RABBI’S MESSAGE
April showers
bring May flow-
ers. Well that’s at
least how the say-
ing goes.
Here at Agudas,
May also brings
more activities and an even-more
bustling synagogue. Throughout
this newsletter you will see all the
wonderful events and activities in
which you can engage. I do hope
you take advantage of them. Maybe
even the ones which don’t initially
strike your fancy, but you will give
it a chance anyway because you
never know what you might experi-
ence or to whom you might con-
nect. We all know that change is
hard and yet it can also be incredi-
bly rewarding.
In that vein, I wanted to let you
know of some changes that you will
see in two parts of our building.
The first is in the board room. We
will be receiving and using an inter-
active whiteboard. Imagine a com-
puter built into a white board, with
all the functionality of both. So we
will be able to watch videos, have
fewer handouts, listen to music,
have prezi presentations, and draw
(though, sorry to say, my artistic
skills will remain the same).
One value in Judaism is taking
care of our environment, and Jewish
concept of bal tashchit, "do not de-

stroy," forbids needless destruction. Going electronic,
like we have with our newsletter and our membership
directory, allows us to be more mindful of our impact
on our natural resources.
Another value stems from the Mishnah in Pirkei Avot
4:1, which says “who is wise? One who learns from
everyone”. Having an electronic resource in our board
room allows for more teachers too. With the internet at
our fingertips, the resources are endless.
Another value is adaptation. While there is no quote
from Pirkei Avot, rest assured that Jews know how to
adapt. We have had to adapt since our inception as a
people. From Abraham to Moses, from David to Baby-
lonia, from sacrificial religion to rabbinic, from isolated
to included, we Jews have learned to adapt. And so
now, as we are well into the 21st century and technology
is not going away, we are adapting.
One final point here too, we will also be installing a
new traditional white board for those who are not yet
ready to go all in. Change is hard, but it doesn’t have to
be painful.
The second technological change you will see in our
building is in our sanctuary. We will be installing pro-
jectors and screens so we may participate in visual te-
filah. Here too, we know that change can be challeng-
ing, and we will take it slow. Once everything is in
place, we will have a demonstrative service so that we
will all feel comfortable with the change. We will not
use it every week at first as we all get accustomed to
this newness.
Here too, why?
Have you ever wondered what page we are on? If it is
on the screen, you don’t need to wonder. Have you ever
wanted to look around and connect with our community
while praying rather than looking at your siddur? With
this, you can. Have you ever wanted to read, not just
listen, to new prayers? With this, you can. Are your
hands hurting and you’d rather not hold a book, but you
still want to follow along? With this, you can.
Do images speak more to you than words? We will pre-
sent to you not just the words, but pictures and scenes and
images which capture the essence of our prayers.
With this visual tefilah we can join together even more
during our services as a community. We are able to build
deeper relationships with one another with this addition.
And that ultimately is our goal.
If you want to know more, my door is open.
I hope you are excited about these additions and growths
in our synagogue as I and our leadership are. Blessings for
a healthy and happy month,
Warmly, Rabbi Rachael Jackson
The Jewish calendar is remarkable in that for
thousands of years, each year, we observe the same
holidays and rituals over and over. We now look
ahead at the month of May which is marked by the
festival of Shavuot. As I have written before, Sha-
vuot is the Hebrew word for “weeks” and refers to
the Jewish festival marking the giving of the Torah
at Mount Sinai, which occurs seven weeks after
Passover. Shavuot, like many other Jewish holi-
days, began as an ancient agricultural festival that
marked the end of the spring barley harvest and the
beginning of the summer wheat harvest. In ancient
times, Shavuot was a pilgrimage festival during
which Israelites brought crop offerings to the Tem-
ple in Jerusalem. Today, it is a celebration of Torah,
education, and actively choosing to participate in
Jewish life (reform judaism.org). There are many
traditions associated with Shavuot and many les-
sons to be learned. One of my favorite traditions is
the reading of the Book of Ruth. The ancient rabbis
said that the Book of Ruth was written to teach us a
lesson in gemilut chasadim, acts of loving-kindness.
(see Ruth Rabbah 2:15).
Here at Agudas Israel we often see acts of loving
kindness. However, this month, we will, with bitter-
sweet tears of joy, celebrate our own Sherry Harris.
Sherry is leaving us to be closer to her family in
Minnesota. As she leaves, we are infused with the
memories of all that she has given us; her love and
friendship, gifts of service, and unwavering support
for all things Agudas Israel. I know many of you
have memories that make you smile when you think
of your encounters with Sherry. Be sure to share
those memories with Sherry and with us. Join us on
this special evening as we honor Sherry who has
honored us with her gifts. May her generous and
loving deeds serve as an inspiration and lesson for
each of us.
Feeling grateful,
Dr. Linda Perkel, President

Meet Abbie and
Andy Volin
Andy originally
hails from Colum-
bia, South Carolina,
and Abbie was born
just outside of Chi-
cago. Abbie lived
in Hendersonville
for more than 30 years prior to moving with Andy,
and his cat “Shmata”, to Landrum, South Caro-
lina.
They love taking care of their 100 year old home
and also have two booths in the area which are
stocked with vintage goods . Their home and
booths keep them busy going to estate sales and
auctions in their “spare” time. Abbie is also a
jewelry artist and incorporates vintage items in her
work. She repurposes and repairs the unique
pieces that she finds. Andy has a great career
working for Lowe’s for the last thirty years. Also
known as Grammy and
Pops, they have 5 wonderful
children and 3 perfect grand-
children between them!
Be sure to introduce your-
self the next time you see them here at the syna-
gogue or in town. Submitted by: Barbara Gittleman
Your submissions for Chai-Lites MUST be sent directly to Marilyn Rosen. This is the only way to ensure that they will be published.
Deli Night for the congregation, and any outside
guests who wish to participate are welcome.
Brotherhood has also committed to lead 2 Shabbat
Services during the upcoming fiscal year. Dates to
be coordinated with Rabbi Jackson.
Tours are being planned to the BMW plant and to
the Equestrian Center
Brotherhood is actively reviewing the paver
fundraising program which will be implemented
once we obtain pricing for the engraved bricks and
pavers.
Announcements regarding planned Brotherhood
events will be featured in the upcoming Chai Lites
and the weekly Agudas Israel Newsletters as well
as email reminders.
Special thanks to everyone who helped set up the
social hall for the Passover Seder.
Shalom

In compliance with Henderson County Fire Safety Regulations, all fire exit doors, used for exiting and entering our building, must be kept clear of all obstructions, including but not limited to unattended motor vehicles which will cause delay in access for fire-rescue and police. In addition, it will hinder people inside our building in attempting to evacuate in case of emergency: There are five (5) fire exit doors; the main entrance doors under the covered driveway, two west far side doors which lead out into the parking lot area; the fourth is located to the rear of the library which is also used as an evacuation point and for the pick-up and /or delivery of items. The fifth door is also used as an evacuation point, for delivery and pickups, and not to be used to leave standing unattended vehicles parked. In addi-tion, I ask everyone to make sure when they utilize our parking spaces that they lock their vehicles and make sure that valuables are either removed or locked away. In case the building has to be evacuated, the two double doors in the Social Hall, and the northeast door located in the Sanctuary, are to be used by the occupants inside the building that leads to the "Founders Garden". which is the designated gathering point for safety. Thank you, Al Rosen,VP Building & Grounds
