Indeed Subbiah Bagavathar and Ramudu Iyer became a the-ater box-office draw! The famed Tamil writer, journalist, arts critic, and literary giant, ‘Kalki’ (Ra. Krishnamurthy) wrote about suchboisterous bouts in his interesting and humor-drenched dramareviews in the popular weekly ‘Ananda Vikatan’.

(Until 1940-1941, Kalki was the Associate Editor of the S. S.Vasan-owned weekly and wrote many features including hismuch-awaited fiction under several pen names. His music re-views, including those of gramophone records, dramas and films, appeared under the pseudonym, ‘Karnaatakam’. Such reviewswere read with much interest by thousands of readers. Later acollection of them appeared in book form and proved a good seller.Such collections in Tamil were rare in those days.)

An important film of 1933 was ‘Nandanar’ produced by thelegendary film company of yester-decades, New Theaters ofCalcutta. One of the most famous names in the history of IndianCinema, it produced many hits and classics in Bengali and Hindi. The company also produced a few films in Tamil during the 1930’slike ‘Nalla Thangaal’,(1935), ‘Kovalan’(1934), ‘Devadas’(1937),‘Poorna Chandra’(1935), ‘Bhaktha Prahalada’(1933) ‘ Raja Bhoja’(1935), and ‘Nandanar’ (1933).

The folk myth tale of the low-born farmhand Nandan and hisunfathomable devotion and ‘bhakthi’ for Lord Nataraja has beena familiar tale among Tamilians. It was written as a musical titled,‘Nandan Charitram’ by Gopalakrishna Bharathi, ‘circa’ late 18thcentury. Bharathi’s work was a great success and proved im-mensely popular in the form of ‘Harikatha Kalashepam’. Later itwas made as a hit play and as a silent film in 1923 and 1930. Whencinema began to talk and sing Tamil in 1931, the folk myth tale wasmade thrice in 1933, 1935 and 1942.

The 1935 version made history with the famed stage and screenstar, musician, and cult figure K. B. Sundarambal playing the malerole of Nandan. The 1942 version was produced by the Indianmovie mogul, S. S. Vasan for his Gemini Studios and the well knownClassical Carnatic musician, champion of the Thamizh Isai Move-ment, and sometime movie star, M. M. Dhandapani Desikarplayed Nandan. The Gemini version was the most successfulversion of them all.

Another forgotten pioneer filmmaker, P. V. Rao, directed theNew Theaters version. The title role of the ‘untouchable’ (Ma-hatma Gandhi called them ‘Harijans’, now known as ‘Dalits’) andlowborn ‘Shiva Bhaktha’ was enacted by S. V. SubbaiahBhagavathar.

When cinema began to talk Tamil, film producers made a beelineto theater and the Carnatic music world, and engaged artistes whocould sing well and were reasonably handsome. As a top stage starknown for his musical knowledge, singing and acting skills, SubbaiahBhagavathar was an automatic choice. Thus P. V. Rao and NewTheaters cast him as Nandan.

Besides his fame and name as stage star, he was also popularfor his best selling gramophone records, known to the commonman and woman as ‘plates’. The most popular of them all was ‘Jaya Jaya Gokula Bala,’ Indeed, to this day, this song is associatedwith his name like a signature tune!

Subbaiah Bhagavathar recorded many songs - around forty -and some of his noted discs then known as ‘plates’ were KaayathaKaanagathey, Entha Maanida Vedar, Nalvaakku Nee, SuraliMahimai, Saanthamuleka (two parts), Dharaniyil Anbu,Poongavana Kuyiley, Vaazhaiyadi Vaazhai, Nee Mathi Sallaga,Kaathalin Bhagyia, Karpil Sirandha, Chidambaram Pogaamal(from ‘Nandanar’), Annamey, Maadhavar Kulam, Appaney NeeyeyGathi, Sringara Lahari, Sri Raghukula, Dinamani Vamsa, Sarasaand Rani Kalyani.

Subbaiah Bhagavathar had been born into an orthodox Brah-min family and, even as a lad, he was drawn to music and drama. When his family vehemently objected to his interest in such ‘riffraff’ arts’ he left home one night and joined a ‘Boys’ Company’ asactor.

The Madras High Court di-rected the Chennai Corpora-tion Commissioner and theexecutive engineer concernedon Aug. 2 to file affidavits stat-ing as to why, despite severalrepresentations by SpringfieldMatriculation and Higher Sec-ondary School 50th Street,Sector 9, K. K. Nagar) they hadnot stopped the constructionof a temple with its wall block-ing a gate of the institution.

Passing interim orders on theschool’s petition, the FirstBench of Chief Justice M. Y.Eqbal and Justice T. S.Sivagnanam directed the K. K.Nagar Police Inspector to file aseparate affidavit as to why hehad not taken any action toprevent the closing of the schoolgate and raising a temple therewhen there was a specific di-rection by the Supreme Courtthat no temple or any religious

Court directive on temple ‘blocking’ school gate

structure should be con-structed on the road.

In its petition, the school al-leged that a few residents of49th and 50th Streets haderected a small temple in themiddle of the street in front ofthe school’s western gate. Theschool had sent representa-tions and reminders to the au-thorities for removing the con-struction.

The Bench posted the casefor further hearing on Aug. 6.In the meantime, the policeshould post sufficient numberof personnel to prevent anyfurther mischief that may becommitted, the court said.

(A Mambalam Times re-porter who visited the spotfound that those who had builtthe temple had constructed awall along the compound wallof the school behind which thegate has been installed. Seepictures top and middle.

(Enquiries reveal that instal-lation of the gate began twomonths ago and the compoundwall was to have been demol-ished after work was com-pleted and gate could be used.Meanwhile, a wall was builtalong the compound wall of theschool and the temple was con-structed.

(Similarly, another gate hasbeen installed behind the com-pound wall of the school on 50th

Street but the compound wallis yet to be demolished for ac-cess to the gate. Here also atemple has been constructedas seen in picture at bottom).

The Delhi layabouts, who have nothing elseto do but want to pose to the world that, but forthem, Indian democracy would have becomethe twin brother of Idi Aminism, are, for thenonce, afflicted with adenoids caused by non-stop garrulity a la the next Presidential tenantof the

screens as the pawns, to use friend WorldChampion V.Anand’s gold-mine expression, none of whom deserves the crown. The only onewho deserves it is a guy called M. A. Sadanand, and the beggers who have been burning fuelchasing the reluctant candidates have forgottenthe only address or telephone number of theBest of the Lot who would give a glimpse of thepromised land to the billion plus of this beautifulland, which would replicate the glorious days ofKing Mahabali who ruled what was then calledKerala. This guy M. Bali, later cheated by thecrooks and banished to solitary confinement bythe political grabbers, is released only on OnamDay to visit his home State. He never fails to callme on his Nokia to bewail all that he sees on hisTV in Hades. We had been in touch but I havelost his cell phone number as otherwise I couldhave rung up the guy to find out the heavenlydispensation regarding the proposed tenant ofRaisina Hill.

Kalam had an innings there and he shouldnow go about clearing up the cobwebs inpeople’s minds about the imagined dangers ofKoodankulam and try to build more of suchpower plants. Raisina Hill is for fat people whowant to draw a fat salary and, like PrathbhaPatil, to see the world. Never in the history ofthis beautiful nation of ‘Sathyameva Jayathe’has a single person saved 30 condemned killersfrom the gallows. Her hands are not bloodied sofar and, before she quits in July, I hope she letsall the others in the death rows live. Whateverher advisers recommend, her right isconstitutionally untrammeled and beyondjudicial review.

Whoever comes in her place, I hope, will bean abolitionist. If there is no such strong-willedand humane chap to sit in Raisina Hill, seek nofurther, because I, who was a GovernmentPleader of the Madras High Court and whoabhors the death sentence as an insult tohumanity and all that is beautiful in this world, hereby nominate myself for the job.

Electricity consumers will be infor another shock after the increasein tariff some months ago, if theproposal for a hike in existing feesfor new service connections andintroduction of levies for a dozenservices including replacement ofdamaged/burnt meters, all clubbedunder miscellaneous charges, wereto be approved.

The proposal, mooted by theTamil Nadu Generation and Dis-tribution Corporation(TANGEDCO), envisages themanifold increase in the existingfees on different counts.

The Corporation’s petition (M.PNo. 16 of 2012) is available on thewebsite of the Tamil Nadu Elec-tricity Regulatory Commission(TNERC) (www.tnerc.gov.in).The miscellaneous charges are lev-ied under two dozen heads.

For example, in the case of newservice connections, the proposedconnection charges for domesticconsumers having three phase sup-ply with connected load up to 18.6kilo watt (KW), are Rs. 1,600. Ifthe connected load (CL) falls be-tween 18.6 KW and 50 KW, thenew charges will be Rs. 3,000 andfor over 50 KW and 112 KW, Rs.10,000.

As of now, irrespective of con-nected load, the service connectioncharges are Rs. 500. In respect ofa single phase connection, theproposed rate is Rs. 900 againstthe existing rate of Rs. 250.

To cite another example, forchanging a meter on the consumer’srequest without any dispute overthe functioning of the instrument, the existing charges for all types oflow tension consumers (singlephase or three phase) are Rs. 50.

This will go up to Rs. 250 in theevent of approval of theTANGEDCO’s proposal. For athree-phase domestic consumer, the proposed rates will be Rs. 500(for CL up to 18.6 KW) and Rs.1,600 (for CL between 18.6 KWand 50 KW).

What will be of more relevanceto power consumers is the intro-duction of levies for those ser-vices, for which there are nocharges now.

At present, for replacement of

Power consumers may get another shockmeters damaged or burnt by acts ofconsumers, no service charges arelevied.

Hereafter, Rs. 250 will be lev-ied for a single phase domesticconsumer; Rs. 500 for a threephase consumer below 18.6 KWconnected load and Rs. 1,600 ifthe load is in the range from 18.6KW to 50 KW. Besides, the actualcost of meters will be recovered.

Likewise, for a host of func-tions such as meter reading andpreparation of power bills, a rateof Rs. 10 per month will becharged on a domestic consumer;Rs. 100 per month for a servicefalling under LT current trans-former (LTCT) category and Rs.250 for high tension services suchas an industrial establishment.Report courtesy The Hindu
