In 1941, Balachandar acted in ‘Aaraaichi Mani’, a moviebased onthe famous folk myth of the King Manuneethi Chola. It had the now-forgotten singing star of yesteryears P. B.Rangachari, M. R.Santhanalakshmi, young S. Varalakshmi(later singing star of SouthIndian Cinema) and characteractor and comedianM. R. Swaminathan. And, ofcourse, theinimitable pair N. S. Krishnan and his wife, T. A.Mathuram.

One of the major personalities of Indian Cinema, now sadlyneglected,Raja Sandow, directed this film. The music directionwas in the handsof Srinivasa Rao Shinde about whom little isknown today. Among thetechnicians, the editor was a youngman called S. Panjabi. His namewas actually S.Panchapakesan. In later years, along with his friendKrishnan,he would blossom forth as a top director of Indian Cinemaunderthe professional name ‘ Krishnan-Panju’. The film was shotinKandhan Studio, Coimbatore.

The studio promoted during the late 1930swas active for ashort while and then went out of existence.

Balachandar had only a few songs, which he sang in ragasSaraswathiand Hamir Kalyani. He also had a duet withVaralakshmi rendered in theragaTilakamodh. The film did notdo well in spite of Raja Sandow andis today totally forgotten.

A successful film of 1942 was ‘Naradar’. Made by thesadlyforgotten pioneer S. Soundararajan of Tamil Nadu Talk-ies, it had Ranjanand Kumari Rukmini in the lead roles.Balachandar was expected to playthe boy Naradar but, be-cause of the school schedules, his father chosenot to have hisson in the movie. A young girl from an educatedBrahmin familywas finally chosen to don the male role.

(Not many are aware that this writer, then a schoolboy inkhakishorts, was selected to play this role but his grandmotherthreatenedto jump into the family well! Thus, his dreams ofbecoming a childstar in Tamil Cinema sank into the familywell…..!)

After his schooling, Balachandar worked for sometime in theMusicDepartment of the Gemini Studios. The noted film musiccomposer whointroduced new trends in film music during1940s, S. Rajeswara Rao and theClassical Carnatic Music-trained M. D. Parthasarathy were in charge ofthe music wingwhere Balachandar learned orchestration, song composing, andother elements of film music. Besides, he learned to playmanyinstruments both Indian and Western, which helped himin large measurewhen he began to compose music for films.

During that period,Balachander, dressed in shorts and wear-ing khakipith hat and cyclingfrom his residence in Mylapore tothe Gemini Studios was a familiarsight to many residents ofthat area.

Balachandar scaled higher in 1948 with an offbeat Tamilsocial, ‘Ithu Nijama?’. During the period comprisinglargelymythologicals, folk tales, sentimental tear-jerking familydramaandboy meets girl and such kind of stories, this filmcame as whiff offresh air into the staid and stagy atmosphere.Balachandar not onlywrote the screen storybut also played adouble role of the twins, composed the music and also was thechief assistant director. The filmwas produced and directed byone of the finest cinematographers ofIndian Cinema, KrishnaGopal. Familiarly known K.G., he was noted forhis high qualityof work. In later years, he designed and built thefirst colorlaboratory in south India at the Gemini Studio for S. S.Vasan.S Soundararajan bankrolled the film, which was shot atthefamous Ranjith Studios, Bombay.

‘Ithu Nijama?’ was a faithful adaptation of the popularHollywoodmovie of 1945, ‘Wonder Man’. Produced by thefamous Hollywood moviemogul Samuel Goldwyn, the film hadthe well-known Hollywood star andcomedian Danny Kayeplaying the roles of the twins. Others includedwell-knownactresses of the period Vera Allen, Virginia Mayo, andthedelightful character actor S. Z. ‘ Cuddles’ Sakall. ‘WonderMan’ wasa big success all over and ran for many weeks atMadras drawing largecrowds when the film was released at theend of the Second World War(1939 - 1945).

Sir, At the T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association’s meeting heldon Nov. 10, a resident from Rameswaram Road, came up with a hostof civic issues plaguing residents on his street.

While he was assured of help and assistance, the resident wasasked to mobilize the residents of Rameswaram Road and present tothe Association a detailed plan of action. Even after the passage oftwo weeks, nothing has been heard from the resident.

An association is formed by a group of residents working for theirwelfare. It can function beneficially only if there is active participa-tion by its residents. It is all the more so for those Associations whoseresidents encounter problems. It is definitely a Herculean task tobring in residents to a common platform and make them understandthe advantages accruing to them by such a venture, but the effects ofsuch tenuous efforts will be equally rewarding in the long run. Onlyteam efforts will bear fruit. – V.S. Jayaraman, 31 Motilal Street,T. Nagar

NO HOLDS BARRED

Residents need to be proactive to solve civic problems

Newly paved road damaged due to lack of barricadingSir, Raman Street (New Ward 136), T. Nagar, which connects Dr.

Nair Road and Giriappa Road, was re-laid with a concrete surfacerecently.

However no proper care was taken during the road-laying work. The workers started with one half of the road, but no barricades

were placed to warn the motorists who drove over it even before thesurface had dried.

As a consequence, the surface is uneven and damaged with anumber of cracks, potholes and tyre marks.

Members of our Association met Rajendran, (Assistant Commis-sioner, Zone 10) and also spoke to the local MLA who has assured usthat the defects will be mended and due care taken during theconcreting of Madley Road and Anandan Street, which are in thepipeline. – Jayaraman, 50, Raman Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 9884163199.

COURTLY WISDOMBeautiful Arushi did not leave anyone to grieve for her since the

nearest and dearest were her parents who, the judicial wisdom hasdetermined, were her murderers. They escaped the rope by theenamel of their teeth which appears to be an advantage to thekiller couple when they go up in appeal where a twisty lawyer canargue that judgments in India cannot be legal if written inLatinfor, according toreports, the Shakesperean English wasredolent of Latin which goes above the head of everyone.

The dentist couple will get achance to atone for the sin by caringfor the teeth of their prison friends for the rest of their life.

Now let us tune our minds to Puducherry where Sankararaman, the murderee, through sessions judge Murugan, sleeps in peaceaftera 9-year drag making the case a champion snail crawl in which thepontiff and the junior pontiff were acquitted alongwith 21 othersregarding financial mismanagement detected by Sankraramanwho allegedly raised his voice which was stilled by theaccusedgodmen and their hangers-on.

The third and live and, to the million sex-starved democrats ofour beautiful land, the most interesting is the nameless journo girlat Tehelka seeking protection from handsome predators. It isbetter than watchingstupid cricket or worse, like funebrial Chessthat made Anand mad. As a verywise man like me said, “That’sLife”.
