ISSUE 287 NOVEMBER 2012 Welcome back to those Palm Desert Country Club homeowners who have been away over the summer months! Those of us who remained enjoyed a great summer season until mid-July and then we had to endure the balance of the summer with high heat (of course), high humidity (too long), and last but not least, the odiferous Salton Sea (it’s getting worse)! Taking the summer away from one’s home here brings to mind some areas of concern which occur to some homes and yards when the gardener does not show up, or there is no gardener, or there is no one to monitor a home and yard through a long absence. Weeds grow, grass dies, and beautiful vegetation is brutally punished by the heat. Whenever a home- owner is going to be away for an extended period of time, please insure the home and property is cared for throughout the length of absence. Homeowners will be cited! While some of us were busy nurturing reseeded lawns in October, we took yet another proud look at homeowners who opted for desertscapes in their front yards. The PDCCA is very happy to showcase two more exceptional desertscapes ~ Tim and Tammy Salvador of Kansas Avenue recently transformed their front yard into a simplistic and strikingly aesthetic desertscape making ter- rific selections of rock, stones, and desert vegetation. Thank you Tim and Tammy…you are being awarded the PDCCA Green Thumb Award plaque! A home on Illinois displays a beautiful array of desert vegetation in the front yard and along side the property which faces a major street with lots of visibility. Thank you for a lovely view with a variety of desert vegetation. The PDCCA Green Thumb Award plaque will be presented to the homeowner! It is a repetitive process like many other life tasks to care for our homes and yards. Watering, mowing and edging are re- quired weekly, not twice a month or when a citation arrives from the HOA. If yard work is not a joyous task or has become a monetary encumbrance or physical challenge, then perhaps it is time once again to consider changing your yard. A desertscape, particularly a desertscape that can be approved by the Coachella Valley Water District who will then reward your efforts with a rebate, may be the answer. Call the CVWD at 760-391-9600 or visit their website at www.cvwd.org for complete information on their program. ENJOY A GREAT NEW SEASON with love and care for your home and yard ~

Homeowners will be cited! While some of us were busy nurturing reseeded lawns in October, we took yet another proud look at homeowners who opted for desertscapes in their front yards.

The PDCCA is very happy to showcase two more exceptional desertscapes ~

Tim and Tammy Salvador of Kansas Avenue recently transformed their front yard into a simplistic and strikingly aesthetic desertscape making ter-rific selections of rock, stones, and desert vegetation.

Watering, mowing and edging are re-quired weekly, not twice a month or when a citation arrives from the HOA. If yard work is not a joyous task or has become a monetary encumbrance or physical challenge, then perhaps it is time once again to consider changing your yard.A desertscape, particularly a desertscape that can be approved by the Coachella Valley Water District who will then reward your efforts with a rebate, may be the answer. FROM THE EDITOR’S LAPTOPWelcome home snowbirds. We are experiencing much cooler weather and lower humidity levels. It ap-pears to be a unanimous statement from full-time residents that this summer was one of our worst. Now it’s just a memory. And hopefully the weather forecast for an “El Nino” (translate rain) winter is not accurate. No disrespect to local weather broadcasters this summer, but they repeatedly said that the heat and humidity would only last for two or three more days—which in some cases turned into weeks.

Election Day, November 6th, is fast approaching. The Association board of directors sponsored a Meet the Palm Desert Candidates Night recently; the event was well attended by local residents, and City Council candidates had the opportunity to state their positions on City subjects and present their visions, if elected, for our City. We extend a thank you to each candidate who attended; we know how busy they are in the last month before an election.

Reservations are rolling in for our 8th annual Thanksgiving Social, Saturday, November 10, 2012, at PDCCA’s Alice Marble Hall, 77-800 Califor-nia Drive. Look for more information in this edition; reservations are required and can be placed by phone or email. Cost is $8.50 per person; be sure to bring your appetite, as this event is the best “almost” home cooking you will enjoy.

The PDCC golf course should be open by November 5th. Since we prepared this edition in mid-October, the PDCC club could not guarantee the opening date. As Dave Zickau, PDCC director of golf said, only Mother Nature can do that. In this edition we feature an article by Sean Haggerty, marketing director for the golf course. PDCC’s clubhouse is planning exciting events for the fall and winter, and they hope that the community will participate and enjoy their remodeled clubhouse and outdoor patio area with fire pits and water feature.

Luanne K. Fitton, our Community Improvement committee chair, shares some ideas in this edition regarding your Association property. We all want to be proud of our community. Please, owners or tenants, maintain your property to comply with the Association’s CC&R’s. We all benefit when you do.

Lastly, a very special thank you to Lu Clubb, who retired with her October 2012 column. Lu has been a loyal fan of our newsletter for many years, and has contributed countless columns, each with infor-mation about our community and its residents. Lu—a HUGE THANK YOU from the Association board of directors, Nancy, and me. We hope that you will periodically send us a column; there will always be room for “This n That” in our newsletter.

Thanks for supporting our advertisers, whose ad revenue helps to offset our newsletter cost. See you next month.

Have you had one of the following happen to you lately?: Phone mes-sage left on answering machine stating you have won a prize; have a package waiting for pickup; relative that needs help, etc.

This also applies to your email. Here, the scammers actually use a real Logo, such as UPS. I recently received this message, “Please contact us regarding your package, we are holding for you”. I thought this was real because I had actually just used UPS to ship something. How-ever, I put my mouse over the actual link and it was not UPS’ website, it leads you to a different web site. This particular scam was to obtain your personal information for possible Identity Theft. This is very popu-lar at this time. If you get one of these messages report the same to [email protected] Their legitimate web site is www.ups.com

If you have Caller ID you can see a number to call back. BUT DO NOT CALL UNTIL YOU VERIFY.

The latest is known as the Jamaica Scam

The message that was left on my phone stated, “Hi, this is John White, your package is waiting for you. “You look at the number and check it out. It is coming from Jamaica. Mr. White hung up before he com-pleted the message. If you call back they try to keep you on the phone and sometimes charge as much as $25.00 a minute. Jamaica is not the only scam, but their area code is listed as 809, 876 or 268.

The following other numbers may also be used:

Area code 242, 246 Bahamas; 268 Antigua; 345 Cayman Islands; 664 Montserrat; 758 St. Lucia; 787 Puerto Rico; 869 St. Kitts; 441 Bermuda

They may be changing the area codes at any time. Just check out the area code and you do not want to call that number.

Sometimes they also leave you a message that you won a prize. If it is too good to be true, then it probably is a scam.

Some scammers are desperate and call directly with a coy message, such as “Are you on you computer now?” I can fix your problems etc. Just hang up.

Stay safe and always check out a message or phone call before you give out any information. The real IRS and Social Security never con-tact you by email. Do not give out any personal information. If you are banking online, be careful, make sure the site you are dealing with is legitimate.

If you become a victim, please report it to law enforcement immediately.

We live in a place frequented by blimps! A relative years ago was ex-cited to the point of giggles because the Goodyear blimp flew over while she was visiting. It has become common place for us to see the various air-ships because of the tournaments and events here in the Coachella Valley, but to outsiders, it’s an event itself! Needless to say I became an instant star when I told them of my good luck some time ago – got to ride in and actually pilot for a few moments, the Good-year Blimp. Nothing special about this author, just in the right place at the right time. The Father provides. We also remember in the same group, one of the boys was making fun of a young lady who was a bit overweight, calling her “a blimp”. We shut him up telling him a blimp is actually a lighter than air vehicle, that floats through life. “Yah!”

The “blimp” was an invention of a German scientist/noble named Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin way back in 1874, according to internet sources. The Germans started using such ships including the LZ-129 Hindenburg, which was filled with hydrogen – highly flammable – and we know how well that worked for them! Yikes! There were two huge airships of the “Hindenburg Class” operated trans-oceanic, and sev-eral other smaller ones giving commercial service to Europeans before the disaster at Lakehurst New Jersey Naval Air Station on May 6th 1937. Thirty six people died – thousands stopped riding in the vehicles and the company went away not long after. It is said that the decorated

Blimps are cool!by Fred Stock

spire of the Empire State Building was originally designed as a docking station for dirigibles. I’d imagine the Lakehurst incident caused some rethinking of that image!

Military people still use lighter-than-air ships and have since WW1. Commercial folks now have numerous such craft in operation. Here in the valley we have seen a Goodyear blimp, a Vodka company, Fuji Film, insurance company, a soft drink company, and more. The pilot of the Goodyear blimp told us the dirigible is the only form of aircraft in which no seat belt is required, because they move so gently they never place the passengers in jeopardy. You steer with your feet, control the up and down angle with a huge wheel like that used to steer ocean ships. This one is alongside the pilot, and is spun forward or back like the rim of a wheel chair. What fun!

It’s been rumored our drug enforcement people use small lighter than air craft for surveillance, and that NASA scrapped a plan to use such vehicles on space exploration jobs because there is no dependable atmosphere on those celestial bodies we have been able to work. It would be so cool to float over the Martian rover and operate it like a Wii or Nintendo. But Nnnnoooooohh! Anyway, here on our home planet, there are reportedly 43 different commercially operated blimps, including three from Goodyear (not Goodrich – we’re the other guys) which is down I believe from five at one time. They hover over baseball parks, golf tournaments, tennis matches, and become TV’s eye in the sky. Just part of our home here in the desert. You can’t say that in the corn belt, eh?

Re-open and ready to celebrate 50 years in the community, The Cac-tus Club at the Palm Desert Country Club invites everyone to visit us for Food, Fun, and Golf. As you may have noticed the greens are mowed and green again, golf carts are crossing the streets, and the occasional golf ball may be bouncing across your roof. Thanks to new owners, PD Golf Operations, acquiring the property in September 2011, the two courses and the 13,000-square-foot clubhouse opened in January of 2012, Palm Desert Country Club is slowly, but surely, returning to the glory of the good old days. Don’t let the Country Club moniker fool you; even though we treat all of our guests like members of a private country club, we are completely open to the public, and are looking forward to a very exciting winter full of incredible golf, a “new and improved” Clubhouse, and fun and exciting events.

The 170-acre Palm Desert Country Club, a 27-hole course, was origi-

nally designed by Billy Bell Jr. in 1962 and has been completely redesigned by Architect Cary Bickler, who reno-vated both the 18 hole and 9 hole Ex-ecutive course, including adding new water hazards. With the acquisition of a dream team of maintenance men and equipment, more John Deere Tractors than I’ve seen since

traveling through Kansas, it will be a great golf season. David Zickau our Director of Golf, brings a wealth of knowledge and an abundance of enthusiasm to the Palm Desert Country Club. Contact Dave for Memberships, Tee Times, Tournaments or any of your golfing needs. Look forward to the 18 hole course re-opening after over seeding the first part of November. The 9 hole executive course will close for over seeding after the 18 hole course reopens, to insure uninterrupted golf throughout the year. Want to teach the kids golf, without the expense of green fees? Be sure to bring them out on Sundays for free play (16 and under) with a paying adult, don’t worry about feeding the kids the Cactus Club will be offering inexpensive lunch specials for them too.

Aptly named The Cactus Club, our Clubhouse offers casual dining and a full bar. Reggie Cox, our new Food & Beverage Manager, is no stranger to the Coachella Valley. He recently served as Food and Bev-erage Manager then ultimately as General Manager at Indian Palms Country Club. Reggie also has a diversified background with Velvet Turtle Restaurants and American Golf. Along with Jay our Chef, a veteran of Hotel del Coronado and the D’Anza Country Club have cre-ated a tasty, and reasonably priced, array of fine American Cuisine. Be sure to try the Irish Nachos for a tasty treat. Louise, of Louise M. Neyer Interiors, decorated the Clubhouse creating an elegant, welcoming, “homey” feel to the interior. Large windows offer impressive views of the putting and chipping greens and the surrounding mountains. The addition of a large patio, complete with a rock wall fountain, two fire pits

and misters, create a wonderful place to enjoy the beauty of the San Jacinto Mountain range by day, sunsets, and stars by night.

Live Entertainment abounds with live music on the patio every Fri-day and Saturday nights from 7-10pm through October, and from 6-10pm beginning in No-vember. Hosting bands playing a wide variety of music; acts have included regular Cal David, Melt-down, The Arrangements, Reac-

tion, The Muddy Sparks Trio, and many more. Monday Night Football has proven to be a great place to watch the game with 6 large Flat Screen TV’s and fun games and prizes. Looking for a place to hold your Anniversary or Birthday Party? You will find the Cactus Club will-ing and able to satisfy all your needs. Watch for special events this winter, such as our Holiday Festival in December and Family Sunday Fundays to be coming soon.
