd combination of themes shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows that I spent a few years workingas a hospice chaplain. Far from being depressing, it was a job that allowed me to interact with people who understood how precious life is when you learn how suddenly it can end. And anyone who’s heard of my affinity for Buddhism might also know that one of its fundamental teachings is the notion of impermanence. There’s a wonderful story, which mightillustrate why I find this idea to be so compelling.

One day King Solomon decided to test his most trustedminister, Benaiah. He said to him, “Benaiah, there is a certain ring that I want you to bring to me. I wish to wear it for Sukkot which gives you six months to find it.”

“If it exists anywhere on earth, your majesty,” replied Benaiah, “I will find it and bring it to you. But what makes the ring so special?”

“It has magic powers,” answered the king. “If a happy man looks at it, he becomes sad, and if a sad man looks at it, he becomes happy.” Solomon knew that no such ring existed in the world but he wished to humble his minister, who hadbecome a little too proud of his position in the royal court.

Spring passed and then summer. Benaiah searched far and wide but had no idea where he could find the ring. On the night before Sukkot, he decided to take a walk in one of the poorest quarters of Jerusalem. He passed by a merchant who had begun to set out his wares on a shabby carpet. “Have you by any chance heard of a magic ring that makes the happy wearer forget his joy and the broken-hearted wearer forget his sorrows?” asked Benaiah.

He watched the old man take a plain gold ring from his carpet and engrave something on it. When Benaiah read the words on the ring, his face broke out in a wide smile. That night the entire city welcomed in the holiday of Sukkot with greatfestivity, King Solomon asked, “Well, my friend, have you found what I sent you after?”

All the ministers laughed and Solomon himself smiled. Toeveryone’s surprise, Benaiah held up a small gold ring and

declared, “Here it is, your majesty!”

As soon as Solomon read the inscription, he looked up at his throne room and down at his jeweled hands and fine clothes and his smile faded. He called for one of his guards to bring an old beggar who had just walked past the palace gate to the throne room. When the poor man walked into the palace, Solomon handed him the ring. The man’s tired, worn out face broke into a smile when he read the words on the ring. The king gave him a bag of gold and sent him on his way. Solomon gave one of his jeweled rings to Benaiah and slipped the small gold band on his own finger. The words inscribed on the ring, the words that could make a rich man frown and a poor man smile were: “Gam zeh ya’avor – This too shall pass.” From that time on, Solomon always kept the ring on his finger and those words in his heart.

Sukkot reminds us that, as human beings and as Jews, our place in the world is precarious. It doesn’t make me depressed but fills me with hope, for when we understand the nature of impermanence, we become better suited to face the challenges we encounter in our daily lives. We learn to compromise with one another, to be less annoyed by small inconveniences, and to appreciate the present moment and all we possess - including life itself - as a gift.

This season of our rejoicing - z’man simchateinu - reminds us that joy and impermanence are inextricably linked. Now is the time to appreciate what we have, to love one another, and to celebrate this glorious moment in time because “gam zeh ya’avor.”

SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCEA “Torah TED Talk” – What You Need to Know about Torah

Rabbi Mitchell ChefitzScholar-in-Residence

PRESIDENTIAL Perspective

Joan L. SchaefferPresident

Continued on page 21

Each of the next few months I hope to give a “Torah TED Talk” on a Sunday morning, an 18 minute talk (with an additional hour for Q&A). Each talk, in classic “TED” fashion, is designed to change your life through illumination. (Google “TED Talk” if you don’t know what a TED Talk is.)

You might think a talk about Torah itself would be more for information than illumination. And, you might think, for a progressive Jew, a Torah-talk would be more academic than life-changing. But, life-changing it is. Developments in Torah touch us all.

Consider this: Torah is more than a holy artifact. Torah beginswith that scroll we hide away in the aron kodesh – the holy closet. We bring her out to celebrate special occasions: Shabbat, festivals, the High Holydays. Since these are the only days most progressive Jews attend religious service, we might be deluded into thinking that scroll is the beginning and end of Torah. Note well: it is only the beginning. Torah is an ongoing process.

The Torah scroll had its origins about 3,000 years ago. For a thousand years, it was the operating system of the Jewish people. Temple service, sacrificial offerings, the priesthood – all of this began to decay toward the end of those thousand years. The synagogue, the prayer service, and the rabbinatebegan to emerge. The written Torah was no longer theoperating system. Rather, the Torah developed through oral arguments. The Talmud, the written compendium of those oral arguments, became the operating system.

The way we marry (and divorce), the way we bury our dead (and mourn), even the way we argue...all of this emanates from the Talmud, the rabbinic Torah. The way we pray, the way we celebrate Shabbat, festivals, Holydays... all form the Talmud. Blessings over bread and wine...the Talmud. Virtually everything we do Jewish, even as progressive Jews: Talmud.

With the rabbinic Torah we had the evolution of Jewish law – the Halachah. We might think progressive Jews don’t follow the Halachah. After all, most of us don’t keep kosher. Most of us don’t observe a “traditional” Shabbat. But, Halachah is a broad highway. There are different lanes of observance, some strict, some lenient. But even progressive Jews who aren’t on the highway at all are still using off road vehicles. We may not be observant, but we know what we’re notobserving!

A new year at Temple IsraelOne of the things that has resonated with me since the beginning of my now 14 year membership in Temple Israel is our wide array of people and their corresponding variety of

traditions. We have just about every flavor of Jew in our midst and we learn so much from one another. Our ritual practices are steeped with tradition and that tradition has created our own unique and ever-evolving flavor.

We have accomplished a great deal in the past few months. We have reinvigorated our Early Childhood Center including theenhanced participation of family members on an on-goingbasis. We have resumed a new and creative approach to our Religious School. We have beautified our Campus and we will continue to do so. We have an energetic new rabbiwho already has begun programs to support our activeengagement in Jewish life and learning. Embarking on these programs and courses of study entice both our current and future members.

Increasingly we are in the midst of a renaissance in thelocal community surrounding our historic congregation. This, without a doubt is a great opportunity as well as awelcome challenge. As we have created a community within our Synagogue, and historically have expanded our religious practice of our deeds of loving kindness throughout the community, we are capable of rising to these new challenges to grow, to sustain our faith and to impact our community because we really do have the base to do it. Temple Israel is the place where all Jews may feel at home and where we can support one another in achieving great things for ourselves and for the community around us.

Many congregants have long traditions at Temple Israel. I am not one of them. My history is not short, but not long. Like many others, I came to know Temple Israel through myparticipation in the community at large. Often thatparticipation brought me to this campus for meetings and seminars where change agents made things happen. That’s the history of Temple Israel and I find a very strong attraction to that energy.

As a synagogue which reaches out to others, we know how to unite and to make our community flourish as we continue our imprint on the transformation of the greater Miami community. To me this goes hand in hand. In my experience we have always been that way and I am certain that thatenergy is alive and well on this campus. I know we will support

“…And a Flintstone glass of oil…”

It was 1965 and Grandma Frieda ( who I imagined to be the best cook and baker in the world) wasstaying with us in our 3 bedroomapartment in Riverdale, N.Y. Though just a child, as she prepared to

bake her much sought after honey cake, I begged her to share her recipe for this rare and delicious treat. Although I didn’t mean to, it seems that I put quite a challenge before her, as she like most women of her time, had never actuallymeasured the ingredients. But staring down at me with her soulful light blue eyes, she forced a smile and noddedreluctantly in agreement.

I watched her closely, trying to memorize everything that she did as if she was a famous world class baker. But as the expression goes, “…the wanting is better than the having…” And as is the way with most children, once I had the prized information, I lost interest and put the card in a safe place. I did not look at it again for many years.

Seven years later as Rosh Hashanah was approaching I thought that my dad would appreciate once again tasting his mother’s treasured delicacy- so I dug out the recipe. I was looking forward to going grocery shopping to purchase what was needed to surprise him, but before doing so, I looked over the ingredients to familiarize myself with the recipe once again. I quickly became perplexed when I saw that in my own handwriting that the recipe called for “a Flintstone glass of oil.” I was clearly stumped, but had to laugh out loud (lol.) “A Flintstone glass of oil?” I thought. “What is a Flintstone glass of oil?” Then I thought for a moment and remembered that my mother used to buy grape jam and jelly, which came in glass containers that when emptied could be used for drinking glasses. Depicted on the glasses were cartoon characters…and yes, I then remembered having a favorite Pebbles glass for my juice in the morning. So off I went to see just how many ounces is a Flintstone glass?

From what then became the family tradition of my annual baking my grandmother’s delicious cake, there was a spin-off of yet another family tradition…the annual sending of this massive cake to my brother-in-law, Joel Greenberg.

In 1982 as Rosh Hashanah was approaching, he and mysister Carol had moved to Durham, N.C. The way I remember

A MUSICAL INTERLUDE

Alan MasonDirector of Music and

Doctor of Musical Arts

Would YouLike to Sing?

We are starting something fun and new at Temple Israel on Thursday afternoon, October 11 at 5:30: The Temple Israel Singers, our first temple choir. Don’t be scared of the word choir. It’s just a group of people who like to sing, and would enjoy the challenge and joy of singing in a group. Singing is a wonderful release and opportunity to express your thoughts and feelings through music.

All are welcome to join the Temple Israel Singers, no matter what your level of musical skill is. You will be provided with a binder, sheet music for those who read (or would like to begin learning how), and lyric sheets for those who prefer to see just the words. We will rehearse for an hour on Thursdays at 5:30, probably in the Gumenick Chapel, and if a few nice Shabbat songs are learned quickly enough, we will sing on the Bima during services over Thanksgiving weekend.

Here’s where your creative help is needed: please suggest some possible names for the choir. Perhaps a Hebrew phrase, or a liturgical phrase, or a lovely English name.

Looking forward to seeing you at our first rehearsal on Thursday afternoon, October 11 at 5:30. Please let thetemple office know you are coming so we will know how many binders to prepare.

The first rule of singing in any choir: bring a sharpened pencil!

GREAT BOOKS CLUBInvites You and Your Friends to DiscussTHE POWERS THAT BE

By David HalberstamThursday, October 25, 2012

12:00 PMIn this book David Halberstam chronicles the stunning rise in power and influence of America’s communication empires. Taking us behind the scenes of the beginnings of the press and television networks, our eyes are opened to their continued impact on our lives and our government. In great and fascinating detail, the author describes how CBS, The Washington Post, Time, Inc. and The Los Angeles Times (and the people who controlled these media) have affected and shaped our society. In this political season, The Powers That Be could not be a more timely read.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS

Sandler recorded: “(is) Eight crazy nights.” Still, the Festivalof the Booths, HaHag (THE Festival), Zman Simchateinu (Time of our Rejoicing), dusty, buggy, cold in the north and warm in the south Sukkot you have got my sweet and sour heart. We exercise design skill and muscle and we build. We deal with fragility especially in hurricane prone South Florida. We make a ritual circle and embrace creation that, because we don’t do it often, always feels a bit strange until the sweet odor of etrog (citron) serves you back your own memories and that of every generation of Jew that has done the same. What Ireally love about Sukkot is that it stands for both creation and harvest. Two key elements of life. What I really really love about Sukkot is that it is one of the three Torah festivals that every year has a good chance of reaching us. The popularityand inertia of Passover (should) sell itself out of slavery everyyear while poor Shavuot, only the moment we receivedTorah, is cast into summer stock with nothing to build, no family flocking and if you are lactose intolerant... So ourchildren make decorations and they help build and they “camp out” and they shake, shake, shake the lulav and they learn special blessings pruned by tradition especially for their crisp ears. And then they hold the etrog, each year smaller in their growing hand. And with it, they are holding fragility, complexity... and Torah.

Thought the beginning of Religious School kept us busy? We are looking forward to our second Family Program on 7 Oct. Bicycles, Razors, training wheels and all manners of scooter are encouraged for our ‘cycle’ concept that will culminate with our Simchat Torah/Joy of Torah Celebration. Students will also meet spiritual guests (ushpizin) from modernity and embrace the enormous contributions of Jews to Western civiliation. Note: Our effective “after hour” Hebrew session does not meet on Family Program days! Geared for youth in grades 3-7, out “mid week Hebrew on Sundays” program has handily solved all of the mid-week scheduling conflicts busy families have and allowed us to continue a meaningfulHebrew prayer program. Sunday, 28 Oct.-- “HebrewMarathon Day” is a special day where we will study ourAlephBet and heritage language in a variety of ways for the entire session. Want to jump start your skills? All arewelcomed!

KaddishMay God’s name be exalted and hallowed throughout the world that He created, as is God’s wish. May God’s

sovereignty soon be accepted, during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen.May God’s great name be praised throughout all time. Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, exalted and honored, extolled and acclaimed may the Holy One be, praised beyond all song and psalm,

beyond all tributes that mortals can utter. And let us say: Amen.Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life’s goodness for us and for all Israel. And let us say: Amen.

May the One who brings peace to His universe bring peace to us and to all Israel. And let us say: Amen.Zichrona L’vracha, May their memory be for a blessing.

........................................................................................

In our generations the operating system of rabbinic Judaism is beginning to decay. Now Rabbi Google is the first authority consulted when it comes to matters of Jewish tradition. On the world-wide web Torah tradition is evolving rapidly.

This will have a substantial impact on all of us, whether we are actively involved in the transition or not. “The Torah Ted talk” on Sunday, Oct. 14, will make this clear – in only 18minutes! I look forward to your questions, and your answers as well.

each other in a great personal and collective adventure. I welcome you all to make your own imprint on this place as we merge the spiritual practice of Judaism with the wonderful realities of our great city.

I wish you a warm and wonderful New Year.

L’Shana Tovah

the story is that, Joel said, “It just isn’t the holidays without Marla’s honey-cake!” I was so touched and thought that this was such an easy fix, so every year since then, including Rosh Hashanah this year, if we are not together on the holidays, I bake and overnight a honey cake to them, and now also to their two children in Boston. Of course prices have changed and there were times, due to gas surcharges that I paid as much as $100.00 to ship it…but for me the rewards of not breaking with tradition, has great value.

We have had a longstanding tradition at Temple Israel ofbeing known in the community as a progressive and inclusive Reform congregation on the cutting edge of philosophies, which are often ahead of their time, and are not necessarilypopular or easy. But despite this, Temple Israel enters into its 91st year, by holding tight to its unique beliefs. Whileembracing the old, we are on the precipice of creating a new paradigm and tradition under the spiritual leadership ofRabbi Tom Heyn in partnership with Rabbi Mitchell Chefitz. And coupled with our devoted leadership, members and staff who realize that our tradition, our ritual, is precious we will continue to embrace our brand of Judaism with all of our hearts and souls.

“The human soul can always use a new tradition. Sometimes we require them.” Pat Conroy
