6 Star, Thursday, August 23, 2018 HSH-EO1-S2 ST MARK’S: High achievers A-level results give teenagers chance to look to the future By Star reporters [email protected] STUDENTS across Harlow celeb- rated and looked to the future after getting their A level grades on Thursday, August 16. This is only the second year that most A-levels have been assessed solely on exams taken at the end of pupils’ second years, leading to the proportion of stu- dents gaining C grades and above falling across the country. But that didn’t stop students at Harlow College gaining a 99 per cent pass rate, with particularly strong results in chemistry, Eng- lish language, history, maths and sociology. The college also celebrated impressive results in Level 2 BTEC courses, where exams were introduced for the first time, including gaining a 100 per cent pass rate in applied science. Impressive As well as this results for the new technical certificates were equally impressive, with beauty students achieving distinctions, the highest possible grade, while the hospitality course saw the only distinction grade and the majority of merit grades across the country. Students secured places at some of the country’s top uni- versities including at University College London, Bristol, Birming- ham, King’s College London, Not- tingham, York and Manchester. Deputy principal Louise Turn- er said: “Once again our students have achieved tremendous res- ults, reflecting the hard work of the students and staff. “We are particularly delighted as we embark on the opening of our new college at Stansted Air- port this September. “Alongside excellent A Level results and progress directly to university many of our students are using apprenticeships as the route to combine their studies with employment. “Our strong science technology and mathematics (STEM) provi- sion enables many students to progress into employment and higher study in health, engineer- ing and science areas, supporting the growth of health and science employment opportunities in the area and the region.” Robert Halfon, MP for Harlow, said: “'I am so proud of Harlow College, one of the best colleges in England. “Yet again students have had outstanding A-level results with a 99 per cent pass rate and great results in key subjects in maths and English. “Harlow is becoming the skills capital of the East of England and ensuring that students can climb the education ladder of opportun- ity to achieve the very best. “This is all to do with the hard work, commitment and sheer non-stop effort of the governors, principal, staff, students and parents. A proud day for Harlow and congratulations to all.” This is the second year that A-level students at the college have been able to take BTEC subjects alongside tradi- tional A-levels. Head of sixth form Tracy Greenall said: “We have had a very successful year creating even greater personal pro- grammes for our learners, which has seen many combining A-level subjects with BTECs, such as health and social care and applied science, enhancing the overall experience and providing a wider range of subjects to be studied. “Following on from this suc- cess, we are exploring the possibilities of introducing new A-level subjects, including A-level philo- sophy, to further meet the needs and interests of lear ners.” Meanwhile students and staff at St Mark’s West Essex Catholic School celeb- rated excellent results, with many students becoming the first in their family to go to university. Pupils achieved a pass rate of 95 per cent, with 60 per cent achiev- ing A* to C grades and 99 per cent of students getting into a uni- versity or getting onto a course of their choice. Headteacher Elain Heaphy said: “We are delighted for the students, they should be proud of their achievements and we wish them all the best for their future endeavours. “Certainly, I would like to put on record my thanks to students, staff and parents for what was an exemplary team effort. “Our sixth form draws from all the other schools in Harlow and we would congratulate these schools for their work in success- fully getting these students through GCSE studies and giving them the grounding for A- level study. “We are sure that they will share in this success. We look forward to welcoming the new Year 12 cohort in September.” Staff at Sir Charles Kao UTC hope their improving results are a sign of things to come, with a brand new school due to open in September. The college became part of the Burnt Mills Academy Trust earli- er this year and saw a new head of school and leadership team brought in, among a range of other changes. From September, the school will relaunch as BMAT STEM Academy, focusing on preparing young people – from the age of 14 in Year 10 – for careers in the industries showing a skills short- age in Harlow. Studying Almost half of students secured A to C grades in the A-level exams, while 60 per cent of students studying BTECs in engineering and computing achieved distinc- tions and above. Last year just 18 per cent of Sir Charles Kao students secured A to C grades in their A-levels. Having worked with Year 13 for just a few months, head of school Lisa Tooley was pleased with the results students picked up and saw it as a positive sample of what is to come. She said: “We have worked hard with Year 13 in the very short time we have had with them and are pleased with the results they are collecting today which will enable them to go on to bright futures. “With our brand new school launching in September, with a new cohort of Year 10 students, we are even more excited to see what wonderful things we can achieve together.” Many students now leaving the school secured places on appren- ticeships, as well as gaining offers of places at universities.
